Playstation Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 3

Actually, 7 is good. At 8 it's great. I don't know at which point in time a 7/10 game was considered to be bad. The whole rating system is bs anyway. A lot of gems get overlooked, because people most of the time look at the score, instead of reading the review and immediately dismiss the game, because it doesn't have a rating of 8/10 or higher.

A 8 like should be great and a 7 should be good but that is not how video games are really like rated. A movie with amazing reviews will get like mostly 7s and 8's but a game with like amazing reviews will get mostly like 9s and 10s and a really bad movie will get mostly like 2s and 3s where game will get like 5s and 6s. Even though its supposed to be 1-10 rating games for the most part are more like 5-10 with the way they are rated. You almost never see a game with like a 4 or lower.

I'm confident it will be really well-received. A lot of 8.5 and 9's I'd say.

I consider 5 to definitely be bad. An average might be a 6-6.5.

The problem with game reviews is that the majority (but not all) judge it like a school paper - let's say a review is on a scale of 100 (or 10.0) the 90's is great, the 80's is pretty good, the 70's is questionable but alright, the 60s' are considered borderline failure and anything less is a failure.

However, SOME critics (and more of them seem to fall under the out of 5 instead of 10 category) will treat 2.5 (aka 5 out of 10) as a completely mediocre but alright, average game. So one reviewer might award something a 3.5 out of 5 or a 7 out of 10 and like it a good deal more than another review being disappointed by a game and giving it a 70.

And that's not to say that one method or the other is THE way to do it. But then all these reviews get lumped together.

You are right that is like toldly how most people review games.

There isn't one, you choose a mission that happens to take place during the time of day you want, and you can roam without the menace system, but that's a workaround for a problem rather than an actual solution to it.

Hey, I took what I could get with a movie game haha. Worked enough for me. The system was stupid though. I would rather do crimes at my leisure. I would not have minded if you hit the menace meter and people just shouted rude things, but it was the attacks from drones and enemies and crap that annoyed me.

Expect to see a few 8.5 scores.

Do you also think the game will earn 10s or even 9.5s?

Hopefully lots of 9's. I've only heard nothing but really positive reactions across the board, the only preview I've read that had any kinds of criticisms mentioned annoyance at the trope of activating towers to be alerted of crimes in the areas. Which I think shouldn't be much of a problem considering this isn't Assassin's Creed and you're Spider-Man and can just swing to any tower with ease.

I hope this as well and with this game possible entering GotY territory it can only help that cause.

Scores don't phase me. I often turn off/stop reading the reviews before they reveal their score/ratings. They're too subjective. Each person has their own personally opinion on what a 9 out of 10 is.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions and their own personal rating system for whatever factors are important to you, however, that isn't what I was asking.

My thoughts are that this mindset is ridiculous. If great scores like 8 or 8.5 are not "good" based on the artificial expectations you have in your heads then we have a problem as a culture.

Every game that is at the 8.5 range is great. Period

Seems like you need to reread my post since you're replying to something I didn't even say. But, thanks for your input.

Ugh, sounds like you want to be disappointed, or have an excuse to display your disappointment. Plenty of highly regarded AAA games are below 9. Hype is not just about quality. The amount of hype has as much to do with popularity of character and the understanding that a really good/great Spider-Man game = massive sales.

That being said, I'm expecting a lot of 8 to mid 8 reviews, which would certainly be good enough to not be disappointed in my eyes. A lot of people will probably downgrade it because of the hype as well. I'm expecting Infamous: Second Son type reactions, really good across the board, great in some reviewers eyes, but not God of War across the board. Basically 80-82 on metacritic. So excellent quality, not otherworldly. If it's below those numbers I'll be disappointed, if it's above I'll be extremely happy. Your outlook is just a recipe for disaster.

To the emoboldened...Ugh, at no time did I ever say that the ratings nor the reviews had anything to do with my own or even someone else's enjoyment of the game. I don't hold the quality of anything let alone a video game to be based solely on what other people have to say about it. IMO, reviews can sometimes give other lines of thought that might be interesting but I don't use them as a barometer for how much I actually like it or don't. And since several people are having issues understanding my post, I'll try to reiterate, based on the hype and the potential for this game to be in the running for Game of the Year, what are the expectations for the ratings?

