Superman SPOILER Review Thread (NO TAGS NECESSARY)

Even after Krypto disabled the commands though, Ultraman was overpowering Supes. Also Lex isn't a well-trained fighter either so just some counter moves wouldn't best Supes every time if the power was equal. Ultraman looked stronger throughout.
If you know Michael Jordan will do a fade away jumper every time he pulls the ball to his right you will be able to make the defensive block or at worst throw him off his game. Not that you’re more athletic.

The moment Superman did something Luthor didn’t expect like with the dive bomb from space the Ultraman got hammered.

Yep wouldn't surprise. Or he becomes the Super/Ultra man of another version of Earth.
So just to follow-up, I just watched it for a 5th time, specifically looking for any indication that Ultraman is actually stronger than Supes, and came up empty. The part you're talking about after Krypto took out the cameras was simply Ultraman catching Supes by surprise right after Supes took out all the Raptors, and pinning him to the ground. But Supes was still able to swing him into the bus even with a dislocated shoulder right after that.

And the only time it's even SUGGESTED that Ultraman is stronger is when Luthor is pitching Planet Watch to the DOD, and refers to him as "the most powerful being in the universe," but that's Luthor making a sales pitch, and after all, I'd assume he genuinely believes someone with Superman's strength and his own superior brain behind them IS the most powerful being in the universe.

Ultraman ain't stronger that Supes here, imo. They are equal in that department.

I keep missing it at my viewings of Superman but did Kara call Kal a bi$&&ch (female dog)? The crowd was just to loud at my viewings when she came on the screen.

He did not seem to be overpowering him at all to me at that point, just got a couple of good licks in. Also, Supes tossed Ultraman into the bus with a dislocated shoulder while Ultraman was pinning him down.

It’s unclear here but some versions of Lex are indeed very well-trained fighters because they were trying to make themselves the pinnacle of man. I think it’s safe to say this Lex has studied several martial arts to create his Ultraman fighting regimen at the very least.

There was nothing in the movie to suggest this Lex was well versed in fighting techniques though. He didn't show anything like this.

Also Supes tossing Ultraman into the bus with his dislocated shoulder seemed a desperation move as UM was still getting the better of him. I thought it was quite clear UM was stronger.

Luther states Ultraman is stronger when we find out UM is a clone following the stadium fight. So it's actually said twice in the movie.

There is also the fact that Supes has broken bones and can't even make it to the fortress after their first fight.

Again, that’s because Ultraman gets more good hits in due to Luthor’s fight techniques. NOT superior strength. Supes breaks Ultraman’s arm too. They are both strong enough to break each others’ bones, but Ultraman had the technique advantage until he lost Luthor’s guidance. Then Supes whooped him pretty handily. And once again, we can’t trust what Luthor says when he’s pitching Ultraman’s superiority. It’s pretty clear by what is shown that they are of equal strength.

Does the Hammer of Boravia suit enhance him at all too? It must have had some significant power on its own since Superman can lift buildings so he should have been able to punch through it pretty easily if it was just steel or whatever.

Otis says "he has been studying Superman for years" or something like that when one of the other operators makes a comment about it. It was part of the first fight I believe.

Lex is not a fighting master, he is just a master of the fighting style of one man for this reason.

As a former karate fighter (a very bad one!) there was a couple of people I watched fight (or fought) so many times I knew what they were going to do before they did it. I was so well versed in their style and their moves that I could predict them. That is what is going on here.

And weaker fighters than me strength-wise hurt me all the time.

I never even clocked that but yeah it would have to.

I remember Otis' line but then the start of the movie states Superman had only been active for 3 years. So again that didn't really wash for me.

Weaker fights can certainly hurt you but Superman was beaten to a pulp with broken bones and multiple other injuries.

But there were a number of occasions where UM was holding Superman down and that wouldn't happen with equal strength. Even after UM lost Luthor's guidance Superman made a come back, with the help of weapons, another indicator UM was stronger. Then UM went right back to beating Supes again until Supes dislocated his own shoulder just to beat him.

Did I like this movie?

Did I love this movie?

Oh, so much more! It brought me JOY, it made me happy in a way that I can't quite put to words right now.

It is a filmic thesis / love letter that finally explains why SUPERMAN is ****ing badass!! Why he ROCKS!!!!! And what people who think he's " a boring boyscout" do not understand about him.

What a hero. You're ****ing cool, SUPERMAN!!

Thank you , James Gunn, cast and crew!

I was damned near knocked unconscious by a kid that was a Green belt (I was/am Black) and once he got that shot on me I had a hard time recovering.

Also remember, Superman had never lost a fight until the beginning of the movie. He is still not fully healed and is still a bit on tilt.

Things can always change but in the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn clarifies that the El’s message was indeed real & not doctored, and further shut down speculation that there’s more to unpack in sequels.

Which makes me happy; the less Krypton in sequels, the better.

He didn’t, though. He literally just knocked him out of air and had him pinned for a second. When you pin someone down you automatically have the physical advantage (which was also the case before, btw - and Ultraman again had him pinned via Lex’s tactics previously). But Supes still dislocated his shoulder and tossed him into the bus immediately after that.

P.S.: saw plenty of Morrison's Action Comics in there, too!

For example, Superman 's attitude and him being super proud about having thrown Vasil Ghurkos on a cactus.

But more, as well

Oh I hadn’t thought about Suicide Slum in that scene (assuming you’re talking about when Jimmy met up with Eve) but you’re probably right; good call there.

Many moons ago I was a green belt sparring against my sensei's son, who was a black belt.
He moved wrong and I caught him square in the nose. His eyes rolled up in his head. I caught him before he fell.
I looked nervously at my sensei, expecting to get whipped good, but instead, he just laughed.
He said he shoulda ducked instead of dodged.
He gave me my brown belt right after that lol.
I'm so out of practice now I couldn't kick my own azz.

But you did recover. Superman had to retreat, needed help getting back to the fortress and then needed urgent medical attention due to his injuries. He was quite clearly beaten to a pulp and as his robots said he couldn't take UM at 100%, never mind 83%.

He didn’t, though. He literally just knocked him out of air and had him pinned for a second. But it takes strength to pin someone down. Ever tried pinning someone down stronger than you? It's damn hard to do. If someone is weaker though it's not so bad. And UM did it with ease every time.

Gunn has even said his version of Superman is made a bit weaker than previous ones so the likes of Green Arrow aren't made to look redundant. I guess we will just to agree to disagree on this one guys.

Yeah we will have to agree to disagree because I have watched this thing 5 times and have seen zero evidence of Ultraman genuinely being stronger. And I’m not even against the idea! Let him be stronger for all I care, as I’ve said for years Superman isn’t Superman because he’s the strongest in the room - there’s always gonna be someone stronger. But Ultraman just ain’t that guy imo. He was useless without Lex’s directions outside of the lucky pin he got when Supes was distracted by the Raptors, and that advantage lasted about 10 whole seconds.

And I’d argue from a storytelling perspective, that was the whole point of including the dialogue about how Lex had studied Supes’ fighting style and designed the perfect counter-moves: to explain why Ultraman could beat him. There’s no other reason to write that, honestly.

I mean, Lex's commands being input into a computer by other people faster than Superman can react when he is lightning fast is silly in and of itself.

But yeah agree to disagree as the move showed the opposite in my eyes.

Hey, isn't it just great to have a good new Supes movie to discuss!
