Playstation Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 3

I got the Digital Deluxe Edition. I can't believe I spent 100 bucks on one video game. Oh, man they got me lol.

Spoiler pic relating to Peter and the mystery leading villain;

Reminds me of Spider-Man 2.

its probably the lack of bowl cut and no big goggles

To each their own, but I'd WAY rather have a villain who happens to be balding than a grown man in 2018 with a bowl cut. And goggles can always be added later, that's not exactly his supervillain outfit. He might have them.

So, the reviews will drop on Tuesday September 4th. What are your guys' expectations for the ratings? Imo, anything less than a 9.0 is not good. Yeah 8s and 8.5s are still good scores and in most cases would be a game that is still of good quality but this being a AAA Spidey game and with the amount of hype and production that has been put into this as well as potentially being a game of the year contender, imo, anything less than a 9 is not good. Your thoughts?

Hopefully lots of 9's. I've only heard nothing but really positive reactions across the board, the only preview I've read that had any kinds of criticisms mentioned annoyance at the trope of activating towers to be alerted of crimes in the areas. Which I think shouldn't be much of a problem considering this isn't Assassin's Creed and you're Spider-Man and can just swing to any tower with ease.

Almost completely got spoiled from starting to read a YouTube comment just running down game spoilers casually. Stopped reading quick enough but I saw one thing I didn't know that's not the main villain, but it was something I've been expecting so not the worst thing to have spoiled. Why do people gotta do that stuff in public places without warning?

I'm intrigued. What was it? Spoiler tag it of course.

Ditto.

Scores don't phase me. I often turn off/stop reading the reviews before they reveal their score/ratings. They're too subjective. Each person has their own personally opinion on what a 9 out of 10 is.

Yeah, since there isn't any kind of standard for what the scores mean they're generally useless for any sort of specific judgement. Personally if I give a game an 8 it means I thought it was great, I save nine for games that I think are near flawless, and I could probably count on one hand the number of games I'd give a 10. 7 means I thought a game was good, 6 is mediocre, and 5 and below is varying degrees of bad. Some people however are much quicker to give out those high scores and have a much lower opinion of games they'd give 7 or 8. The numbers just aren't reliable for judging a consensus, or even the opinion of a single person if you aren't familiar with how they view the number system.

My thoughts are that this mindset is ridiculous. If great scores like 8 or 8.5 are not "good" based on the artificial expectations you have in your heads then we have a problem as a culture.

Every game that is at the 8.5 range is great. Period

8.0 or better is a good game. Once you start diving into the 7’s it’s generally not that great.

That being said they do tend to lean towards bigger titles and be exceptionally generous with their ratings on certain franchises.

Ugh, sounds like you want to be disappointed, or have an excuse to display your disappointment. Plenty of highly regarded AAA games are below 9. Hype is not just about quality. The amount of hype has as much to do with popularity of character and the understanding that a really good/great Spider-Man game = massive sales.

That being said, I'm expecting a lot of 8 to mid 8 reviews, which would certainly be good enough to not be disappointed in my eyes. A lot of people will probably downgrade it because of the hype as well. I'm expecting Infamous: Second Son type reactions, really good across the board, great in some reviewers eyes, but not God of War across the board. Basically 80-82 on metacritic. So excellent quality, not otherworldly. If it's below those numbers I'll be disappointed, if it's above I'll be extremely happy. Your outlook is just a recipe for disaster.

Keep in mind that reviewers tend to be a bit harsher nowadays compared to PS3/360 days which were full of hyperboles and overpraising, so it's harder for a game to get a high, 90+ Metacritic score. Sunset Overdrive got an 81 score and it's still one of the best games on the One, while the last Ratchet got 85. I expect Spidey ranging from 85-92, but don't put too much thought on this stuff.

I think it will get around a 90-94 on Metacritic they known what they are doing and the more I have seen the better the game looks.

Actually, 7 is good. At 8 it's great. I don't know at which point in time a 7/10 game was considered to be bad. The whole rating system is bs anyway. A lot of gems get overlooked, because people most of the time look at the score, instead of reading the review and immediately dismiss the game, because it doesn't have a rating of 8/10 or higher.

Isn't a score of 5/10 supposed to be average? Anything over 5 is above average.

I'm confident it will be really well-received. A lot of 8.5 and 9's I'd say.

I consider 5 to definitely be bad. An average might be a 6-6.5.

I remember waiting for release day on so many of the older Spidey games and seeing reviews before I got them and being disappointed seeing SM3 get 6's and below, and Web of Shadows getting 6's and below. Then I'd play those games and have fun with them but knew deep down I felt disappointed as a whole, too. The instant my disappointment really sank in with WoS was when I finished the game and wanted to swing around only to find you have to start the game again.

I liked Shattered Dimensions, that was fun for what it was and is probably as a whole one of the better games. Edge of Time blew, Peter David story and good voice acting couldn't save it. ASM was fun, might enjoy that game more than the movie. ASM2 was trash and once I beat it I never went back to play it ever again, because why? Gonna swing around and get blasted for being a menace? That's no fun.

Not for this game but tangentially related, a lengthy read but if you have the time and are a fan of the SM2 game this is an interesting account from the developers of their time making the game. Pretty in depth coverage of development from the first movie game and through SM2. I did not know they were originally including an entire underground tunnel system in SM2 that would have had enemies and boss missions (I was always thinking the Lizard mission would have just been a done in one go in a sewer). They confirm all those plans carried over into SM3 then, along with Lizard, Kraven/Calypso, and Scorpion. The tunnels didn't add anything to SM3.

For being a swinger who does not act like a menace in a not so friendly neighborhood. :o
Game's fatal flaws aside, I found myself enjoying it a bit more than its predecessor.

I still love pulling thugs to get hit by subway carts.

im expecting mostly 9s tbh. This truly seems like the Spider-Man game we have always dreamed of in every way. If you ask me, we really havent had a truly great Spider-Man game since Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man PS4 truly feels like its not only going to be the best Spider-Man game, but one of the best superhero games ever

The Menace system really is a fatal flaw (not that the game isn't littered with flaws regardless stemming from bad design and lack of polish), it stops you from just relaxing and swinging around, and constantly forces you to do the random side missions, which instead of being seamless pull you out of free-roam with loading screens. And because you're forced to do them so often it just highlights how unpolished those missions (and the game in general) are. The game literally punishes you for just wanting to have fun swinging around, and that is not fun. Those side missions should feel rewarding, instead you do them to delay the game from punishing you with task force drones and force fields blocking the streets.

In ASM2 if you did level select, you could choose what time of day of the city you wanted to swing in and the hero system was turned off

I did not have the time of day during level option.

I did not have the time of day during level option.

There isn't one, you choose a mission that happens to take place during the time of day you want, and you can roam without the menace system, but that's a workaround for a problem rather than an actual solution to it.
