SONY Wants To Kill Captain America and The Avengers

Spiderman in mid-June is fine... also Avengers is so big that it doesn't need to be July fourth... let Will Smith or whoever else take that weekend. TDK did just fine in mid July as did POTC: DMC and other big films. There will be good spacing if that's the case. But I still don't like all those films in the same year. I like the two big Marvel films a year/summer but three is pushing it. Plus Sony likes that May release. I am sure Marvel could convince them to move to June so we'll see how it plays out... but I am still banking on Avengers/SM4 moving to 2012. If Marvel needs two films for 2011 make Ant-Man or TIH2. But over saturation is the biggest concern at this point... I mean with Thors... Punisher sequels... Marvel is really stretching this out beyond anyone's imagination... it's going to get quite old and stale pretty fast... and thank Sony/Fox for starting that with their craptacular third installments to their A-list property.

Spidey should definatey come in June 2011. I mean Spidey 4 isn't going to be as big as Spidey 3, unless it gets the same spectacular reviews that #2 did.

Well from the looks of it Sony is saying screw you Marvel and is going to put Spidey in may and since Spidey is a 300+ movie on its own its safe to say any movie going against it will have a horrible time. Not to mention the last Harry Potter movie is also scheduled for that month another movie that should soar past 200 mil & come on Cap doesnt have a script actor or anything other than Marvel wanting it to come out that year. I know there's still 2 years to go but casting alone so its a wait and see if this movie doesnt get delayed hell IM2 might come out the same year as Cap acourding to its director.

I doubt Spidey 4 is an EASY 300+ after a dissapointing Spidey 3. Word of mouth could save it big time and its not impossible for it to do well. But considering Spidey 3s poor reception and an obvious cast and crew change since no one sounds excited to return it wont be the easy sell that Spidey2 and 3 were

Cereal:

How did Spider-man 3 perform badly? It broke a worldwide release record with $117 million, plus an IMAX record and its total profit was $890,871,626.

At the time it came in third in worldwide sales behind Pirates 3.

I'm surprised Sony doesn't have Spider-man 4 in pre-production right now with that success.

Personally, I think marvel should readjust their plans anyway. The Incredible Hulk was not a BAD movie, and should have done better. I believe it would have if it had been delayed a bit. Instead of putting The Avengers: Origin chapters 1 and 2 out right after each other and then not releasing part 3 for 2 years, it would have been nice to get some better spacing from it all. With their licensed movies still putting out films its getting kind of crowded. I would be all for Iron Man 2 in summer of 2010, Thor as a Zodmas release that year, then Captain America for July 4th 2011 and Avengers a year later.

Welcome to the world of economic competition. Where companies aren't "polite" to one and other and do what's best for their bottom line. Next thing you know, WB might put BB3 up against a Marvel movie, Disney might develop POTC4, a Will Smith movie will come out on the 4th of July, Pixar will schedule their next big picture, etc.

And, really, scheduling 3 years in advance for movies that haven't even made it into preproduction is silly.

I think Cap could potential outgross SM4 domestically. No one is going to convince me there is a high demand for more Spidey movies outside the fan base... and the fan base is big I get that. But I do not think 300 million is a lock... if the film is bad it will be lucky to do much more than X-3 numbers... big opening weekend with no legs. I think Cap has more potential... plus Marvel said they want to introduce new characters.

But is Cap going to have a wide appeal outside the US?

I mean, I'm there opening day at 12:01 am (and I'm Canadian) but are other nations going to flock to this movie? I guess you'd have to see how other American based war movies have traditionally done in foreign markets.

I can't wait for this movie and would pick it over Spiderman in a heartbeat...but would others? I don't know.

Didnt say performance. I said reception. I have seen little praise for the movie.

Yeah, Spidey 3 sucked. I had high expectations and nothing lived up to the trailer. For a while I thought the movie was making fun of itself.

I would imagine Spidey 4 out doing Captain America but I doubt the release dates will be so close when it comes down to it. Even if the buzz shows so right now. I am more excited for Cap than anything.

Probably depends on who is in Cap, and Whether Tobey comes back as Spidey too.

I hope this works out for the best. (Read: Cap keeps its release date and Sony lives with it.)

I think if they go in a new direction with Spidey then it will do well? Do you think they should bring Tobey back?

Tobey will be gone IMO... but I have a question... I mean am I the only person who thinks it's too crowded for Cap/Spidey/Avengers in the same year?

I think it might be problematic to release Avengers as a sequel to Cap in the same summer. Not saying it definitely would, but it could be you know too much too fast.

But I dunno.

In 2003, X-men 2 did really well and Hulk disappointed.

In 2007, Spider-man 3 did pretty good but Fantastic Four 2 really disappointed.

In 2008, Iron Man did great, but Hulk only did ok-ish.

Not every movie can make in the area of $300 million.

As much as I love Spider-man I'd prefer if that would move to another date. He's had three movies already. It's Cap's turn to shine now.

Again, nothing about MAY 2011 says they'll put Spidey on the same date as Captain America.

Chill out.

Even if SM4 is last week of May, there is not enough separation.

Both movie at least need 4 weeks span between each other. So one can't be in the same one as another.

Even if I "root" for Captain America in the May schedule, I certainly question Marvel's ability to produce Cap in timely schedule. If Marvel can't, why not move it to July and Avengers get kicked to next year? I'm not saying that Sony has a more easier task; I don't think some of the cast is returning and because of the disappointment that is SM3 they might want to take some time in the script department.

I'm sure the Cap script will be boosted by the addition of Ed Brubaker or Mark Waid, so Marvel has the story part under control.

3 weeks is plenty of seperation time; look at Iron Man and Indiana Jones. The #2 and 3 highest grossing films of 2008, released three weeks apart.

Besides, Spider-Man won't meet the deadline; there are SOOO many questions that have to be answered before they get this movie on the road.

Nolan's Batman 3 may also come out in 2011...is there really going to be room that summer for FOUR tentpole superhero movies, not to mention any other big movies that some other studios may put out?

Eventually, someone's going to have to move over to the Christmas season....Summer is getting too cluttered.

I don't think Avengers need to fear Batman 3. Heath Ledger isn't there anymore.

Basically is big Marvel vs DC throwdown if WB tries to put in Batman 3, and I will join the Marvel cause.

But your basically destroying legs Cap would have... people would move on to the next superhero movie. I understand summer movies are changing and it's basically a weekend to weekend basis but still... you want to have that good month in between. Sony should move to June... as long as Marvel stays put with the dates for Cap/Avengers.
