Supergirl Supergirl Costume Discussion Thread

The only major change I'd make likely won't be made, so I'm just hoping for different (and better looking) boots and a thinner belt.

Supergirl needs to look fashionable and stylish even while fighting crime, and combining tights/leggings with skirts is a current fashion trend, so it makes sense that her costume would reflect that trend (especially if it's made by Wynn).

Why does DC insist on muting their colours so much?! Here's a quick edit:

Heres a good edit a redditor made. Credit goes to u/legiTURDle.

Don't like the blue tights under the red skirt. It just highlights the boots even more and makes her look stripey down below. There's more of a Halloween costume look to it when she has blue tights than as they are in the original.

Looks great I think. I really wish the MOS suit (which I do quite like) could have gone for this level of simplicity. Can you imagine what a regular, faithful Superman suit would look like in this style and materials and colours? It would be awesome!

This is my feeling as well and I love the MOS suit.

I hope this Supergirl suit will be an example to future comic movies that simplicity can look a lot better than trying to have too much going on.

This might actually be the best "Super" suit of the last decade because it manages to look good and modern but not over complicated and busy, which both the Superman Returns and MOS suits didn't quite achieve.

Why did the Matrix Supergirl have probably the most iconic costume compared to the Kara Zor-El costumes? It seems odd that it should be the case. And the Helen Slater costume is based on that (unless her costume was the inspiration for the Matrix one). And again now, Melissa's costume takes inspiration from that too.

Not that I'm complaining, because this is my favourite version. But I'm just curious why the other costumes haven't quite filtered into popular culture in the same way.

Because, at least in the case of the shows, it gives the costumes room to develop and change over time. We've already seen Flash's costume have adjustments made to it, and judging from the pilot, we know that he'll eventually wind up with something closer to the classic costume.

I'm sure the same applies to Supergirl.

Takes away the bare legs because they are too politically incorrect.

But gives her thigh high stripper boots. Go figure.

Why does it have to be a case of political correctness?

Tights are the way to go if you want her to wear something underneath her skirt. Leggings just look awkward.

My preference is still for a Superman-style costume (no skirt) with short New 52 style hair,

but for an updated version of the classic costume, it's pretty good. Nothing trashy, thank god, and I dig the color & material of the top. The belt, skirt, and boots could be a little more slick though.

hmmm....

I like the costume. at first glance, it gave me a kind of Fleischer vibe. did anyone else get that?

however, the picture/pose of Melissa I'm not feeling.

maybe it's the hairstyle or lighting. but it makes her look a bit "older" if that's the right word. maybe that's intentional and part of the throwback Fleischer vibe.

but...idk.

I like the costume but this picture doesn't sell me on Melissa as Supergirl.

I want them to make the Flash costume out of the top fabric, it would look so much better.

Now that you mention it, it does. The "S" is much in line with Fleisher/Kingdom/Post-911/Superboy's though the first to have it with Blue rather than Black.

I definitely think they're going for a retro vibe with this design with the rich, deep colors and clean lines. My favorite details are the red stitching and the shield.
