Elba had a lot in common with Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men. They were cast in a supporting role in a franchise and then ended up becoming too big for the role, so they weren't happy. We should be glad Marvel didn't force Heimdall as a main character to compensate like what Fox did with Mystique.
I definitely think this was the case, both actors when they were starting up were just happy to sign on the dotted line. Blew up. Got stuck in a multi-picture deal but still got paid peanuts based on their contract, when in their minds they could go do other movies and get paid a lot more. I'm not as familiar with Elba's case but for JLaw, she's had quotes like "I put my foot down" demanding that they reduce my make-up time (she insists it's because she's had bad reactions to the make-up) and I do know from multiple sources on the prequel films that Singer et al did have to write around Ms Lawrence's request. Another quote is that she'd "rather be in Guardians."Elba had a lot in common with Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men. That's certainly the nice way of putting it.Sure, some of the dialogue was a little weird and I went in with low expectations coming off JL, but it was extremely fun
Doing that joke twice at the beginning of Ragnarok during a very cool looking scene was a bit much for me and I was worried it might mean we were going to get drowned in terrible jokes for the rest of the film. But for the most part I liked the jokes (much better than the comedy in the previous Thor films), just wish there had been less of it overall. I would have culled the weakest 30% of jokes, even if they were good by themselves, and put them in the extras. That would give the serious parts even more heft. I loved the film but it could have been considerably better for me with that. I definitely would have cut Korg's joke about the foundations when Asgard was destroyed. Yes as a standalone joke it's funny, but it comes at too much of a cost to the drama and sadness of the moment. For me, the humor kept taking me out of potentially cool moments. Right from the beginning we get an awesome set up: Thor is tied up in Surtur’s lair with him being taunted and tortured by this badass lolking demon creature, within the first three minutes Waititi is winning me over....and then I get taken out of the moment by that gag of him interrupting Surtur’s monologue as he twirls around the chain. And then theres Surtur pouting “its not an eyebrow its a crown!”
I dunno, I know a lot of you are reading this thinking “jeez dude lighten up” but I think I prefer a little bit more balance with the humor. I love how Wan tackled the humor in Aquaman for example. I dont think anyone would accuse that movie being anything close to dark or gritty. It was light, colorful, fun and humorous and yet it took its story very seriously. Patrick Wilson’s Ocean Master never broke character the way Waititi had his characters do consistenty in Ragnarok.
I would never have predicted such a grand third act for Aquaman. Many CBMs struggle with their third act whereas this was amazing and a great resolution to everything that came before.I will never claim AM is as weighty as some other folms but as someone that does love Aquaman that moment gave me chills the three times I saw it in the theater. I was very worried the movie would just be a freight train of quips but instead they balanced it out.
And they gave me all I could have wanted in that third act.
Yeah. I think he can still play a major CBM role in future as his face was covered enough in the Thor films.Elba had a lot in common with Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men. I love Ragnarok with my whole heart, but honestly, that opening scene made me think I was gonna hate it. That's the one part of the movie where the jokes felt forced and just too much, imo (I did chuckle at "big eyebrow," but I didn't need Surtur's "it's not an eyebrow, it's a crown!"). Whenever I rewatch, I always skip straight to the opening fight, lol.

I think they were going for Big Trouble in Little China with Ragnarok in a way
I could kinda see that, yeah.
Oh, man. Now I want to see Kurt Russell play Thunderstrike. Or voice Beta Ray Bill.
Well, he was Ego
