Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 31

this has been pointed out before 'round these parts, but the ostrander suicide squad, which ayer seems to be most inspired by, took on supernatural threats, as well as a major threat from apokolips, so the base plot of the movie sounds to be faithful to the team's history. i think there's a general assumption that the squad is a black ops group, but what made them so much fun when they debuted was the outlandish villains they took on. their debut, in fact, was in ostrander's 'legends' which saw them dealing with the aforementioned apokolips and it wasn't the last time they faced off against darkseid and his minions. and yes, it was just as ridiculous that captain boomerang, deadshot, rick flag, bronze tiger and other members were fighting wizards and new gods, but it was also a big part of its charm.

It's true to the comics, but not everything translates well to film.

Well I saw it this morning and thought it was ok. The acting saves it with Will Smith and Jay Hernandez sticking out for particular mention.

I don't know what happened in the editing room but for me the beginning and end were strong, but it all meant little because the middle, as in a good hour, is so poor. I can't really say much more than that. For example El Diablo calling them his family towards the end, when based on what we saw before that, it's not earned.

It was a likeable experience for the acting alone. That's the best I can say for it. Leto really isn't in it enough to judge him but safe to say his Joker will stand out as unique. I really feel that I have to see him interact with Affleck in a story he's central to before I can give a definitive opinion.

But I do think it's silly to write him off based on his role in this film. Some people are just eager to confirm their own pre-conceived opinions to be frank. I'm not referring to anyone here when I say that moreso the hacks that make a living from this kind of thing.

Ultimately a decent but disappointing experience. I think 2.5/5 is fair, as in it's simply a middling effort. Critics have been harsh again.

You actually sound pretty close to the consensus opinion on RT. You say 5/10 and the average score is 4.7/10. Pretty close. A 5/10 is also something you'd generally expect to be seen as rotten.

Maybe he wanted to see if he could pull it off

But by the same token can't you say the same people who say that he's the best Joker or is their favorite are also eager to confirm their pre conceived notion?

Difference being I haven't seen anyone declaring him to be the best Joker ever. I've seen plenty claim he's butchered the character though and "knew he would suck the second they saw the first image of him."

I have people who want to watch this later in the month but noone free this weekend so will probably turn up alone. Tonight if there's room when I go, otherwise tomorrow morning.

That's what El Mayimbe said but every single of his Skwad rumours was wrong.

Oh right. I remember how Jim Parrack was playing Deathstroke because Joe Mangianello passed on the role (all bullsh**), Tom Hardy dropped out because Rick Flag was the villain, Ike Barinholtz was playing Hugo Strange, etc.

And then he has the nerve to pat himself on the f***ing back because he knew Bohemian Rhapsody was used in the second trailer. What an a**hole.

/waits for Umberto to call me out on Twitter and for his legion of bobblehead fans to back him up and tell him how awesome he is

I wonder how many cast members are regretting that SKWAD tattoo now.

We also had a "leaked" plot with Rick Flag turning evil at the end and dying.

But in their initial appearance when they fought Brimstone the Enchantress was on their side. without her they would have all died before they stopped him.

Ive seen/heard it

i won't be able to argue for or against it's execution until i see it, but i applaud him for sticking with what made the squad a hit when it debuted back in '86. in the eyes of some (or many, judging by rt), ayer may not have pulled it off, but i firmly believe the concept can be achieved in any medium, so long as the writing and execution are there. all comic book movies are ridiculous in theory. black widow, hawkeye, and batman also have no right going up against supernatural threats, but the first two at least, have been made to work through good direction, and the same's more than possible with the squad.

I'm not really bothered by the RT or what is certified rotten. 2.5/5 on my own scale reflects what my opinion is of the film: average with both strong and weak aspects. There was nothing about the film though that made me want to be particularly scathing. Just disappointed

Not many is my guess. They had an amazing time working on the film, which is why some of them got the tattoo.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to with the Tom Hardy thing.

Although, after seeing the movie, I DO wonder if he dropped out because the character was kind of worthless. I know some stuff got left on the cutting room floor with Flag, but I still feel like the character would have been beneath an actor of Hardy's ability.

That's a bit petty and sticking the boot in needlessly to be honest. Film may have been poorly received but that doesn't mean it effects the experience those guys had together.

I know for a fact Joel Kinnaman regrets getting it. He got the biggest one on his arm.

Oh yeah, he said something about it on GMA. lol

Will didn't get one because he's a "grown ass man"

Why would they?
You think an RT score will make somebody regret a tattoo?
Oh, he just wants to go "nyah-nyah" over his own preconceived and ill-informed notion that the franchise is doomed.

Again that seems like kind of the consensus. Of course some critics have been harsh, but there's also been those that downright like it, and the RT score is low because being average/mediocre isn't something that will get a critic to recommend the movie.

He could always just spend a lot of time squatting at the gym and have the "S" removed so that it reads "QWAD".

even with the enchantress, you still have a human who throws boomerangs as a team member in a world of meta-humans. he, and the rest, should have by all rights died out the gate. likewise, the furies should have theoretically wiped them out, but their powers adjusted to the plot, which happens all the time in comics. these stories, like any art form, are metaphors, and trying to force them into what should have 'really' happened is folly. the trick is to make the unbelievable believable, and maybe ayer didn't pull that off in the eyes of some, but to quote grant morrison, with stories like this, the only thing that's impossible is the impossible. it's all in the execution.
