From what I have read sandman was only mentioned once, and that was by u Andy C. as Spider-man. He didn't even have powers. So I don't think it would be too much of a problem if I took over him with this idea.
If he had developed powers though, could someone please send me a link to that post?
Character you would like to play: Sandman, calls himself Flint Marko, real name Floyd Baker.
Powers: Instead of being composed of Radioactively charged sand, 'Marko' is composed entirely of silicon based nanobots, that can conform to whatever shape he desires, allowing him to change both his density to become either as hard as granite or as flexible as sand. He can also form his hands into various shapes, from clubs to sledgehammers. He is not vulnerable to water like the 616 version, but is vulnerable to high voltage electricity, which can disrupt his control of the nanobots. The nanobots also can integrate with machinery, burrowing into the machinery and sampling the machinery while breaking it down. Another interesting ability is how the nanobots can change appearance to resemble different human beings, by refracting light into different colors. The nanobots can also store terabytes of information, which ‘Marko’ can access at will, giving him practically eidetic memory.
This Marko also has a genius IQ and a PhD in robotics and specializes in nanotechnology, so when he enters technology he often knows the best way of breaking down essential parts of the machine, and also recording some parts of the machine, getting a better idea how it works. He has spent years travelling around the world selling hi-tech to foreign nations, so knows Korean, Russian and Mandarin Chinese, while knowing a bit of German.
Basic history of the character (Up until this point): Floyd Baker grew up son of a Russian soldier who had sought asylum in the United States in 1945, Floyd was born in 1946 to an American mother, but in 1955 at the age of 9 saw his father deported back to Russia for suspected (unfounded) espionage to the Soviet Union. No one thought how hard it would be for a butcher in Hell’s Kitchen to be a spy. Floyd and his mother changed their names to avoid being deported as well by seeming more American, but inside Floyd burned with hatred for the government that would do such a thing, while desiring to become incredibly wealthy as well, almost to prove to himself that he was a true capitalist.
He excelled in science and got a scholarship to Yale University, and got a PhD in robotics. He began working for Stark Industries and helped with various projects till 1980, the year his son Flint was born, when he disappeared from his lab with a note: ‘I'm sorry Howard.’ It was then learnt that Floyd had stolen thousands of dollars worth of research (thankfully not the iron men program but plenty to worry about) and for the next 20 years he became one of the most wanted scientists in America. Strange to say though it wasn’t his fault.
He had been contacted by a man named Piotr Phobos, a member of the KGB who said he held Floyd’s father hostage and would kill him (‘painfully’ he stated) unless Floyd handed over all the technology in the projects he had been working on. Floyd didn’t trust the government for aid, and so took his work and travelled to the USSR to rescue his father. But then he discovered his father had died years ago in prison and Piotr planned to kill him as well. By chance and a prototype transport footwear that resembled stilts (Reference here for those who spot it), he escaped.
Except now his name was tarnished and he knew he couldn’t return to America legally, he would be arrested or shot on sight. So he entered the criminal underworld, acquired a fake name and identification and sold tech to all manner of foreign nations. But even though he would never tell a soul, he kept a close watch on his son Flint and with tears watched him become a hired thug, even adopting the name Marko when his mother died.
Recently Floyd’s had been working on a new piece of technology, silicon based nanobots that could be controlled mentally from afar and assume various forms. He perceived it as the perfect autonomous soldiers, able to challenge super humans and still have a human’s ability to adapt to situations rather than rely on an automated response. HYDRA had paid him huge amounts for this, but before he could sell it, he found out his son had been sent to Ryker's Island. The big man had refused to bail him out again, despite Floyd’s sending him money and tech just for that reason.
So Floyd did what any loving father would do, and telepathically used the nanobots to break his son out of Rykers, and took him to his lab. Floyd told his son everything, and Flint stared with shock at his father, before falling to his knees at his father. Floyd moved to hold his son who he thought was crying, before he realized he had fallen due to the bullet shot at his back.
HYDRA’s agents had arrived early to ‘haggle’ the price down. They had shot Marko by mistake because he was covering his father from the shot. The agents then shot him as well, in the skull. But instead of darkness Floyd Baker awoke again, and realized he was controlling the nanobots.
