I'm confused as to how we already have a number for Friday when it's still 6PM on the east coast.

It's a projection, kinda like with election results. I assume the studios and industry media have algorithms to project the daily take based on ticket sales to a certain point that day.

$140mil still seems too high for these numbers, am I crazy? It’s looking more like $120m-$130m to me, optimistically.

As much as I'm sure we'd all love it to do 140mill off the bat , I think your estimate is more likely.

I appreciate there's alot of excitement around the response to the film, but I also hope that the expectations stay in check, so we don't end up with a bunch of " The Film Under performed expectations !" headlines , if it doesn't make 140 Million this weekend.

Deadline has revised their projection down to $115-120 for the weekend.

However, my local theatres seem to be very walkup heavy. Most showings today were basically empty as of yesterday, but they seem to be filling up right before showtime. Will be interesting to see if actuals start coming in higher than projections as a result.

For Thursday through sunday, 140 to 150 ( ish )
I feel good wom is going to get out tonight and we will see even more film goers tomorrow night.
If I'm wrong I'm wrong. 120 to 130 mill would be good as well.

Just want to say, 120m would be a very good number. I think it will be higher, but even if it isn't, still good. And a lot of strong weekdays ahead.

I honestly think WB be happy as long as it breaks $100. It will finally give them a blockbuster that isn't reliant on Legendary.

A 100 mill would be pretty bad.

Meanwhile, it's somewhat limping along in Italy, with 272k on day 2, for a 711k total.

Hopefully the weekend days and possible momentum from overseas can give it a little boost.

Haven't managed to find any data for other countries in which the movie has already opened yet.
Italy: €322k yesterday, passing the €1M mark.

Yea i think F4 will do better but hopefully Warner bros arent discouraged by comparing to other Cape films and are not expecting 800 mil plus. Hoping 600-800 mil range is at least where it gets to somehow and they are happy with that.

The MCU didn't start out with a billion dollars.

Superman strikes new ground for DC in movies.

Warner Bros. knows they're in a Batman Begins after Batman & Robin and X-Men: First Class after X-Men Origins: Wolverine type of situation here.

That's what I was thinking as well .

In Superman's case, it has 20 years worth of underwhelming to polarizing adaptations ,and Supermen ,who didn't capture the audiences imagination .

With this recent reboot , most people who see the film, like it , or love it .

Yes, there are people who don't like the film , but the reaction is pretty positive overall, even by those you would think wouldn't like the film.

That's a vast difference from the responses to Superman Returns in 2006 and Man Of Steel In 2013.

The critical and audience response to this is much different than those two attempts .

Do I think WB was hoping for 700m+? Yes. James Gunn didn't say that number out of nowhere and it's where the original GotG got to. But they probably also know less was most likely on the cards and it won't be bad. Just not huge. It's potential domestic hall being over 300m is a very good thing.

But yeah, they need to be worried about OS. Because these numbers don't scream "we don't like it". They imply disinterest in the genre as a whole. A 95m-100m opening isn't great.

The MCU is not a good comparison. There are a lot of factors that separate it.

Begins is a better comparison, but now we'll have to see how the legs are. Superman is doing well in terms of reactions. Begins was another type of beast. I think people forget how much it grew over time, even before we saw that first TDK trailer.

Now while home video isn't what it use to be, Superman has streaming.

Yeah, he didn't. He was specifically quoting and disregarding an article that was making the rounds that made the point about the $700M.
Why did he quote that article? That number? Why did he do it at all?

A false report about the movie having to crack $700M to be considered a hit was making the rounds and he shot it down.

I'd love to see you keyboard warriors actually having to manage the pre-release for a blockbuster movie. 😂

Anyway, F1: The Movie opened to similar numbers Internationally and has gone on to have solid legs.

Maybe word of mouth will help Superman in the long run, too.

Y'all need to relax a bit. The movie has just opened. Let's not add any more doomsday prophecies and negativity to the active bitterness from the haters online. Sit back , relax, watch the movie (I have yet to wait a few days) and enjoy the moment and spread the word if you liked it.

Would it have been nice if the Int'l numbers were higher? Sure. Are we hittin' the iceberg? Nah! Stay cool, folks.

If I was directing 200m movies, you'd never hear from me, Nolan style. Hell if I was making 200k movies, the same. :funny:

As to why not, you just answered it. You give life to these things and show your hand. And Gunn does this a lot. There's a reason why you don't see this out of a lot of studio heads. It puts a number on the board. WB did that themselves with 500m. Let that be the number. They know they're getting there.

You have absolutely NO IDEA about how you'd actually act in real life in that situation, even if you think you'd be doing things Nolan style.

Once you actually find yourself in a situation, that's when the real you comes down. Otherwise it's just online chit-chatter that has no resemblance to real life.
