Talk Show and OTHER interviews DISCUSSION

Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters are ALL family comedy. So let her be.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

Indiana Jones- with people being impaled, beheaded and melted is family comedy?

Ghostbusters IS a comedy, starring and written by comedians.

And Back to the Future doesn't feature the likes of Galactus or Dr. Doom.

Were Star Wars also family comedies?

Maybe not so much Star Wars, but there is a difference. FF isn't an epic. It's a farce. Gradiose maybe, but a comedy. Star Wars is prolly more of a tragedy.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

You didn't say that. FF not an epic? Under Stan and Jack it was easily as epic as Star Wars. FF travelled to distant worlds- faced beings with Godlike power- fought not only villains but whole Civilizations (Moleman's subterranean world, Atlantis, Planet X, Latveria, the Skrullian Empire, The Kree, The Inhumans, etc. ).

Certain short-sighted individuals might only SEE a family comedy. But the FF are far more than that.

It's, as I said- in fact BOTH. You can have the best of both worlds, you know?

It's epic in all of this great science fiction elements that work their way in.

And it's a great family comedy as well, because you're dealing with this dysfunctional family- which always makes for great comedy. Similar to how it did in the comics.

So, you actually have both. It just has to be weighted on an equal scale to perfectly work like the comics- and I think they may have pulled that off this time around.

When questioned at the MTV Movie Awards red carpet which film would do better at the summer box office (FF:ROTSS or Transformers), Jessica Alba simply answered:

"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is going to be the best family comedy of the summer"

Hmmmm.......family comedy? I was more in the mood for an epic comicbook action film. :o

Yes, and because she said that the movie is going to AUTOMATICALLY become less action, less epic, and less comicbook.......:whatever:

I think she was simply being diplomatic, and not saying something that would make all you fanboys go trolling on each others boards.....:woot:

Oh yeah- that worked...

The comics weren't comedies. Only someone who didn't read them would say that. They had moments of comic relief, just the way, again Star Wars does. But there was as in fact more drama in the comics than comedy. Malus needs to post the pages to the arcs this movie was based on FFs 48-50 & 57-60. Anyone reading those won't come away saying the FF were comedic.

She's correct in her statements. Just because a film has a healthy dose of lighthearted comedy doesn't mean it ca't have the darker, epic dynamic also. An amalgamazation of the two extremes is appropriate for an FF film's true spirit.

Hell, I even consider SM3 to be a family comedy too...so?

It's safe to say it won't be the best anything of the summer, I think.

Family comedy?

Yeah parents bring your screaming-ass babies to it. After all, it is Disney.:o

Let's hope it's more action with some good (more hidden adult jokes) comedy.

Having those elements, by its nature makes it not a comedy. Silence of the Lambs has funny moments. Is that a summer family comedy?

Sure, some people consider Spidey 3 a comedy ( including those who think the comedy unintentional..). But that doesn't mean that's what the filmmakers were going for.

And yes, I'm sure Jessica is accurate, in that the movie SHE SHOT is a comedy. But that doesn't mean they were true to the spirit of the book. Not even close.

Like any complex recipe, the "spirit" of the FF books contain many ingredients. Are you saying that comedy is not one of the major ingredients Dragon?

You're saying the "spirit" of the FF books do not contain the elements of comedy Dragon?

Of course not. They have great elements of comedy. But having comedy isn't BEING a comedy. And what they've shown of this film is that they're over-emphasizing the comedy element.

Highlights from the original Silver Surfer/Galactus saga start tomorrow morning

Having just re-read FF #48 today, I have to agree there's not very many chuckles to be
found in the first chapter of the trilogy.
Considerably fewer than in previous issues, I thought.

She was just speaking offhand, so I don't think anybody should put too much stock into her comments. But in all honestly, "family comedy" seems to fit this franchise better than "epic action film" anyway.

What did you want her to say at what amounted to the "Transformers Promo Special" masquerading as the MTV movie awards? If she'd have said anything different, I think she would've been stoned by toy robots. Most everything from the red carpet coverage through the show itself was about promoting Transformers. I can't believe MTV had the stones to hand out "The Best Movie You Haven't Seen Yet" award to Transformers (their main sponsor).

What boarders on the pathetic is that every "exclusive" clip they showed looked pretty bad. Unless the CGI plays much better on the big screen, Transformers looks to be cartoonish nonsense that doesn't sit well in the mind's eye. They should've kept more a secret. I was looking forward to Transformers more BEFORE I saw those clips. The more they show, the worse it's getting for them.

Thats what i said it was a TF's special.

But i'm looking forward to it though.

And um, what were your thoughts on her comments? I think thats what the thread is about, actually....your thoughts on the Transformers might be better suited for THEIR forum...

I would actually put more of an emphasis on the "family" part of her statement, rather than the "comedy" part of her statement...

But then of course, not much negative could be pulled out of that for a thread.....

No, that would just cause unnecessary animosity between the fans. I hope they enjoy Transformers. The reason I mention it was to put Jessica's blanket statement in to context and touch on the pressure the cast faced promoting FF in what was clearly hostile territory. Transformers is also somewhat of a box office rival for FF. When Bay and company solidified July 4th and practically mocked FF2, they said the more images released the more Transformers would overwhelm FF. Now that some of those images have been released, I just don't see it. That's certainly pertinent to these FF boards. It worth bringing up quietly among the FF crowd here in order to avoid an all out asinine flame war. I remember the Batman/FF sniping that went on in 2005 and I don't want to be the cause of anything like that occurring.

Well I think you could have put her comments "into context" which has already been done pretty well already just fine without totally bashing another movie in order to do it....I saw ALOT of bashing a movie, and very little of what the thread is actually about.....and yes that would bring undue animosity and flaming on the Transformers board, just as it can do the same here.....there are actually quite a few fans of both around here.....I don't happen to be one of them.....but we have quite a few on this board.

The Divine Comedy is an epic. Maybe I mispoke before, but the FF is a Comedy. It's pessimistic. It pokes fun at the foibles. And nothing could be darker than that.

Yes the Galactus Trilogy is serious, but you're not giiving true comedy it's due.

Bottom line is they didn't all die in the end.

Comedy.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

Also, this isn't a fullout adaptation of those specific issues....it is taking from the F4 as a whole as well.....so why would there not be comedy???? and again.....

There was another word along with that little statement.....called family....

I think what Jessica was trying to do was tell he audience what the Fantastic Four movie WAS, that was DIFFERENT from the Transformer movie....they are both action, but the F4 has more humor and family aspects to it than Bay's Transformers.....and I think thats the quick point she was trying to make in the 3 seconds they gave her to plug the movie STANDING in front of a Transformer car.......

Come on guys, it doesn't take alot of brains for people to see that F4 has an immense amount of action in it.....and the planet dieing in 8 days....doesn't sound too comical either......

BUT F4 IS DIFFERENT FROM TRANSFORMERS.....and I think she did a good 3 second job of telling the viewers that......

Yes i thought she did a excellent job in the few seconds they gave her to plug FF2.

I can't believe how much TV time they gave Transformers than FF2.
