Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 1

I'm very iffy on it. It seems too much like Lois Lane. Ultimate Spider-Man did that too, and she didn't really feel like MJ at all. Just an OC with MJ's name and appearance.

MJ has had various iterations where she's filled different roles and imo I like the fact that she's actually being featured in a prominent way as an important character in something spider-man related. Versus how she's been treated lately in the comics and movies...nothing more than a weird off-putting mention in a forced cringey way at the end of Homecoming. So, while this game version is yet to be realized, I'll take the proactive girlfriend type versus the stay at home and worry version she's often unfairly depicted. That's just me though.

Hello MJ, I missed seeing you as Mrs. Spider-Man. I hop they will get married in this world.

It still feels like a sequel to the Beenox movie tie-ins, I don't mind this, the game looks nice enough, and the new features look nice enough. Plus, it mostly denounced opening clunky moves.

About the way faces are drawn, I don't think Insomniac Games has been strong in that department, at least MJ's face here looks significantly nice than her counterpart from Edge of Time did.

Thanks for the the info on Ultimate MJ. I never bothered watching the show so didn't know that's where they went with her. Either way, still dig it. Like UltimateWebhead said, there's been different takes on MJ and it's nice to see her being treated well and prominently in this so far so I'll take it hah.

Don't think they quite captured him. But whatever, its not important.

Game looks great overall.
I won't think about it in the game, but looking at that Instagram post I think he looks significantly different.

On second thought, Spider-Man in those games is a reckless *****e, I don't like his characterization in those games, the cross-species epidemic is more his fault than it is Oscrop's. And he stole tech stolen from Oscorp to make his suits.
He also invaded people's privacy in tracing his uncle's killer.

I still like the gameplay though.

I think that was her ambition in the USM comics that she chose to enter the school paper, the show took that one step further.

Put me in the "not a fan of MJ being a reporter" camp.

That schtick is used way too often for comic book love interests. MJ was interesting enough as she was, as seen by 50 some odd years of history before One More Day. This change is just unnecessary.

Being a reporter for the Bugle ties her to both Peter and Spider-Man and more to the point in an organic way that allows her to be involved in the plot of the game. It would explain how she's on the scene of an emergency at the same time as Spider-Man, most likely working on a story.

The problem you run into with trying to fit MJ's extremely wonderful 50 year development into a game or movie is that you're not really able to do it. MJ evolved in an unplanned way over the course of her comic history that took her from the beautiful party girl to the deep compassionate strong character we know and love today. With a game you're talking about a snap shot in time and in this game we're looking at MJ post her organic development as in she's closer to her full evolution. That's where tv has its advantages like with TSSM--we got classic MJ. The party girl with something extra and I'm sure had the show continued we'd see that continued development of her character.

That said, the reporter part doesn't bother me. I'm more satisfied and intrigued that we're actually getting MJ as a love interest with more to offer to the story. She's a true element in Peter's life, she's truly there for him and him for her. They're in this together and that's how it should be.

I am not a fan of making MJ a reporter. Why not make Betty Brant (one of Peter's original love interests that predated MJ) a reporter for the Bugle (who started out as an intern and worked her way up)? It fits better because Betty was originally created as an employee of the Bugle anyway (so its a reinvention that wouldn't be completely out of left field, like MJ suddenly being a reporter feels like to me).

Because their history dating is not long.

I don't give a ****.

What does making MJ a reporter do for her character? It really doesn't fit her at all. They are creating a female character/love interest for Peter and naming her MJ solely because of the name recognition. What is the point of having MJ in the game if she is only there in name only?

have you played the game yet? Im sure Insomniac has a reason for this and know exactly what it will do for her as a character and how it will give her a role in the story and Peter's life

she's a reporter in the game? Neat. Does she mainly cover the fashion/celebrity beat? I can see her as a correspondent on E!, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Access Hollywood, etc.

I think you will play as MJ in the game. Using stealth to uncover clues. That's the reason she is a reporter.

I'm happy about her pro-active, especially considering how most media tends to sideline her, but that shouldn't be tied exclusively to her being a journalist.

What other legitimate reason would she have for snooping around?

That would be pretty cool, actually. It would be a nod towards her in the comics, while still doing the reporter bit.

Her stumbling into something related to the main plot and then becoming pro-active about it, especially if it will help Peter and save the city? Not to mention her providing emotional and moral support, and someone who has been through a lot alongside Peter. It would even be something cool if combined with the idea from above.

MJ's whole appeal was that she's a supermodel, aspiring actress, party girl, AND more. She was a lot more than what her public image gave, and the start of her relationship with Peter was a major step in his maturity. Making her a reporter misses the whole point of that, and while she might make for a neat character, it won't feel like MJ. Then again, I think most adaptations completely miss the point of her character.

She's likely the same age as Peter (23), so could have already been all that. Her current stage could be her evolution past that phase in her life. Its not like Peter is meeting her for the first time here. They've likely known each other for quite some time as this game is skipping alot of his origin, especially with key people in his life. They arent starting at square one with him, so I dont see why they need to do that with her

Ah, so you've played the game?

Please explain in detail how making MJ a reporter is somehow an assassination of her character.

I'm happy about her pro-active, especially considering how most media tends to sideline her, but that shouldn't be tied exclusively to her being a journalist.

I agree. The point about making her a journalist or a reporter is that it makes her a part of the plot and ties her to both Peter and Spider-Man in a way that eliminates contrived efforts. For example, having a crime spree going on during one of her modeling shoots or during some play she's starring in.

That would be pretty cool, actually. It would be a nod towards her in the comics, while still doing the reporter bit.

This is the point I was trying to make in my other post. MJ's character has changed quite a bit over the past 50 years or so. It's difficult to present that entire development in the span of what amounts to basically a snap shot in time like in a video game or movie. That's where tv in a serialized format has the advantage. So you have a choice as to how to approach MJ but it's really limited. Although she was introduced as the fun party girl really only probably meant by Stan to remain just that, she quickly became a fan favorite and went thru a big transformation over many years in an unplanned but at the same time a very organic way that ultimately turned out to be one of the best developed supporting characters in all of comics. But within the confines of a game you just can't really show that. It just doesn't work that way. Like Havoc stated, MJ has already gone thru that development and what we get is the latter version of MJ with her mask revealed. She's now realized as the compassionate deep strong perfect foil to Peter Parker. I don't know if anyone can explain it better than me, I'm not very good at putting my thoughts to paper sometimes. But that's the basic idea.

I don't see how it fits her character, or what it does for her character. It doesn't feel like MJ to me. It feels too Lois Lane lite for me.

Maybe I am wrong and I'll ultimately like how they handle it. But until that happens I am going to say that I am not really liking it right now.

I think it suits her fine.

If they can't find a way to introduce her into the world of both Peter and Spider-Man, without changing her into a cliche super hero girlfriend job, they have problems writing.

I'm sure the execution of this will be fine. But big picture, they're introducing an element to MJ that I think changes her (and presumably her relationship with Peter) too much. It's an element that has never been a part of the character, outside of the USM comics, in which it never really went anywhere.

so when does the game come out?
Is it worth investing in a PS4 to get this game?
