Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Wow. This was remarkably better than the first one. Then again I used to play sonic 1-3 like crazy when I was a kid, so I think the fact this entry embraced the video game (while also being competently made) made me the exact audience they were trying to reach. It's really sappy and silly in parts but the earnestness & charm are there which really balances what would ordinarily be a cringey affair.

Given that I just saw Everything Everywhere All at Once last night, kinda think Sonic 2 had an uphill battle with me but I came away really liking it.

I have a feeling if Rouge ends up in the Knuckles show, she ends up with a re-design lol. But who knows. I loved Team Chaotix in "Sonic Heroes" always thought Espio was cool. Vector... who voices him? Tikal would be sweet, especially if they can tease Chaos. The Hooligans, I'm not sure I remember them.

Rouge has plenty of designs they could work with. My favorite is Agent Rouge from the SPeed Battle Mobile Game

The Hooligans originated in a variety of games. Fang the Sniper aka Nack the Weasel debuted in Sonic Triple Trouble for the Game Gear, while Bean and Bark debuted in Sonic the Fighters. They came together as a team when Ian Flynn was writing in Archie and SEGA just kinda ran with them. They appeared in Sonic Mania as the "bosses" of Mirage Saloon Zone (they were illusions created by Heavy Magician)

I wonder how Amy Rose can be introduced into the film series. She's not my favourite Sonic character but it would be odd not to have her in the films.

If they ever plan on bringing her in, she's 100% getting redesigned and the Lola Bunny fiasco will repeat all over again. :funny:

I never said it bombed, I said it underperformed which it did.

You said it didn't perform well. I mean, if you want to get technical, the first Tomb Raider movie in 2001 and 1995 Mortal Kombat also performed well at the box office. So we can make an argument that Mortal Kombat way back in 1995 really broke the curse.

Introduce Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters.

I'm glad to see these Sonic films be so successful and I'm sure Sonic 3 will be even bigger given the insanely positive reactions I have seen to that mid credits' scene and the overall positive reception to this movie.

I definitely think this is going to be a very profitable franchise for Paramount going forward as long they are able to maintain the same, consistent level of quality not to mention adding all the fan favorite characters.

Boy, it already feels like they have come a long way since those awful Transformers sequels and the disaster that was Snake Eyes from last year which I'm sure they want to forget lol.

Still doesn't change the fact that it underperformed below the studios expectations.

OK, but if that's the metric we're going by, then it wasn't Sonic that broke the curse. Sorry.
Two successful movies during a pandemic seems like it has broken the "curse" but hey that's just me. Also I know the first came out just prior to the pandemic but it's safe to say that these movies are the most loved video game movies of all time.

Havent seen this yet (gonna try to this week) but SO happy to see this do well and show that theres hope for video game movies! The first movie was a pleasantly charming surprise, you can tell the filmmakers put a lot of effort and heart into these movies and wanna please the fans.

See, Hollywood, all you gotta do is hire filmmakers who give a damn about the actual GAME theyre adapting to film. Is that so hard?!

Wish us MK fsns can get a creative team that is not embarrassed by working on a video game movie the $$ is there also love that a goofy concept like this makes $$ to also stick it up these high brow executives think there ideas are better than the creators. (To the executive who suggested Cole for MK )

This a win for all of us

Except Detective Pikachu made more money and sold more tickets than the first one.

Well, how can Penders claim ownership over any of that? It's technically not his intellectual property. Sonic, Knuckles, Chaos Emeralds are owned by SEGA.

Welp, my kids have a new favorite movie ever.

Listen, it's one of those flicks where it feels like they left everything in. There wasn't any scene I outright hated... In fact, I enjoyed almost all of them to some degree, but there were definitely a lot of scenes that went on longer than they should. Probably at least a dozen you could have shaved a half minute to minute out of. And yet I still had a big smile on my face for about 2 hours. I liked the focus and simple charm of the first movie, but this one still had a lot of charm (in some ways even more because the character dynamics between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are so dang good) and, man, did they up the action, scale, and Sonic lore.

So this is what it's like for a Marvel fan when they see one of the good MCU movies.

See, this makes no sense when you then write:

That's a weird barometer. There have bene successful video game movies in terms of finacials. The original Mortal Kombat, the original Tomb Raider and reboot, the Resident Evil series, Warcraft, Detective Pikachu, etc.

If you are talking about reviews, neither Sonic movie has reviewed "well". They've reviewed okay.

If this is an argument about what audience enjoys, yes Sonic has a pair of kids movies, that kids enjoy. But you have no basis to make the absolute statements you've made.

Overall, you made three different arguments, none of which stood up.

This movie only exist because people told the original concept for Sonic to F'off. It's crazy when you think where we were probably going to originally end up.

It's pretty simple. The Sonic movies are the most widely popular videogame adaptations we've seen yet, as well as the most fondly received by fans of the existing IP.

They are also some of the biggest and best family films outside of the Disney empire.

Dude, I watched a few videos about this Ken Penders guy, he's been suing Sega /Archie Comics for a decade now. He's caused so many problems for their comic canon. They can't even use Scourge the Hedgehog anymore. This guy said they have stolen his ideas, but they're not even THAT similar. He was going on a rant about they used Knuckles dad, who he created. But they never mention his name or anything in the film.

The more I've learned about this guy, the less I respect.
