Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 57

One could argue it adds to the kid like nature to the movie.

I wanted to like Shazam but I found it forgettable.
I'm fine with his Infinity War characterization. He's broken, damaged, suffering immensely, physically and emotionally, and I think it's mostly being treated dramatically. He has some comedic bits, but I think it's all mostly consistent with his situation.I think the fat Thor thing is dumb for a variety of reasons: He's an alien space guy with superpowers that's lived for hundreds of years and it only takes five years for him to get fat? I think the fat stuff is almost all treated like a joke. Even the crying with his mom, I think is acted with a comedic tone. I think the emotional resolution to that is an easy out. Not the him giving up being king thing, that's whatever, but the idea "everyone fails at what they're not supposed to be" or something like that. 1. I think it adds pointlessness to him becoming king at the end of Ragnarok. 2. Being a broken man from the loss of half his people is failing at what he's not supposed to be how? 3. I think it leans again into the Thor's mostly comedic attitude from Ragnarok and doesn't use his intense, painful dramatic use in Infinity War.

I don't want him to floor a bunch of enemies with his powers. I wanted Thor to be emotionally broken and thinking that all he's capable of being is a bloodlust driven monster, thinking that's all he is and every part of himself that's tried to be more was him lying to himself, blaming that part of himself on Thanos winning. I wanted this to be resolved with them needing Uru metal to form the new gauntlet and him, for good, relinquishing his warrior-ness, and becoming entirely committed to peaceful heroism, with the symbolic gesture of giving stormbreaker to be melted down for the gauntlet.
I feel like Hawkeye already took the bloodlust driven emotionally broken spot in Endgame.

Big Lebowski Thor was deeply depressed. Asgardians can get fat (like Volstagg)

Ed Brubaker was on an episode of Fatman On Batman recently(which I can’t post due to language) and it’s pretty heartbreaking. He basically says that Marvel doesn’t really pay him that much for his co-creation - the Winter Soldier despite how much they use the character, and he was initially barred from going to the after party.

Kind of brings to mind this article:

Thanos Creator Was Paid More for 'Batman v. Superman' Than All Marvel Movies Combined
I know Marvel came through with the money for the Cloak and Dagger/Rocket Raccoon creator Bill Mantlo. His family seem pretty grateful given his situation.

I have mixed feelings on for hire writers getting paid for other media adaptations.

Writers/artists that create the characters should certainly get paid for use of the characters in other media such as film, television or video games.

Writers who adapt pre-existing characters I'm slightly unsure of. The serial nature of comics means you can have a minor or supporting character created decades ago by a writer who gets revamped into a significant character years later which is what happened with Bucky/Winter Soldier. Someone like Chris Claremont probably deserves to get paid as much as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby given who much he shaped the X-Men.

Realistically if Marvel and DC had to pay a big amount to use the characters they probably wouldn't use them and have more created for film/television characters since they aren't going to devote a large chunk of the budget for secondary characters.

Hawkeye fulfilled a murderous spot. Thor's can be someone who thinks all he is is a bloodlust driven madman and that any change he's had wasn't legitimate.

Volstagg, as far as I think the movies give the impression, had been the way he was for a long time. Thor getting that way after a few years is what I question. And how it was used in the movie.

I agree. Tonally it worked for the character. But something like that would not work for Batman or Superman. Affleck looked like the Michelin Man in Justice League and he was barely able to move in the action scenes.

5 years? Yeah. I've seen some wrestlers with incredible physique shrivel up or bloat out in that time frame. His entire lifestyle changed. You make it sound it's like within 1-3 years.

I have seen people do that in like....1 year. 5 years is more than believable.

Balder during simonson's arc.

Same here. I had really high hopes for it but it was forgettable, the action really wasn't great, most of the humor fell flat and I still think they rushed his "siblings" joining in on the Shazam powers. I know that was the moral of the story but still.

I've been meaning to watch it again to see if I like it more or less than I did when I saw it in theaters.

Maybe my high expectations made me think of Shazam less but as of now I just found it to be okay.

Back then I would have been content if we had just gotten to The Avengers and that's it. It seemed like such a pipe dream back then, I don't think anyone was even thinking of seeing Thanos in a movie back then given how Galactus was treated in FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

So true. I was so amazed that The Avengers happened, and then that it worked, that for a while I thought everything else was a bonus. Credit to Marvel for continuing to push after that and not rest on their laurels.

Random tidbit but I have a mind to watch Daredevil from the beginning again. Haven’t watched it in ages.

Even might try to watch the (underrated) Defenders.

I've been meaning to watch it again too. Maybe I will during the break between F&TWS and Loki
