Paper Writes Dumb Article About Senator's Dumb "Chemtrails" Hearing

778644907395239719.png

An Arizona state senator scheduled a hearing this week about the "chemtrails" epidemic plaguing the area around Lake Havasu. A local newspaper wrote about the conspiracy theory as if it were fact, and further down the anti-science rabbit hole we go.

The first line is a doozy.

Mysterious white streaks in the skies over Mohave County are the subject of a meeting next week scheduled by state Sen. Kelli Ward.

Contrails. The word you are looking for is contrails. The word is a portmanteau of "condensation trails," or the thin wispy clouds that form when the warm, moist jet exhaust left behind by high-flying aircraft condenses when it comes in contact with the extremely cold, moist air of the upper atmosphere. The result is a cirrus cloud that lasts from a few seconds to hours depending on the humidity levels that day.

They are far from "mysterious." A+ reporting. Let's keep going.

[The senator] says the meeting was called to respond to concerns by her constituents about the so-called chemtrails that appear in the sky after jets fly by.

"So-called chemtrails," eh?

778662318011603854.png

Immediately next to this so-called paragraph is a photo of a sky full of contrails with the caption "chemtrails are shown over Lake Havasu City." Y'see, we're not saying that these so-called chemtrails exist, but look at this here picture we incorrectly titled "chemtrails." Coincidence!? I think not.

The state senator sponsoring the hearings, Dr. Kelli Ward (who holds both a B.S. in psychology and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine), says that the meeting is not to see if chemtrails exist, but rather to calm citizens irrationally concerned that they're being sprayed with billions of gallons of toxic chemicals by the Delta red-eye from LAX.

Ward said she is confident that the air and water in Mohave County are safe and pointed to naturally occurring minerals that could account for heightened levels of mercury and other minerals in blood tests.

"I have gotten a lot of communications from people who are concerned and there has been a sense that no one has been doing anything for them to address those concerns," she said. "I can't do field tests on the water, but I can connect them to the people who do."

The newspaper interviewed two Havasu residents to see what they had to say about the epidemic. One small business owner says that he read on the internets that chemtrails are real, and that since the government lies to us, "there's definitely something going on." Another resident had this to say after noting that she's seen chemtrails for about two years now:

"Every time they do chemtrailing there is some dramatic change in the weather. I noticed it this weekend and then it got very windy," Cramer said. "I'm not a scientist and I don't know what's in the (chemtrails). I think we have a right to know instead of worry about it every day."

The scariest part of the article is the fact that two representatives from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality are passing up the chance to say "this is a ridiculous conspiracy theory and you people should be ashamed of your stupidity" to punt on the issue entirely. The agency told the News-Herald that the meeting will focus "on the department's lack of regulatory authority over any type of chemical spraying."

Hell, fly me out there (on a chemmobile, of course) and I'll hold the meeting for you. Are you ready?

Chemtrails simply do not exist.

That's all they need to say at the meeting. Despite what Mohave County's finest thinkers may have to say about the matter, chemtrails do not exist exist.

If that fails, my next advice is to step outside and take a nice, deep breath.

These people are complete idiots and I have some bad news for you if you believe in chemtrails, unfortunately, you too are an idiot

Okay, i'm abit confused. It's true what she did was stupid but that said, the guy in the bike hit a stationary object, right? her car was already parked, and its not that she suddenly slammed on the brake whike the guy was riding right behind her car...

It's stupid that she parked her car because of some damn ducks, but she could've easily stopped because something else, like her car suddenly malfunctioning or flat tires. How is it that the biker couldn't avoid hitting a stationary object? speeding? not paying attention to the road?

That's true. If her car broke down in the same spot, would the motorcyclist still crash right into it?

It's possible too that the biker was speeding or was careless himself, but of course, we don't know the details and I don't want to jump the gun.

However, as stupid as she was, I still don't think she deserves life in prison.

That article was enough of that stupidity for me. I know if I venture in there it will only lead to me getting a probationary ban

Chemtrails exist in so far as water is a chemical and it produces clouds that resemble streaks in the sky when an airplane causes them as it flies over.

So technically they "exist" in the way clouds exist. We should all be afraid of the clouds.

Yeah...when i read the story, my first thought was the guy hit a stationary object,he should've been able to avoid hitting her car, unless he was speeding and/or being careless himself.

And there's no way that she should spend her life in prison for this...and i don't think that they will send her for life either.

Life in prison does seem extreme when you see people who actively murder other people get out of prison after a few decades or sometimes less than a decade.

