A lot of dangerous optimism in these forums, especially today. I'm feeling as though if Sony decides to go on with the Spider-Man universe a lot of people on here are going to be crushed. False hope is building rapidly in here. It's almost as if this is actually happening, meanwhile... It's a bunch of random Spider-Man fans trying to predict the financial decisions of a multi-billion dollar company with their billion dollar superhero rights. Anything can happen...

Reminds me back when the Marvel Press conference was announced in october. There were the rumors of Sony and Marvel talking and with how big of an event it was, people were really thinking Spider-Man was coming home. I was also starting to believe it. Didn't end up disappointed in the end, though because after all of those announcements I was already going

Which is funny to me, due to the evidence of movies produced with 'Sony's creative control.' You'd think they'd want 'Marvel's creative control' to head up the project and then Sony could just sit back and collect some checks. Morons.

If Sony has proven anything, it's that they don't let go of "control" very easily. That's what worries me most.

They know how badly their decisions have cost them, yet they still have the arrogance to want to bury a character they know they have no concrete direction for.

The chances of an MCU deal being made are highly likely at this point.


With the leaks and the fact that they need to hold this summit in the first place-- especially when they were standing tall last year announcing the spin-offs, the MCU will at least be discussed thoroughly/extensively throughout. Like others have pointed out, Avi's going to be standing in the way... But hopefully those higher-ups wanting to look at the option again will sit him down. I'm sick of the guy, they should be too.

Avi Arad really fell from grace. I remember those interviews he was doing in the beginning of the year talking about how Marvel wasn't a problem and they should really be asking Sony for help...oops.

Why on Earth should Marvel/Disney even bother negotiating given how Sony is imploding. They can just sit back and see the price tag for the Spidey film IP continue to drop as Sony gets more and more desperate. Hell, if they wait long enough the rights may just revert automatically and they don't need to pay a dime. It's not like they don't have tons of other IP's to keep them busy in the meantime.

Sure, why not. A billion saved is a billion earned. Plus it may not be that long with all the recent developments. If Sony doesn't have a Spidey film in full production by 2017 then they loose Spidey.

I don't think that two studios with very conflicting ideas would be ideal for any character.

At this point, the best thing for all parties involved would be for Sony to sell the rights back to Marvel for a couple billion. That way, they get a hefty payday, Marvel has their golden boy back, and the fans get to see him interact with the rest of the rising stars in the MCU.

It's all speculation at the end of the day, because Marvel could very well muck it up worse than Sony ever did. My gut feeling, however, tells me that there's nowhere to go from here but up, but, I'll add that the upside is contingent upon a creative team that has a solid vision for the character. The tough part would be figuring out how to ingratiate a third iteration of not only the character, but his entire world with audiences again.

Its very easy to play with other peoples money, a couple of billion, lol

For two reasons:

1. It's better to just get Spider-Man sooner rather than later. Why allow Spider-Man to get sullied by another mediocre film?

2. Even though Spider-Man movies have been declining in the box office, it's still an extremely valuable IP. Even though the next film will most likely not cross the $700 million threshold, a Spider-Man film still has the potential to have a $1 billion film under its belt, especially if Marvel Studios produces it. Sony knows that it's a very valuable IP for Disney and thus its value isn't going to drop as fast as something else typically would.

Disney is going to want a clear line of distinction between their Spider-man and all that came before. I don't think they'll need another origin movie but they'll need to reference the origin at some point during one of their films to set the record straight about their Spider-man.

There are several ways of announcing that without retreading the same ground. Something as simple as Gwen being alive being in a gang with MJ, Harry, and Flash, would be enough to separate it from both Raimi and Webb.

I was thinking more along the lines of establishing the Uncle Ben character, which would all need to be in retrospect. The rest, well it's a pickle to not waste time on stuff that's already been covered while covering good ground that has been left unused by both Raimi & Webb.

That's the only aspect I think about when I consider whether or not the next Spidey project will undergo an origin story.

The character is so huge to who Spidey is, but maybe the general audience has understood that by now? Maybe they can show him in flashbacks? However, I don't know if that would work, as he's always a character who has heavy dialogue.
