The Marvel brand being damaged is highly exaggerated. While they've had a couple of titles underperform, we're still talking about an overall billion dollar franchise that has dominated the box office for over a decade.

There's obviously more trust and goodwill for a Fantastic Four that looks good coming from Marvel Studios-Disney than yet another Superman reboot from DC.

But that's what we're building towards here. For people to trust the DC brand (again).

4 of the last 6 Marvel films have underperformed including two just this year, that's more than just a blip.

Yeah, audiences will cherrypick what MCU movie they wanna see now because they don't have the hook of having to see everything yet, but when they wanna see something , "Marvel Studios" and the MCU still has a certain seal of trust attached to it WHEN they actually wanna see something.

Really can't compare some movies underperforming to the crap DC and Superman have gone through in the 21st century.

The sentiment is more "I haven't cared much about Marvel lately but F4 looks good" vs "oh, they're making yet another Batman movie / they're making yet another Superman movie"?

Perhaps, but The Batman had the DC brand issues and it had COVID raging worldwide. And F4 is not that popular of a property either. To me, if F4 makes $100 million more than Superman that might lead to some questions.

The Batman was released post COVID. Also, the character has gained huge popularity in both 1989 throughout the 1990s and once again in the 2000s.

Superman hasn't had a truly audience pleasing, successful and popular theatrical stint since 1980, and there have been a lot of misconceptions about the character which took until Superman '25 to solve for a large moviegoing audience.

Fantastic Four , on the other side , is still a Fantastic Four movie made by Marvel Studios. The most prolific brand of the 21st century.

So no, the people at Warner Bros. and DC should not have to question anything based on this. They just need to do their thing, now that they have a hit on their hands that's well received by the audience.

The strong holds and performance past the first weekend are an indication of this.

Not to acknowledge this is honestly insincere.

The COVID variants were going wild, half of China was closed when The Batman released. In any case, we shall see what happens and it will be interesting where both films wind up.

Spider-Man No Way Home was released in December 2021. It's fair to say that by the time The Batman was released, businesses and theaters were fairly back to normal.

Also, China isn't what it once was for Hollywood movies , except for a handful of specific titles that catch their eye.

Also, The Batman was a hit, so why are we trying to justify its performance here?

Superman , like the Matt Reeves movie, is defying its odds in a very similar fashion , without the extra boost of Batman's popularity (due to a greater presence over the last generations as a movie icon).

Superman I & II are truly old school, there is zero nostalgia for Superman Returns and fans of Snyder's Superman are definitely not interested in this one, for the most part.

F4 has done gangbusters here in Italy, yet Superman has held onto significantly more than 50% yesterday despite that.

There was a bit more inital uncertainty about whether a new Superman movie can be good and is worth watching, which is what this movie is steering around.

Like Batman Begins after Batman & Robin. Or like Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse, which wasn't exactly a huge hit, but paved way for a huge sequel.

P.S.: as for the Fantastic Four's popularity, it was just yesterday that I posted this...
Here is one of superhero "reboots" or "resets" at the Italian box office:

Don't know why Fantastic Four 2005 is included, they likely counted the 1990s Roger Corman production even though it never got an official release.

Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie was the 3rd most successful movie of the 1978/79 season in Italy.
...where the 2005 movie made €9M in Italy vs Batman Begins' €6.9M.

Rise of the Silver Surfer then went on to make €6.9 vs The Dark Knight's €9.5M.

Now imagine if Warner Bros. had gotten cold feet after Batman Begins' theatrical run.....

The movie has done a good job putting as much money in the bank before F4 arrived. It's not an exact apples to apples comparison but Jurassic World has held it's own despite having Superman over it's shoulder and no Imax screens. It's up to Superman to do the same.

In my opinion, most ( but not all ) people will still see both because both are good films.

This reminds me of when Spiderman 3, potc 3, and Shrek 3 all came out within two weeks of each other.
All 3 films did well. I know this is a different time, but still.
F4 looks to open at 125 mill and will prolly go on to make.north of 300 mill also.
My wife and I.plan on seeing F4 next week, and we will follow that up by watching superman for a 3rd time.

I believe F4 will open much higher than that, but having seen the film, I don’t believe it will have Superman’s legs. The entertainment/rewatchability factor isn’t nearly as high imo. I can’t see people wanting to go back over and over again for that one. The humor and action aren’t there.

I have not seen it but, what I know of the story, I agree, 100!

I hope Gunn keeps the pedal to the metal and gives us more bones to chew on, keeps the momentum rolling, and tells us the sequel plans sooner than later. I know Peacemaker Season 2 will more than likely take care of that, but givin' the legs Superman is crushing right now, why not feed our selfishness :legacy:

Wonder Woman and Teen Titans are getting there and we have Lanterns and Supergirl.

Italy | THU July 24th:

1. The Fantastic Four: First Steps | €520,913 | Tot. €1,452,073
2. Superman | €76,892 | Tot. €4,176,586

€5M is definitely doable. Should end the weekend at around €4.4M.

Been keeping an eye on seats sold on fandango when I can... today, from what I noticed, most Superman showtimes were in the least 60% full, and some 80-90%

(Specifically for my area, obviously.)

Curious to see the numbers for today!