Yeah.

You can't assume that someone is gonna see your car. Stupid enough to park not he left hand side is baffling.

But boy, one mistake like can cost the lives of two people. It could've been like any other day but she screwed it up and people have died over it. However... I don't think she deserves to be in prison for life. Her act for the ducks was absolutely careless, but not malicious.

I agree. Though I will withhold my judgment until a sentence is passed. This woman shouldn't do jail time, IMO. Especially when the victims' family is asking for her to be released and not ruin yet another life. Sentences should have purposes (and there are many valid purposes for a judge to give a sentence). IMO, jail time would not serve any purpose of sentencing.

Sentences can be punitive, but considering there was no malicious intent and the victims' family is asking for leniency, punishment seems shortsighted. A young, 20-something made a very dumb mistake that was not influenced by malice or pre-meditated. Punishing her will accomplish nothing but destroying yet another life.

Sentences can be intended to rehabilitate. This girl does not need rehabilitation.

Sentences can be intended to deter, but what would be deterred? These are very unique circumstances. There is no deterrence value to be gained from incarceration.

The girl should pay heavy fines, be sentenced to a lot of community service (specifically speaking on driver safety) and lose her license for a very, very long time and that should be that.

Indeed Matt, I doubt sending her to prison would accomplish anything. I don't think people parking their cars on the highway is such a problem that a harsh sentence should be put down to make others think. I'm sure tons of community service, a hefty fine and no driving for a considerable amount of time is more than sufficient.

Life imprisonment does seem way extreme, especially when deliberate, malicious murders often don't get that much. Rapists and child molesters get slaps on the wrist sometimes. They all deserve far worse than this woman.

Agreed. Her heart was in the right place, but she just didn't think through what she was doing. It happens. We all make these kind of mistakes. This woman and the two deceased simply had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time that turned this mistake into a tragedy. Sending this woman to prison for an accident that is the result of an action that was done with good intent doesn't help anyone. If the victim's family wants her to not do jail time then the DA and judge need to listen to them. I don't think she should lose her license tho, because if she lives in an area outside of the city then she wont have access to public transportation which will severely harm her chances of holding down a job or being able to buy groceries and other necessities or going to the doctor when she is sick. If however she has access to public transportation then suspend them. Community service would probably be good too.

Tourist in Flip-Flops Rescued From One of Scotland's Highest Mountains

779745872102409615.jpg

A tourist had to be rescued after attempting to climb one of Scotland's highest mountains while wearing flip-flops. He wanted to see snow.

The man slipped and was found with two friends half way up the 4,000ft Aonach Mòr, where they were searching for snow. A team from Lochaber Mountain Rescue were called out and stretchered the man to the mountain's gondola lift and then on to an ambulance, which took him to the hospital. The Press and Journal spoke to rescue team leader John Stevenson, who said:

"One of our team members, John Macrae, actually hurled one of the flips-flops and told the guy 'That's how much use they are on the hill'.

"They said they wanted to stand on snow in Scotland. We don't know if they actually did. The grass was wet enough to have an accident – especially in flip-flops."

Stevenson said that the three men apologized for "all the fuss."

If a bottle of good scotch was not involved in this I will be very disappointed. Seriously, who the hell climbs a mountain in flip flops?

Vet says he was asked to leave Walgreens because of service dog

DALLAS - A North Texas veteran is upset. He says the manager of a local Walgreens store kicked him out because of his service dog.

Christopher Goodson, who served with the United States Marine Corps, said the altercation happened Thursday at the store on Galloway Avenue in Mesquite.

He had just walked in to buy a drink when he said the manager told him to "get the dog out."

American Exchange Student Pulled Out of Giant German Vagina

780116268095036077.jpg

There is a giant, marble vagina on the grounds of Germany's Tubingen University Institute of Microbiology. If you are an American exchange student and someone dares you to climb into said vagina, you should not take that dare. You will get stuck. And then someone will have to call the fire department saying that you are "stuck in a stone vulva." That would be really embarrassing for you.

The student who learned a hard lesson in proper lubrication had to be rescued by 22 firemen—who drove in on five firetrucks flanked by a number of paramedics—and who did not need any tools or implements to free the man. They just used the "pull out" method.

Erick Guzman, a witness to this dare gone wrong, said that the man freed from the giant, marble vagina was just trying to take a picture of himself inside it.

"The fire department was not really amused, and he was really embarrassed," Guzman said.

