Sonic the Hedgehog 2

I never owned a Sega Genesis so I played Sonic once in a while. I did own a Dreamcast and the Sonic Adventure series is my favorite so seeing that it looks like they're going in that direction makes me SO happy.

Also the movie was fun, good for kids and parents that played the games. Can't believe this might be the most successful and well done video game adaptation.

Sure, but kids ate up Alvin and the Chipmunks as well. I'm simply talking about striving for greatness with these films and not playing to lowest common denominator and low hanging fruit for easy cheap laughs.

I hear you but even the silly dance scene served to help develop the bond and trust between Sonic and Tails.

They could have shaved a few minutes out of the wedding hijinks, for sure. There were some really fun moments (avalanche wedding crash, "RUN, RANDALL") but at a certain point the sister and Randall were the only ones in a scene and that should have been cut or shortened down to a blip. Outside of that, I think most of the sillier tangents in the movie (like the Wade stuff) still served a purpose for the story, and the story as a whole worked really well.

It's okay for a kids movie to have some lowest common denominator stuff as long as it is mixing it in with other quality stuff, and that is something I feel like both Sonic movies have done well. There is a really solid balance in these movies between silly stuff, clever stuff, general audience enjoyment, fan enjoyment, action, pathos, humor, themes, entertainment, tropes but also really creative touches, etc.

How did the wedding scene do that?

That's what I said, the wedding stuff needed trimmed down. There were still parts of it necessary for the plot and for the Sonic relationship with his "parents."

And like I said, a lot of the adults in my screening seemed to enjoy most of the stuff in Hawaii. Just because it's not for you doesn't mean it's not for someone.

Sure, but now that the films are this point, I'd like to see them elevated and knockoff the stupid stuff. You can have humor without it being so low level.

Just for example, Knuckles reacting to the text messages and not understanding Earth culture was funny and made sense. It naturally comes out of the characters. Knuckles trying to destroy the holograms, also funny and also show that Knuckles is a physical threat.

“I’m coming for you Sonic…”

It was always Crash > Sonic > Mario for me growing up. That said, I didn't grow up with an N64, and my first console was the original Playstation, and had a Game Gear and only had Sonic games on it haha.

I'm highly doubtful Illumination Mario will even be anywhere close the level of quality or enjoyability as Sonic 2.

Oh, I agree with you that some of the humor works better than other parts... but humor is really subjective.

I think most of the humor in the movie is character based, just some of it comes maybe a little too much from the secondary characters that most of us don't care as much about. I do think that the film could have used a critical editing eye in terms of maintaining the narrative focus and momentum.

Saw this last night, easy 8/10 for me.

Loads of fun + lots of game references + Jim Carrey killed it as Robotnik. And O'Shaughnessey and Elba did great as Tails and Knuckles respectively.

As been's said, the only thing that really detracted from it were the wedding scenes.

Bring on Sonic 3!

On a side note, I always preferred the Sonic games over Mario as a kid. Mostly because I sucked at the Mario games and constantly either ran into enemies or missed jumps to fall off the screen. :o I vastly preferred how the Sonic games didn't punish you as much for that and the levels were designed to reward you for going fast. So if the Mario movie does worse, I might actually be happy. :p (and I'm a huge Nintendo fan btw - Zelda and Metroid fan for life!)

Looks like Sonic may retain the top spot this weekend according to early box office projections. Let’s see if their right.

Sonic in its second weekend beating out Fantastic Beasts in its first weekend would just be the final nail in the coffin for that series.

It's so weird that WB and Sony are following up their biggest hits (The Batman) (Spider-man NWH) with lower tier franchises (Fantastic Beasts) (Morbius)

I really do wonder how they will mix in Amy and other SA characters?

True. As much as im rooting for Sonic, I still think FB might edge him out. But Sonic should EASILY make it past $100 mil this weekend. According to Deadline going into today its sitting at $89.6 Million. Projections are in the $33-$39 Million for this weekend. Which would bring it up to the $120s.

I think a big thing is if Sonic is able to pass Uncharted. Uncharted is sitting at $143.6 mill domestically.

Yeah but that sort of stuff is more difficult for casual movie-going parents to engage with and enjoy, character dynamics between furry aliens and a mad scientist are too out there for them, too fantastical. Whereas "an angry bride tries to run over the groom in a golf cart after he tricks her and ruins her wedding" is something casual moms and dads can wrap their heads around more easily.

Anyway, I'm just glad these Sonic movies aren't sacrificing the character dynamics and fanservice stuff for the sake of the broad demographic stuff, they've managed a decent balance. After years and years of Michael Bay Transformers movies showing me how bad it can really get, these Sonic movies are a pleasant surprise.

This is a self-defeating prophecy. This is why these movies are stuck in the 60 percent range on Rotten Tomatoes when people were hoping Sonic 2 would go over 70%.

It seems to me audiences for the vast majority like these furry aliens and mad scientist and find them believable.

And every review I read, the complaints are the same. The wedding subplot was dumb and went on too long.

Maybe some casual moms and dads enjoyed that. But if that wasn't there, would they have hated the movie and not had a good time?

Do Transformers movies need Sam's mom eating pot brownies and tackling college kids because teenage boys think it's funny?

To me it's not balanced enough and that's why these aren't GREAT movies.
