Wouldn't the same hold true for their vision as well as their hearing? That they are used to low light levels and can see in the dark and murk better than we can?
Also I thought when they first announced it that talking underwater would be a problem. And I thought their telepathic abilities would be a way around that. But it seems that isn't the way Wan wanted to do it. Either way it works unless someone is just looking for a nit to pick.

Probably.

So I have a legitimate question for Aquaman since they're partnering up with Ocean awareness groups....

Are you allowed to use straws for your drinks during Aquaman showings?

I'm not too familiar with the comics, so i couldn't judge on the authenticity of atlantis on screen. However, some scenes looked like a dry sound stage with cgi wavy hair - there was one scene were we see the army and we see corn rows and that's cool but then it cuts to some dude with short fluffy hair.

I would have compromised and have atlantis be housed in large glass like domes, dry under neath, perhaps with waterfalls and vegetation etc and also caves, large caverns that have cities inside and their own eco systems, which we know exist. I then would have had scenes of them in the water and made it look as realistic - they communicate through clicks - similar to dolphins and also sign language but they have evolved to use gills and breathe under water and withstand the pressure, temp and low light. I would have also had large strategically placed gold orbs or a thousand pearls together to form one giant pearl which the sun light hit and it casts a spectrum of light across the city giving it colour.

Under water volcano's, the lava leave tubes and air vents to the world above, i would have incorporated that.

Thing is, when you connect this trailer to the world of MOS and BvS you kinda think.... hmmmmm ok - it's too fantastical too soon for my own preferences - however, Mamoa looks awesome and he looks like he is enjoying it and feels so comfortable in it, which is great.

There's also an island protected by a magical force field inhabited by Amazons so... I don't see the issue.

MOS had a totally human looking alien that flies. BvS had a billionaire genius create a hybrid monster from a space ship. It's all still happening in a fantasy world after all.

Thought the trailer was decent, CGI in some places was a little iffy & I'm not too sure how I feel about the talking in the open water.. I mean I knew this was going to come up but I hope they add some sort of effect over the voices that then disappears when they're on the surface.. and no not a bubble, gargling or muffled type effect just make it less clear.

Cheers.. just made me spit out some of my tea with that comment. :argh: :woot:

I like Ocean Master and I always put him in that category of "double arch nemesis". By that I mean there are always those villains that are undeniably the hero's number one, which most people in the mass audience identify as the most "classic" enemy. But as a comic fan I can also name another enemy that on paper should be just as big if not bigger and they are often not as well known to the wider public, though thanks to the flood of adaptations that's changing.

It's like with the DC Trinity. Superman has Lex and he deserves his place but you have Brainiac and again, on paper he is the more formidable villain. Batman is always challenged by the Joker's madness and he schemes to terrorize Gotham... But he isn't a near immortal mastermind with a thousands of years old secret society backing him up with resources that rival even Bruce Wayne's billions of dollars with the added bonus of a personal connection to Batman through a daughter that's had his child. Ra's Al Ghul has all that going for him. Cheetah in various incarnations has an iconic look and always threatens Wonder Woman with her cold rage and savagery but compare that to Circe, a sorceress from the days of Ancient Greece able to call upon her own vast mystical power and knowledge as well as various magical talismans and objects.

Arthur is no different. We all know Black Manta thanks to the Superfriends and his imagery is iconic with the Vader voice and menacing costume. But Orm is no slouch and he's got the sibling rivalry thing as well as often having a legit claim to being the leader of Atlantis.

That all out there, while I am happy to see Ocean Master getting more recognition I REALLY hope that Manta is allowed to stick around and comes back for a sequel if we get one. Orm to me is important to Aquaman's origin but the constant threat to Aquaman's life and very happiness has always been Manta.
I'm actually holding out hope that both Orm and Manta survive the film, with Arthur proving himself capable of subduing his brother in a way that leaves Orm in a complex position as an antagonist/ally if he ever show up again, while Black Manta clearly begins a full-on feud with Arthur.

