'Spider-Man' Spinoff 'Venom' Revived at Sony (Exclusive)

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, stewards of the 'Spider-Man' properties, are producing and overseeing the new film.

Now that Sony has set Spider-Man on its rebooted path, the studio is setting its sights on other Spider-Man franchises. Case in point: Venom.
Sony has tapped Dante Harper to pen a script for Venom, something that is being envisioned as a franchise apart from and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the works with actor Tom Holland.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, stewards of the Spider-Man properties, are producing and overseeing the project.

Venom is one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988, created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. The character is an alien symbiote that need a human host to survive. In return, the alien empowers its victim with incredible powers.

For the longest time, Venom was a villain but then morphed into an anti-hero and even (almost) good guy. In his current incarnation, Venom is paired with Flash Thompson, a Peter Parker bully-turned-close friend and now a government agent.

It is unclear which Venom incarnation is being used for the new project.

The character made its screen appearance in Spider-Man 3 and was played by Topher Grace. A spin-off has been in development in several incarnations, with Gary Ross and Josh Trank among the director coming and going, and writers such as Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool) and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci penning versions.

This Venom is meant to not only stand on its own but to also launch its own franchise.

Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing Venom for Sony’s Columbia label.

Harper is an up-and-coming scribe who did rewrite work on Edge of Tomorrow, the time travel sci-fi movie that starred Tom Cruise. He also co-wrote Sleepless Night, the crime thriller that stars Jamie Foxx and Dermot Mulroney.

Venom with Tom Hardy onboard is really the only Sony Spider-man project I'd like to see do well and be both connected to Tom Holland's Spider-man and the MCU. The other ideas bandied about just seem like planned car crashes. This is the only one with redeemable aspects IMO (at least outside of the animated film).

Carnage was the obvious choice for a Venom movie if there was no Spidey.

Excited to see Carnage in live-action, but still don't have much hope for the movie itself.

To clarify, this is rated R, right?

'Cause that's the only way you could give Carnage justice. Cautiously optimistic to see him on the big screen.

I wish Sony could have just handled all these villains as well as Ock by the traditional route.

It always seems like it's a fastest to the finish line with some of these studios. Most of them are already out of breath.

Who do you guys want to see as Carnage? I think he is best choice for villain, so this is a good move

Jackie Earle Haley is Cletus Kassidy, duh. He looks just like him.

Yep. Thank God to that, anyway.

From a Disney perspective? All Sony movies (including Spider-Man) benefit Sony more than Disney. From Disney's perspective, Spider-Man is worthwhile because he can promote Disney films. But a Venom vs. Spider-Man movie would still be a Sony film.

With respect Mike Murdock, you are wrong that the Sony movies only benefit Sony. They benefit Marvel/Disney from merchandise perspective. Remember, Marvel/Disney still control all Spider-Man merchandising rights. All that money goes to them, and not a red cent goes to Sony. So even if a Venom movie does well in terms of merchandise, that merch money goes to Disney.

Also, Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige are still producers on Spider-Man Homecoming. Why not have them involved with Venom? Really, why not? Even if Sony controls the films, those are still Marvel's characters at the end of the day. Here is my point, even if it's Sony's film, if it's bad, it could still damage the character's brand.

I'm excited to see Venom and Carnage but this is not how it should be done. They should appear in a movie with Spider-Man first. The symbiote should be on Spidey first. Yes they already did that in Spider-Man 3 but it feels wrong to do it in other way.

Walton Goggins.

That's the best suggestion I've seen so far. I don't see Michael C. Hall at all, for example. Sure, he played a serial killer, but he doesn't really have the trailer trash aspect of the character.

Jackie Earl Hayley or an unknown. This is a perfect chance to give an already known actor a popularity boost, or a be a star-making role for an up and comer.

Question for you guys to get discussion going:

How do you want Eddie and the symbiote to interact? In the old school way where he'd one-sidedly ask questions and answer? Or would you like the modern take where it telepathically communicates with him and the audience would be privy to that?

I think they could have some interesting visuals to show it communicating with Eddie since they're pushing a horror aspect.

I can see a scene when he's doubting himself, wondering what to do. The camera closes in on him. Eddie shuts his eyes, and upon opening them, we're now in a rundown and grayscale apartment. Only Eddie is in colour. Across from him in the shadows seated crossed legged in a chair, is a blacked out figure, but the only visible thing is a slightly glowing pair of eyes and the spider symbol.

A distorted voice, a mix of his own and to put a creepy spin on it, Anne's, begins speaking to Brock, telling him his work NEEDS to continue.

For such an affect, I'd borrow visually from the modern books and Last Temptation of Eddie Brock. Not so much making the symbiote evil, but more just something that talks to him and visually represented as Eddie talking to the suit:

I think this movie is bad idea overall, but I can't help but be excited by seeing
Hardy as Venom and now Carnage confirmed as the villain. Damn they are certainly making me intrigued with every bit of news.

Eh, Carnage would be kind of cheap. "Venom vs More Evil Venom"? No.

If you absolutely have to do a solo Venom movie, the villain you need? The Jury. A gathering of not-entirely-heroic individuals, hunting down Venom to bring him to ( ethically questionable ) justice for the many crimes he totally has done. They can simultaneously force him to confront his manifold horrible deeds, while also providing a dark mirror that shows that an "extreme justice!" demeanor on his part can very easily *also* be a lie. In the end, he either grapples with his crimes in truth, and takes step towards real responsibility, starting with turning himself in to the real authorities. Or he very clearly refuses to accept responsibility, and affirms in the eyes of the audience ( if not quite in his own twisted eyes ) that he is a monster and will remain such.

There really is no way to make Venom a heroic character considering how many people he kills in general. I feel the same way about other comic characters that do the same thing even though their anti-hero status makes them cooler to some fanboys.