The sculpture has been on the campus for 13 years and was commissioned for $173,000 from Peruvian artist Fernando de la Jara. It is called "Pi-Chacan," which roughly translates to "making love" in English.

I can't believe the fire department was not amused by that. I'd've been laughing my ass off.

Ugh it drive me crazy when I hear about people with service animals being discriminated against! :cmad: I wish everyone of them would sue these types of places so these idiots would learn

The Germans are not known for their ability to find things amusing

Northwestern's Journalism School Can't Spell Its Own Name

780877796259416613.jpg

In 2010, Northwestern University's esteemed, sanctimonious Medill journalism school changed its name to include the phrase "integrated marketing communications," raising a few eyebrows among the journalists-who-care-about-honesty set. Now, Medill is apparently struggling to spell its own title. Instant karma?

Diplomas handed out to honors students at Medill's graduation over the weekend read "Medill School of Journalism, Media, Itegrated Marketing Communications," which, in case you missed it, leaves out a letter from "integrated." The lack of an "and" is apparently intentional.

A representative of the university told Romenesko the issue only affected a handful of diplomas:

"It appears that about 30 of the more than 250 diplomas given out at Saturday's two graduation ceremonies had a spelling error. The diplomas are issued by the university, so we will work with the NU registrar's office Monday to provide new diplomas to these students."

According to Kit Fox, the alumnus who spotted the error, "students are mostly taking it with good humor."

Joe Biden, Everyman, Is Poor Like You

While speaking at the White House's Summit on Working Families on Monday, Joe "Wilmington, Delaware" Biden said that despite what everyone thinks, he only has a couple polyester suits and a tub of old shoe polish to his name.

"Look, Biden, man, you've got a mildly expensive suit on," he said to the room, echoing what he presumed everyone was thinking. He then went on to admit that he is the poorest man in Congress, but he still makes a lot of money. So how could Joe "The Joey B" Biden actually be poor like other Americans? For starters, he doesn't have a savings account.

"For real!" He briefly mentions "my struggle," while asserting that his bindle-carrying-down-the-railroad-tracks lifestyle is nothing compared to people who are from where he is from (Downtown Delaware).

Biden valued his assets in 2013 as between $260,000 and $940,000, according to USA Today.

It should be a felony if this man does not run for President in 2016! I really want to see all the crazy crap he comes up with to try and one-up Hillary. It's going to be pure hilarity :woot:

Man Sues Airline After Flying to Grenada Instead of Granada

780773685904711460.jpg

One is a Spanish city founded in the 11th century, famous for its moorish architecture; the other is a Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela and a world-leading producer of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. You say Granada; I say Grenada.

Edward Gamson, an American dentist, had his heart set on the former — Granada, Spain — but flew to Grenada instead on a recent vacation. Now, he's suing British Airways, alleging that the airline's bookers made the mistake. Gamson told the Independent:

"I have a lifelong interest in Islamic art. I'm also of Spanish Jewish heritage so it was something I had always wanted to do to visit Granada and the Alhambra. I made it absolutely clear to the booking agent I wanted to go to Granada in Spain. Why on earth would I want to go to Grenada in the Caribbean if I was flying back to America from Lisbon?

"It's just so sad. A trip we had been really looking forward to was ruined and ... [British Airways] won't do the decent thing."

Gamson and his partner never made it to Spain, and British Airways refused to reimburse their $4,5o0 first-class tickets. The lawsuit seeks $34,000 in damages.

Judge James Boasberg waxed literary in a ruling against the airline, which attempted to have the suit partially dismissed earlier this month. He wrote in his decision:

"This case proves the truth of Mark Twain's aphorism that 'the difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug'. Except here only a single letter's difference is involved."

If this story sounds eerily familiar, it's because last year, a 62-year-old woman with cancer made the same mix-up after putting a visit to the Alhambra — Granada's famous historic Islamic temple — on her bucket list. Her tickets were reimbursed.

No word on whether the Gamsons had any fun on their accidental Caribbean vacation. I hear Grenada has beautiful beaches.

Okay I know the airline screwed up and I do think they should reimburse the guy but some of this is on him too. No way he didn't get emails for the ticket confirmation or look at the ticket when he was at the airport. Seems like stupidity on both parties here

It's not the first or even second time. I remember reading a similar thing last year where it happened to an elderly lady and another time before that.

And that is a reason I have autocorrect disabled, except to suggest a correction. Sometimes it comes in handy and you really did misspell a word.