And now to the rest of your post...I actually am thinking the same however I would hope the game does score in the high 9s. I think that would be great for Spider-Man to have a game that is so highly regarded by both fans and critics and even better, a chance to win Game of the Year.

Keep in mind that reviewers tend to be a bit harsher nowadays compared to PS3/360 days which were full of hyperboles and overpraising, so it's harder for a game to get a high, 90+ Metacritic score. Sunset Overdrive got an 81 score and it's still one of the best games on the One, while the last Ratchet got 85. I expect Spidey ranging from 85-92, but don't put too much thought on this stuff.

Good point. And I wonder if reviewers will give the game extra points or maybe less either based on the character or the fact that it is developed by insomniac. I'm not really putting too much thought into this however I'm just wondering if the game will earn the kind of high marks that usually go with GotY.

I'm kind of expecting the same however if it scores really high I'll be ecstatic. I'd love to see Spidey get his due.
Well, he's getting his due with a AAA title. I don't see why being a GotY candidate should really matter if the scores are excellent (which generally 80's are). I get the high hopes, just don't get lost in them and miss the glory that this game is surely to provide.

Did you see my reply to you? While I appreciate your advice, the only thing I'm concerned about is how much I am going to enjoy the game, which after seeing as much as we have so far, it's a minor issue at this point.

My question about the ratings was merely to see if people are expecting this game to earn the kind of high marks needed to get GotY honors. And I'm basing this on how much insomniac/Sony/Marvel are promoting the game. It really only matters to me in as much as I think it would be great for Spider-Man to have that under his belt.

OK then, I get your point. My only issue was your remark that anything below 9 would be 'not good'. But we covered that and won't again.

I'm expecting an excellent/great game, but not GotY honors.

I've been reading on Twitter there is some negativity surrounding the game by people who've played early copies. I don't want to go digging too deeply into it in case I get spoiled by too much, but can anyone confirm?

I personally will wait to play the game, this sounds typical with the release so close. Off topic this format will take some getting use to.

The only negativity is coming from those who think they downgraded the graphics and that the DLC us coming too close to release so it is cut content from the main game(lol), the reception has been glowwing from 99% of the people who actually played the demo.

I think the two aspects that will determine if this is GOTY material or ''just'' a great game are the open world structure and the story, especially if they really nail the emphasis on Peter and his world colliding with Spidey's.

I'm seeing nothing but overwhelming positivity everywhere from people who are playing the game now or played demo's, only negative stuff I find are almost in a tinfoil hat kind of way trying to make the case that the graphics have been downgraded but every example I see just seems misinformed and comparisons from shots we've seen years before look just as good now if not better.

First off, we're down to the final 7 days!

It’s a pretty safe bet to say God Of War is getting GOTY.

GoW is in the running for sure but if this game gets great reviews and has positive backing from the community it still has a chance. And don't forget about RDR2.

I haven't been reading anything in the way of spoilers however I've not gotten the impression people are saying negative things about the game. Aside from the controversy surrounding the graphics downgrade and the release dates of the DLC, like others have said, I've personally seen nothing but lots of praise. Reviews are out in a few days so we'll see what they have to say.

I really hope they nail the open world aspect of the game. Imo, it's the most important part of any Spidey free roam game.

The World design, traversal, and random crimes are the most important part of any open world Spidey game for me, so far it all looks great, this final week of waiting is gonna be brutal.

My way of celebrating a week before release? Watch the first trailer again.

Cannot believe we got that in JUNE 2016.

I was so stoked. Had they said "Sepetember 2018" at the end of that I would have told them to **** off lmao. What a terrible wait. Hopefully it will be worth it though. Game looks great and I can tell a lot of effort went into it.

I don’t know God Of War got a lot of 10/10 reviews, so it’s definitely going to be hard to beat.

Photo mode reveal, definitely looks like one of the better photo modes I've seen. Definitely expect that this photo mode will take up hours of my time.

Wow, that is gonna be such a cool feature. They really thought of everything, makes the photo mode in SM3 look like child's play. Taking selfies while you dive off of skyscrapers! The comic book cover filters! The classic logos and art! That's just so cool.

The theme playing in that trailer, too... :hmr:
