How about this everybody, LET STRANGE REMAIN AMERICAN. If you guys want a Brit because the accent sounds more sophisticated then write to Marvel and tell them to do a Captain Britain movie. Why would they need to set Strange apart from Tony Stark? That's silly, no one is gonna confuse the two trust me. This is why i was against casting Cumberbatch because I knew the whiners would start this make Strange british crap. Not because a British accent sounds cooler because it doesn't to me but it's more because some of you like Cumberbatch's voice and how awesome he sounds and blah, blah, blah. Nah I'll pass on Strange sounding like Smaug. An actor is supposed to fit the role and not the other way around. MARVEL PLEASE MAINTAIN STRANGE'S AMERICAN ACCENT!

JUST FOR THE RECORD STRANGE IS FROM PHILLY AND NOT NEW YORK. Read his history. Yes he lives in NYC or is stationed there but he was born in Philly and also grew up in Nebraska. I don't know what screams he needs to made British based off this background.

Well, I don't trust anyone to do a good Philly accent in a movie (the only person not from there to pull it off, imo, was Toni Collette in The Sixth Sense). Then again, I've never heard a voice actor portray Peter Parker like he's from Queens, so I guess it doesn't matter much.

Now that's an interesting thought. How come nobody is asking whether Peter Parker should have a New York accent?

But i say lets let cumby use his real accent, it just feels right somehow. Don't really care if strange is from Philly or New york or England or whatever. The GA doesn't know he isn't british so they likely won't complain. And by the looks of how this thread is going most people who have posted don't really care.

I prefer it when actors fit themselves into a role rather than moulding the role to fit the actor, so Benedict should use an American accent like Dr. Strange is supposed to have.

I agree. I wouldn't be upset if they let him use his natural accent, but I'd prefer it if he uses an American one.

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other, TBH, but I voted American because comic-accurate is just my default. I wouldn't mind terribly if they strayed from that, though.

Patrick Stewart plays Professor X as British/uses his natural accent (Xavier is American in the comics). And it has precisely ZERO affect on the quality of the character, and no one cares. Cumberbatch using his own accent would be the same way. I'd prefer that he do that then try and mask it and slip. For example, as much as I love Michael Fassbender's Magneto in FC, his accent slips and Magneto starts to sound suspiciously Irish towards the end of the movie.

Thank You! Someone here with a sense of what acting should be and the reason it's called acting. Molding a character to fit the actor cheapens both the character and the source material. It's something that Hollywood does way too much and while i can name a few alisters this is done for none comes to mind more then Will Smith.

Fox has sadly taken one of the most iconic characters in comics and molded the character to fit the actor. Yeah Fox this is what you guys did to Storm. Molding Storm to fit Berry is terriable and it was taken further by casting Shipp to fit Berry. I can go on but it's important that Strange be the character he was written as and not changed to fit Cumberbatch's personality.

A lot of guys here gush over Cumberbatch like he's the second coming. All i read is how great he is and awesome and talented and so on. Well if this is the case how most feel about the man then you supporters are doing the man's talent a diservice if Strange is adapted to make it easier for Cumberbatch to portray. The man is a talented actor and i like him and he's a good fit for Strange but he is a darn good actor so i want him to act and it shouldn't be a problem considering his talent to do an american accent.

See, you bring up Storm but don't mention Charles Xavier. Professor X was changed from an American to a British person because he didn't change his accent (molding Professor X to fit Patrick Stewart) and they took it further by casting McAvoy to fit Stewart. Was that a mistake?

Either way I am happy. His english accent is gorgeous and rich, so, good. He is an excellent actor, so his American accent should be fine, his wonderful voice will have different tones for sure, but it would be more authentic. They can also choose a more posh American accent if they choose.

Strange was born in Philadelphia, raised in Nebraska, but then traveled rareified circles as a rich surgeon, who knows what accent he cultivated to gain clients. He then travels the world seeking a cure after his accident, and spent significant time in Asia. Again, we pick up what we hear, who knows how his accent might have changed. I don't find it unacceptable any more posh accent they choose to use, because I find that authentic to the character.

How am I missing the point? So you love his accent, that still doesn't mean Strange should be adapted to be British now. He's American and should stay American. Let Cumberbatch do an American accent. No point in a long post but you are correct about Xavier and i complained about him too. Making him A Brit for some reason was Singer's doing. McKellen does an american accent for Magneto just fine even though the character isn't American. Now that's just weird. Magneto has an American accent and he's not one but Xavier is but was made British? Go figure

Yes, I used my example because I had a brother who lived in England for a few years, came back saying Lorry and accented his words in a similar manner. After being back in the states, he lost that, but it took several years.

British is preferred for me, adds a little more variety to the heroes' backgrounds, making the world feel just a tad bigger, plus I always read him that way anyways.
