would be hilarious if he spoke american english but went full british during spell casting :funny:

I remember Gary Oldman did that in this really terrible horror movie called The Unborn. It was hilarious. He just turns British at the end when he's reading from a spell book.

Johnny Depp went from British to Scottish in Alice when he gets pissed off, for some reason
thought that was weird but kind of fun, Scottish is definitely rougher sounding than British

If he is American, it should definitely be the most proper and educated accent possible

Maybe they should bring back the Transatlantic Accent so he can sound like he's from a 1940s film (or is FDR).

I was actually just thinking that. It would be perfect. Probably easier for Cumberbatch to pull off well without losing the depth in his voice and it would fit the character perfectly. As an "American" accent, it would satisfy the purists.

yeah that could work I suppose, kind of similar to how I'd always pictured his voice anyway, like this guy:

And it may have been something Steven Strange could have spoken in the 1960s. Now it'll seem completely archaic, though.

Given that nobody here has been able to cite to an issue that says he's American (and the sources they do cite suggest this was something established 30 years after his creation), I still don't see the big deal.

I'd love the authenticity of him just being an American, and born/raised in Nebraska but with a british accent just doesn't make real sense. There's no logical reason Marvel's Stephen Strange shouldn't have an American accent, and I'm sure BC would pull it off as well as any British actor could.

But holy Christ does his voice sound awesome in his native accent. His dramatic scenes, in his own accent, actually make me question what the limits of acting are on people's emotions.

It would be more authentic for him to be American. It's definitely what he SHOULD be. Dr Strange is an American, born and raised.

But I think it may be better for the character and his impact on the audience for him to be British. BC's voice connects people to him and to the scene on a deeper level than most any actor I can think of.

I'll be perfectly happy if he does the movie in American accent, but can't help but feel like I'll be wondering the whole time how much better the dialogue would be were he to speak with a brit one.

Let me ask this again, has anyone ever read a comic where Dr. Strange said he was from Nebraska? And, fwiw, he wasn't actually born and raised in Nebraska, he was born in Philly and raised in Nebraska.

Yeah, Strange's birthplace/hometown is literally inconsequential to the rest of his story

If he was from anywhere else, would it have a single impact on anything?? it really wouldn't

he's not Panther, Cap, or Thor where their home is so important to the character it can't be changed

I'd be happy it if they let Benedict keep his natural accent (because I really really like his voice with his accent - plus as others have said - it might come across better when saying spells and what not).

However, if they opt to have him do an American accent, I can live with it. I doubt it will ruin the movie for me.

Strange is not British, he's American all the way and should remain as such. AMERICAN ACCENT!

I can't recall if I specifically asked you before, but I'll ask it now. Do you recall which comic revealed that he was American?

In the end... No ne is gonna care if he speaks with his natural accent though. And... It's never been important to the character and his stories what his country of origin is.

I would prefer really well spoken American. Some posh Americans damn near sound English anyway.

British is preferred for me, adds a little more variety to the heroes' backgrounds, making the world feel just a tad bigger, plus I always read him that way anyways.

That's actually a good point. If he was an American that got his medical training in the UK that could work. Much like Tim Roth's Emil Blonsky Russian/English heritage in The Hulk.

Well, I for one am shocked that they went with an American doctor strange!

I think my concern remains the same after hearing him in the trailer. He does a fine job, but he sounds nowhere near as cool as he does with his normal accent (in fact, since, aside from the end, he's speaking off screen, it didn't even register that it was him speaking at first).

I had hoped BC would have retained his original voice for this, but that he hasn't is not a big deal for me. If Strange is in part meant to fulfill the role of kind of the arrogant prodigy of the MCU after RDJ leaves, much better to do that in his American accent then. :woot:

Strange isnt British like Iron Fist isnt Asian. Thats the way it is.

damn, bummed
just hoping his American doesn't break and pull me out of the film

Why should Cumberbatch have retained his British accent if the character's American?

because being American is in no way important to the character
and because Brit's aren't always as good at American accents as they think they are
and because Cumberbatch has such a cool natural voice

I meant bc doesn't do a impressive American accent .he still sounded british there.

Personally I didn't think he spoke enough in the teaser to really judge if he should've stuck with his Brit accent or not. I did lol when someone on Twitter commented he sounds like Hans Gruber faking an American accent, especially since Cumberbatch has done Rickman impressions in the past.
