I've not had chance much to go to the cinemas, but Jackman really impressed me, so I'd put him up for best actor.

How does The Illusionist compare to The Prestige? Does anyone know a UK release date?

The Prestige won't do as good as people are predicting. Its more of a fan boy movie than an Oscar movie.

The Departed will sweep major categories, mostly because the Academy owes Scorscese.

Also DeCaprio will take best actor. He is so due its not even funny. He deserved it for The Aviator. He deserved it for Gangs of New York. He deserves it now, and he'll get it. Matt Damon will be nominated as well (His role doesn't fall under the category of supporting by the way). Depp might get nominated again for Jack Sparrow, but next year he will win it.

Nicholson of Affleck will take Best Supporting Actor. Nicholson has a couple already, but it may also be his last chance...so I'm not sure which. Martin Sheen might be thrown in there. He did really well As Queendin.

Here is my big wacky prediction. Sasha Baron Cohen will get nominated for Best Actor. He won't win. But he'll get the nod. Borat seemed to be universally liked by critics (who make up half the academy) and the movie was recieved well by the masses, he will get a nomination. Also, I would be very suprised if he does not come to the Oscars as Borat with either Pamela Anderson or the prostitute as his date.

Let me sit on this and tag this thread for later.

POTC 2 for best picture?! the only thing that should be nominated for is a razzie!

Forest Whitaker for Lead Actor in The Last King of Scotland is the only one I am sure of, he was amazing.

I thought The Illusionist was a better film, because it didn't try to be bigger than it needed to be, and for a period film, it REALLY felt period.

Hit the nail on the head with that one.

if POTC2 gets anything (apart from maybe SFX), then it does show what a crappy year of films we've had, and how perverse, pointless and just clearly wrong the academy awards are!

For some reason, I think Will Smith could make it happen this year. He looks great in the trailers for Happiness.

Yeah...It won't. As much as I love the film, It definantly won't win any awards except for technical stuff.

I do see a nomination Daniel Craig though. Probably won't win, but at least a nomination

Best Supporting Actor: Steve Carrell for "Little Miss Sunshine". Seriously. At least deserves a nomination.

No way, this is DiCaprio's year, plain and simple. It has been coming since Gangs of New York.

Craig won't get the nomination, they are going to have two "gimmick" nominations. Sasha Baron Cohen and Johnny Depp for Pirates (like or hate the movie, Depp was stellar, plus they are building up to him winning for At World's End. Its like Lord of the Rings. They give the nominations, then the win on the final movie).

The way I see it...

Leo DiCaprio - Wins
Matt Damon
Will Smith
Cohen
or Will Ferrell
Depp
or Jackman (although so far The Fountain is getting panned by critics, so unlikely)

Interesting thread considering that the movies ussually groomed for Oscar contention get released around Christmas. Last year all the nominees in the "big" catagories, with the exception of Crash, were released in December. I think the "big" winners and nominees are from films that are still waiting to come out.

PS I love Martin Scorsese. He should have won an Oscar for Goodfellas. Maybe even one for Casino. But if he wins for the sloppily directed Departed I'm gonna be pissed. Any movie that takes place in Boston and has the Boston accents come and go should only win an award for Most Inconsistant. Any movie where the main crime boss is an Irish hood from Southie and has an Italian last name, should only win the award for Most Inadaquate Research.

I dug The Departed but it doesn't deserve to win anything except maybe a few Best Supporting Actor nods, and not to Damon or DiCaprio. Nothing wrong with either of their performances, with the exception of DiCaprio's I'll-Do-The-Accent-When-I-Feel-like-It approach to the dialogue. NO, the real gems in The Departed were Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen. Sadly, neither of these two will even be considered.

I can't see POTC2 to be mentioned for The Best Movie nomination.

It got very negative reviews from critics, what isn't so good.

Umm, wow you are misinformed.

Costello - Is more commonly Irish than Italian although it could be either. Just because it ends in an O and doesn't have "Mc" in it doesn't mean it is Italian, not Irish.

As for DeCaprio's accent change, it was intentional, he was a double agent. His accent changes based on who he is with.

Ofcourse it won't get a nomination for best picture because it's a freakin sequel to a lighthearted disney movie about Pirates and most of the time movie's with mixed reviews don't get nominated, I'm with you on that. But Superman Returns, The Da Vinci Code and all the other so-called big movies aren't going to be nominated for best picture either.

Psst, Cinemaman is still upset that Pirates embarrassed Superman.

Of course it won't get best picture though, thats common sense. Depp will get a nomination for Jack Sparrow, I think. He will probably win it for At World's End.
