The All Things Flash Thread. - Part 2

Yikes. I must have missed this shot in the trailer, but that is ROUGH.

not to defend their bad behaviour, but it seems like stuff like that happens a LOT in the industry, so that would hardly be a reason to axe them pre-all the other stuff. We hear so many stories about actors being a-holes on set. It’s extremely rude and entitled behaviour, but I guess it unfortunately comes with the territory.

I do think they did a lot of bad stuff, but it really sounds like they were spiralling and have some severe mental health issues. Hope they are really getting help and can come out the other side a bit better. It’s not excusing what they did, but it’s clear they are not (or were not) mentally well at that time.

Now someone like Armie Hammer? That is just a truly horrific person. That is someone I think is totally in control and is just a true POS that is irredeemable.

I do think it would have been unfair to everyone else involved to cancel this film because of what the lead did in their personal life, especially after the fact.
It’s an unfortunate situation, but there’s really not much else they could have done. I do think they should be recast, regardless of how this film is received.

True, being an A-hole on the set doesn’t always get someone fired but the combo of being an A-hole and choking a woman out in public should have been enough to get Miller axed. As for whether they are a terrible person or not… when you read through the list of **** they did over a 2-3 year period, I find it a little hard to blame it all on their mental health deteriorating. While I’m sure that contributed to a lot of it, we’re also talking about someone who committed or threatened violence against multiple women and frequently put children in danger (and possibly much worse). I’m less concerned about Ezra getting help than I am about the people they victimized.

Lastly - and I don’t mean to call you out on this because I’ve heard many other people make this argument - saying that the studio had no choice but to release the movie because so many other people worked on it would have a lot more weight to it if this wasn’t also the same studio that just completely canceled a movie for a tax write-off and then did a whole smear campaign claiming it was so bad it would have ruined the entire DC brand.

Oh stop, there were rumors of the film being bad long before there was talk of them axing it. It was definitely discussed around here how screenings didn't go great (it may not have been screenings but someone who saw it was talking) and word was the film was cheap and not highly regarded. They may have hyperbolized it after the fact because of the bad press but the film was an HBO Max film and from the sounds of it the previous regime really dropped the ball with it.

I still don't think it was the right decision mind you (well I can defend it from an accountants POV) but since they weren't going to make any money off it anyways (I doubt subs go up because people are clamoring to see Batgirl) axing it was a viable option. They could not sell it off like they did the IPs that no one cared about so they chose the tax writeoff. A $2 billion hole will do that...

Cancelling The Flash was not an option. It was wishful thinking at best when the press was bad. Even if the film hadn't been a money pit the fact is what Miller has been accused of (which we all believe mind you) and what they have been convicted of are two different things. What seems like the right decision to us is just not the same as what is the right decision for a corporate owned studio. And lets be 100% honest here, most people do not care. They just don't. We do but we are the vast minority. And I am not just talking about Ezra (a story that I never hear about outside of this website or the trades btw) but everywhere. People will ignore violent, dangerous and downright evil behavior if it gets them what they want. The NFL is BY FAR the most watched thing in the US. (check the top 100 most watched TV shows and 70-80% will be NFL games) How many teams have players that beat their wives, beat their kids, attack fans, are irresponsible with guns and drugs and alcohol...hell even kill people? What happens when those players come out for the game? They are cheered and beloved. (some even make the HOF) The league has teams that have, FOR DECADES, been factories for rape, sexual harassment, exploitation and full on discrimination and covered it up until they are caught red handed...then they give a half azzed fine and a couple weeks suspension and then guess what...the fans still show up and cheer. And do we even need to get into how the league that supposedly is all for "Justice" when it comes to race almost never hires African Americans for high level positions and blackballed a player for taking a knee. Yet despite all of the negatives, it stays the course, pays basic lip service to fixing the issues and then lays on a bed made out of billion dollar bills. I can see why WBD would take a similar route. (no I would not)

That is just one example, I could find many more...

Look, I wanted a recast, or even a cancellation for many reasons but it was never going to happen and the people who honestly thought it would never took an econ class.

I wont lie, this looks amazing. I'm not an Ezra fan after a lot of his issues that have been very off-putting. But to see Keaton again as Batman, my childhood Batman is back! Supergirl looks amazing, a lot going on here and looks better than I ever could have imagined. I just hate I'm going into this knowing there will be no Henry Cavill Superman. The Ending of that era starts here through Aquaman supposedly and that is a very hard pill to swallow for me.

Affleck's Batsuit gets worse with every appearance lol. But the new Flash suit looks a lot better than I first thought.

That new Flash suit is amazing for sure. I was just looking at some of the gifs for better closer looks and wow indeed.

This is not a point of discussion, they 100% hyperbolized it and every fan who already had a confirmation bias against the movie immediately believed it without question. You can't look me in the eye and unironically say this movie would have "ruined DC" when crap like Suicide Squad and Josstice League exist. No way in hell would it have been worse than those movies. And all we have to go for it is he-said-she-said by WB executives whose opinions are biased to begin with so we can't even make proper judgment on the actual quality of the movie, especially with how very little we know about it.

The lack of nuanced discussion and disregard towards how the Batgirl ordeal was handled is mindboggling and just shows the massive hypocrisy of fandom entitlement. This is not something that should happen again to any movie and director in Hollywood, it sets a bad precedent and I hope to god it stays a rarity.

Yep. All of this. The NFL is such a perfect example. Hell, even the college football league is a good example. (Sandusky/Penn State scandal, anyone??)

The Batgirl film which was a straight to streaming film, is not the same as a big budget summer blockbuster.

I still think it was a lame excuse though. When has a bad film stopped a studio film releasing it? Something else was definitely a factor there.

It’s definitely a big mess, for sure. But then there are also stories from that one girl and other people around them that say Ezra helped them escape their homophobic/transphobic family. It’s all a huge mess.
Who realty knows what the absolute truth is at this point.

Had all this come out before or even mid production, then yeah, they should have definitely recast Ezra. But there was no way they would do so after the fact. They would have to reshoot the whole film.

I do think if they continue with this specific version of the Flash, they should absolutely recast. Regardless of whether Ezra is “better” or not.

Batgirl should never have been canceled, period, and to this day i think there were deeper internal political issues for why they decided to do it which we’ll never be privy to. It wasnt just simply, “this film is SO BAD it’ll ruin DC forever!”

No it likely wouldn't have, but lets not pretend the people who are starkly defending the film aren't doing the exact same thing.

I already said (in that post a dozen other ones) it was not the decision I would have made in that position. But that is easy for us to say. It is also not the first time it has happened and it wont be the last. To deny that is to deny history.

I just think the “it was too bad to release” thing is a lame and classless. Just say you couldn’t afford to release it and that you hope to work with the cast and crew on another project in the future. There was no reason to damage the reputations of all those people. WB punched down and that’s indefensible to me.