The handy thing about the differences between modern Orm and Manta is that Orm can be your classical philosophical villain who exchanges speeches and dialogue with the hero, while Manta can, if need be, be as simply spiteful as "see Aquaman, hurt Aquaman." Like, if you write both characters well, than Orm can be the one who might actually be the greater large scale threat, while Manta can be the viciously personal one.

Except lip reading shows otherwise.
Same for Kryptonian, the lip reading shows they are speaking English, it's understood convention by now that film-makers are doing this for the benefit of general audience or else they could have done what Harry Potter Films did when Harry was speaking in Parseltongue.

But imagine if the movie is set underwater for two-thirds of runtime and they are speaking in an unknown language and you have to read all those sub-titles.

Here's MCU equivalent, why do Rocket and Gamora speak in English when they are talking to each other, neither are connected to Earth. Or in this clip, why 'The Other' is talking to Thanos in English ? We can hear him in English and we can see by lip movements that he is speaking in English.

Don't connect it then. This is the DCEU as it should be. Enough easing into s**t. Also MOS had Krypton.

And I'm not watching an Aquaman movie where the characters click like dolphins. I think you're sweating the details a bit much. I just see it like this.

When we are in an underwater scene, we the audience perceive the world as an Atlantean would. That includes being able to see perfectly in the dark, hear speech etc. etc.
When we the audience are viewing a scene on the surface we perceive it as humans do.

I think Wan nailed it.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to see a movie the way some people imagine it should be. Their ideas would look worse and less believable. It's like they think if you go underwater, you have all these magic effects lol.

Atlanteans have denser bodies and materials. They would move the same in water as humans move in air. They adapted to the deep sea. That's like the whole point.

lol he wants them to speak in dolphin clicks. WOW

Not only would that look weird as hell, dolphins do that for echolocation and long distance. That would make no sense for Atlanteans who speak close to each other like humans.

... you’re allowed to do whatever you want. You think the WB gestapo are gonna come into your house at night or something? Now... if this were actually a legitimate question... then yes... I’m sure it’d be a nice gesture to not use a plastic straw during the movie... or here on out. If helping our oceans and our pollution problem is important to you, than avoiding excessive plastic can’t hurt.

Why do I suspect this was a dig more than a legitimate question though?

Do you know da wae to Atlandaes?

Killer James Wan interview. And he gives us a few spoilers.

The inspiration for Atlantis

James Wan: We did so much research of underwater plants, and marine life, and when you're so deep down, I realized that the sun doesn't penetrate. The sun only penetrates the surface level up to certain feet, and after that it gets really dark.

Atlantis is so deep down into the earth's floor, and that's how they have managed to stay hidden all these years. Their whole thing is just not wanting to be seen by the surface world. They have their own technology, so bioluminescence plays a big part in this world. They have their own light source down there.

Someone wants "gold orbs or a thousand pearls together to form one giant pearl which the sun light hit and it casts a spectrum of light across the city giving it colour." which makes no sense

instead of bioluminescence which is real and looks cool. It's really hard to take people's complaints seriously when they think in such.... unusual ways. Somehow they think they movie is wrong and not them.

It’s incredible isn’t it? :funny:

Sound under-water is a complex subject, the range of frequencies that can be used for communication and sound Intensity (measured in decibels) varies due to several factors such as water salinity, water temperature and pressure.

Which is why Whales communicate at different vocal frequencies from Dolphins as they live at different depths.

Suffice to say, we don't want to go into such details for Aquaman movie.

Haha yeah I read that.

"James Wan and the entire crew and their research are wrong and I am right."

Is that even how pearls and sunlight and underwater work? And even then The pearl would have to be close enough to the surface to catch that sunlight, so close that humans would've discovered it a looong time ago. And how big would this Pearl Sun need to be to illuminate all the seven seas? Or would there be seven pearly suns?

Silly.
