Stephen King's Epic "The Dark Tower" - Part 1

I've just started reading this series. Half way through The Gunslinger. Great book so far.

First details on The Dark Tower TV Series revealed!

Since the first whispers of an adaptation of The Dark Tower began, it was as ambitious of a project as the source material, with plans for a feature film series and a television show. Its been many years since the murmurs of that plan made their way online, many directors and actors have come and gone from the project, but now with a feature film already in the can and set to be released next February, what is the status of the show?

Media Rights Capital and the film’s executive producer and co-screenwriter, Akiva Goldsman, spoke with EW about the Dark Tower series and revealed that it’s still in the cards. The show will primarily adapt the fourth book in the series, Wizard and Glass, which was primarily a prequel novel about the origins of Roland and will feature the return of Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, aka The Gunslinger, along with Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers. Since the story tells the origin of Roland, a younger actor will be cast in the role with Elba and Taylor serving as the framing device for the series. It’s possible that Matthew McConaughey could appear as The Man in Black in the series, as the character did appear in the story, though it’s possible he’ll be wearing a different face.


“In the movie, Roland is suffering tremendous loss. The most concrete, personal, existential heartbreak a character can have,” Goldsman tells the outlet. “If the movie chronicles his final reach toward hope again, the TV show is the loss of that hope.”
Currently MRC is planning for a 10 to 13-episode first season for the series, aiming for a cable partner before beginning production, hoping for it to be on air in 2018 in time for The Dark Tower‘s television premiere. Director Nikolaj Arcel and co-writer Anders Thomas Jensen are writing the script for the series though a different showrunner will be hired for the series.

The Dark Tower is scheduled for release on February 17, 2017.

A TV show is the best thing they could do for Wizard and Glass, it's a long story but quite an interesting one in Roland's youth, plus some characters from it appear later in the story.

I wonder if they'll use Marvel's Gunslinger Born comic? Its heavily based on Wizard and Glass's flashbacks, but incorporates scenes between Marten and Farson, and then Marten and the Crimson King.

The whole thing to me has just gotten confusing. Like, okay, they make Roland black in the film, fine. But then they say it's a sequel to the novels...where he wasn't black. So...when he got the horn, was his race changed as well? Now they're doing a prequel TV show, and I'm guessing young Roland will be black, or else it'll be tremendously confusing to anyone who hasn't read the novels. So it seems like not so much a sequel as an adaptation where the elements of the books have more or less happened but in the past.

Then...as much of a fan as I am of the Dark Tower novels as a whole, one thing I don't like is the Wizard and Glass backstory. Hopefully it'll be better here, but when they say the part where they're being more faithful to the novels is one of the parts where I think they should not be so faithful, that makes me a little wary. If it's a series with more than one season, though, it seems like there has to be changes because there just wasn't enough material for that.

The whole thing to me has just gotten confusing. Like, okay, they make Roland black in the film, fine. But then they say it's a sequel to the novels...where he wasn't black. Seriously, dude? I think Wizard and Glass is one of the best parts of the story. It's my second favorite book after The Drawing of the Three. Honestly, you might be the first person I've ever heard say that they don't like it.

It's just a role. The filmmakers will make the younger Roland black to match the film(s), but if one really needs to be literal, I suppose the film will be a sequel to a version of the books in which Roland is black. People understand about actors playing roles; I doubt the filmmakers will feel the need to insert a race change explanation for film-goers.

WaG is the only place where I like the Marvel comic better than the book...where the bulk of the novel is concerned. Intertwining Marten, Farson, and the Crimson King made it more enjoyable for me than the book. My personal high points in the series are The Wastelands and The Dark Tower.

Oh yeah, the Marvel comic is fantastic. The stuff with Jonas gets a little short-changed but it more than makes up for it by including the Farson/Marten/CK stuff. The Jae Lee artwork is what really brings it home. They couldn't have picked a better artist.

I'd love to see a full Dark Tower animated film series based on Jae Lee's work. I'm generally not too big on animated films, but I'd watch the sh** out of that.

Dang I love that new set. I'm re-reading the series. I'm done with the first two, in a month or so I will start with The Wasteland and Wizard and Glass.

I'm currently over half way through The Wasteland. First time reading this series. Brilliant books so far.

I would recommend to read The Wind through the Keyhole (Even though it was the last released) in between Wizard and Glass and the Wolves of Calla.

Okay just saw the trailer. So awesome. It is a rough cut because there is still some green screen on the leaked trailer.

But man oh man it looks great.

As most know this is not a direct adaptation...because it does not have to be. But looks amazing.

Roland, Jake, the Man in Black.....they all seem fantastic. Looks like they really captured the look of Roland's world. I wish Eddie Dean was in it, too. He's one of my favs from the series so far.

It's clear that for certain reasons they don't have to be strict to the books. But also this first film is combining elements from many of the books. Which makes sense because The Dark Tower Series is very complex, and if they just made a straight adaptation of The Gunslinger I don't think many would come back for a sequel. This has to lay out a lot more of the world of the Dark Tower series to let the audience understand more of what's going on.
