For Captain America:
July 1 2009

For Thor:
May 2009
That's right, Thor comes out first since Cap must be near 4th of July. Comments?

Neither. Those would be horrible dates considering they haven't even entered into production yet.

Both films are more or less a go because they're the next big Marvel characters on the lineup. This is just a projection and the dates are 2 years off. For reference, Hulk went into production less than a year than the movie date.

Then why didn't you put the appropriate year?

I like the July release date for C.A.... Thor should be May as well... early May or early June... you have to keep it away from Avatar... the key is when WB will put out their JLA or MOS.... if its late July then C.A will be fine... might not be the case if MOS/JLA comes out in late June... that could hurt numbers big time.

I too feel that a 4th of July date is great for Cap. May would also work for Thor, as long as there is enough room away from Avatar. They could push Thor into the first weekend in June. Iron Man and the Hulk are barely over a month apart.
That said, when do you think we will hear about announcements for these two projects. We all know Cap is supposed to be a 2009 release with one other film, which looks to be Thor. My biggest dissapointment at Comic-Con was there being no announcement for Cap. Both Iron Man and Hulk made director announcements a year ago at the con. I was hoping for the same thing with Cap and Thor or even Nick Fury.

2009 is the appropriate year, if nothing bad happens to Marvel's plan. Cap is the next property inline after Hulk, and Marvel is not gonna waste a year. Thor is another big movie candidate.

What's Avatar? I so hope Thor can match Avatar, knowing it's not a recognizable property.

We'll hear Thor and Cap directors soon.

Avatar is James Cameron's big sci-fi epic and return to the film industry since Titanic (or Dark Angel if you count TV).

I don't see any problem them releasing them in the same summer, just keep up 6-8 weeks apart...

Exactly; most films do 75% of their box office in the first two weeks anyway.

If Matt Vaughn agree to direct Thor, it can go into production early next year. May need the snow...

In the case of Thor, if Matthew Vaughn were to sign on to direct before the end of the year, I think it probably could make a 2009 release. Probably not the summer though. Maybe around the Holidays. Given the fantasy undertones a Holiday release makes sense for Thor, IMO.

I don't think Captain America will make a 2009 release date, but regardless of the year, it would have to be released on the 4th of July weekend.

There's absolutely no reason to think Captain America won't make a 2009 release. As long as they start filming around June of next year they'll be fine. That and Marvel studios only does TWO films a year, period. It's not like they have hundreds of other films to focus on that will end up causing them to neglect Captain America. Iron Man/Hulk in 2008, Thor/Captain America in 2009.

I think Marvel is gonna be dishing out five movies in 2009.... don't give me the three movie a year limit... there are millions of marvel properties that are well into pre production... if that was the case we'd have Marvel movies lasting is from now till the 22nd century...we may be getting four marvel movies in 2008 if Punisher 2 is out by then... but 2009 could be the biggest year yet:

Namor the Submariner April 2009
Thor May 2009
Silver Surfer June 2009
Captain America July 2009
Magneto December 2009

Can you say loaded???

Namor - Probably not coming out by then

Thor - Yes

Silver Surfer - Uh... That's owned by fox dude, nothing to do with Marvel Studios

Captain America - Yes

Magneto - Again, a Fox film, not Marvel Studios.

I am aware of all that... but those characters are still Marvel properties... I wasn't talking about Marvel studios... and they have talked about Namor for a while now... it has a director and a possible candidate for the lead so I don't see how that date is too early

Namor is not really a priority. Thor and Captain America are the priorities as they're the ones that Marvel discuss about in length if there's an exposition on future Marvel films. Writers for both films were assigned. Right now is at the stage of finding the directors. Thor seems to have the faster lane if Matt Vaughn are asked to direct it. Even Ant Man is not being talked heavily anymore. Going for a huge left and right fist for 2009, Cap and Thor is the right choice.

As for Silver Surfer and Magneto these are handled by external studios. Marvel needs only to take care off 2 of their characters per year. Do you know that 2008 has 3 big Marvel character movies, and 1 of them is Wolverine? A huge one but that's Fox issue.

Problem is that they still have only a script and no director or cast. I honestly cannot see how a Captain America film could be ready by 2009. You also have to take into account the amount of pre-production that will be needed as well. I don't see it seeing the light of day any earlier than 2010.

My response to that would be: How do you know there isn't a director? Or that they are at least negotiating with one as we speak, and haven't announced anything? As for cast, it's still too early. We didn't know about Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton until 5-6 months before the film started shooting. If we apply that same model to Captain America, we should get the first casting news in December or January.

You changed it. It used to say 2008, which is why I questioned it.

Heh, just a nitpick but it's actually 4:

Iron Man
Hulk
Wolverine
Punisher

2008 is gonna be PACKED.

Captain America should be on the first weekend in July (around July 4th). Thor would be good for any time early on in summer/late spring.

Namor is Universal so that is not a Marvel studio priority... I was merely pointing out all the movies coming out in a couple of years that are associated with Marvel characters... not just Marvel studio movies... Namor will get done sooner than later... although I really have little interest in that or the Fox spinoffs outside Wolverine and maybe Magneto

My experience is that director are usually hired a two full years before the film is released. It is possible that maybe Marvel is in negotiations with director, but I doubt it since there hasn't even been any rumors in that regard. Besides, I would rather wait and see a quality Captain America movie than a rushed film that sucks.