He had become the nanobots, his telepathic brainwaves were stuck in the nanobots. Needless to say he used his new abilities to kill the agents painfully, before going to see his son and his own dead body lying side by side. He then downloaded all the information in the lab’s computers into his new body, and destroyed the lab.
Floyd Baker-or Flint Marko as he calls himself, having adopted both his son’s name and appearance to honor him and to prevent all Floyd’s old underground contacts from finding him, has only two things on his mind. Survival and avenging his son’s death by taking it out on the people responsible: HYDRA for killing him, the Big Man for not keeping him out of jail and Spider-man for putting him in there the first place.
Why Have You Chosen That Character?: I am interested in this opportunity to adopt an old character and take him in a brand new direction, and Sandman’s abilities have always struck me as very cool and flexible. Sandman has also been one of my favorite spider-man villains but I never liked the stories where he is simply a thug. He can be more than that, and this is a good chance to show it.
What Do You Plan On Doing With This Character (IE: How are you changing him or her?):
I’ve actually made Sandman the father of Marko Flint who has taken the identity of his deceased son. Instead of being a simple thug who sought money/revenge on spider-man with the occasional acts of good behavior, I’ve made him a man who seeks revenge for the death of his son, feeling with his new great power comes a great responsibility to do what he sees as the right thing to do. This makes him a contrast with Spider-man; both are scientists with great power who try to do the right thing, but Spider-man is much younger and also much more optimistic. Sandman is a look at what Spider-man could have become if he was more cynical about the world.

Please provide a small sample post in the format you wish to portray your character in (Minimum three paragraphs/one line of dialogue, maximum six paragraphs):
Floyd looked at his son, standing 6ft 4 to Floyd’s feeble 5ft 10, with a slow look of realization growing on the boy…
sorry man. He is no longer a child. Floyd reminded himself.
I missed that chance. But he shook that thought from his head, and reached for his son, to finally bond with his only child. Then he saw his son kneel on the floor.
“Son, there’s no need for that, don’t…” He grabbed his son’s back to straighten him, before feeling a hole on his back. “What is this…blood?” Floyd looked up and saw in horror to men adorned in green body armor with the symbol of a snake on their chest, each wielding a large rifle. “No…” Floyd whispered before the second bullet went through his head.
In the darkness he felt disconnected, floating. He felt like he was shattered into thousands of pieces.
Is this hell or heaven? He asked no one. But he could still hear sounds, but they were disjointed and confused, so he tried to bring the sounds together. He felt himself reform slowly and the darkness left. He saw his son on the floor in pain, and he saw his body slumped on the floor, a bullet through the headband he wore that controlled the nanobots. He hadn’t taken it off when his son had arrived.
Nanobots! That was it! He was still transmitting when he died, so his brainwaves must have been trapped in the…he tried to look down but it felt so hard. He didn’t know what he was looking at.
Am I a man? Am I artificial intelligence? Am I something more?
He then heard the sound of papers being tossed around, and swiveled his new eyes and saw the agents, desecrating his lab. And Floyd knew what he could do. He arose from the ground, a being formed of the scattered nanobots, he soon towered above the two agents of HYDRA. They turned to look at him and started firing at him, but the bullets just went through his sand like body. He then grabbed one of them with an enlarged hand, and slammed him into the wall repeatedly, before hearing a crunch. When the other tried to escape his other hand became a mace and broke him into pieces. Floyd smiled to himself, before he heard his son moan softly.
“Son, son I’m here.” He held his son softly. “Don’t worry boy, I’m here for you.” “Dad, I’m tired.” Marko whispered. “Can you stop the pain?” Floyd smiled. “Yes son. I’ll help you go to sleep and then there won’t be any pain.” Marko smiled. “Like the Sandman. Heh. My dad’s the sandman you know.” Before Marko head fell to the side. And Floyd knelt there with his head against his son’s, his pain hardening into anger. And with anger came a need for revenge.
The Sandman’s gonna put all of them bastards to sleep.
