The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 5

Do you reckon we can now say that they have made enough that a sequel is assured?

That's all the box office means to me. It can be the worst received in america and gross poorly domestically but its all a touch irrelevant to me as long as they are making another. Based on the fact I have thoroughly enjoyed both films of the reboot.

If you compare TASM 2 to Thor: Dark World which grossed $206 million, it's already almost $2 million behind it when you compare their daily box office grosses. Based on having lesser dailies than Thor: Dark World, TASM 2 should finish at about $203 million domestically.

Worldwide right now it's looking about $706.

In comparison to Rami's SM 1 and 2. They were better rated and making around $800 over 10 years ago is more impressive than making over $700 today.
Right. I have no problem with the Raimi SM's making more than the new series, but I'm saying that the fact that each series' sequel might make roughly around the same less than their predecessor is kind of odd.

SM - $821M
SM2 - $783M

$38M difference.

TASM - $757M
TASM2 - $705M (estimate)

$52M difference.

So we're looking at a $10M gap between differences.

Some posters have brought that up as a way to defend TASM 2 performance.

Hm? I'm just bringing it up because I think it's a tad bit odd of a coincidence. I actually didn't know SM2 made less than SM1. Weird because SM2 is the one that's praised.

I have no problem with Raimi's movies performing better, it's already factual. Those were the first Spidey movies to enter the cinema. Those movies took away people's "Spidey virginities" as I like to say.

Well lot of sequels that make less are sometimes praised more. The Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2, Spider-Man 2, Superman 2. I personally think the Two Towers is better than Fellowship.

Yeah, in SM-2's case I don't think it's bad that it grossed less than the first as it wasn't a tremendous gap as it will be between TASM & TASM 2. Plus, the sequel that came after is still the highest grossing Spider-Man movie to date. So it's not always true that sequels do less numbers.

After all, The Dark Knight did extraordinarily bigger numbers than Batman Begins, & was also of course praised more. It just really varies from movie to movie, that's all.

I like all of those sequels more than the original with maybe the exception of Superman.

$38M difference between SM's overall gross and SM2's. TASM and TASM2 estimatingly, we're looking at a $52M difference. Not that tremendous..

But yeah it's a weird case when sequels make less more but then are praised more in the long run. It's interesting.

Very true, but still, a drop isn't really what studios are expecting, and if they do have one, they don't want it to be by over half of $100 million.

Also, it may not seem tremendous until you take into account that not only is it a nice drop from the first film, but it's now continued a cycle of Spider-Man making less domestically. That $52 million becomes more of a big deal once you factor in that TASM made less than SM-3, & now TASM 2 is going to make even less than that.

lol I know that's just semantics and all, though.

And yeah, it's weird but interesting. You'd think that audiences would be more inclined to check out said sequels when they've been met with such praise.

May just depend on the movie, though. As we've seen in the past, there are sequels that outdo their predecessor by quite a lot. Lots of variables to consider with this equation.

Oh yeah it's definitely at a decline, this series, financially. Honestly, I'm gonna sleep easier now that I know it'll at least touch $700M ww.

Also, don't forget the foreign box office for TASM2 beat TASM's! That's cool. But something's gotta happen to fix the domestic box office.

Not counting for inflation, domestically the series dropped $30 million from SM1 to SM2 and it looks to be around $60 million from TASM1 to TASM2. So double. Not only that, but dropping $60 million from $260 million is a far greater percentage drop than $30 million from $400 million.

If TASM2 made over $370 million domestically like SM2 did, then you would see Avi Arad strutting down the street like Tobey Maguire in SM3.

Well I'm glad you'll be able to sleep.

Only you, Suzanne, and Hunter, SPIDEY. Though I'd assume C. Lee has a Robert Redford thing going on.

From a few days back, but I thought I felt my ears tingling ;)

For the record, I look EXACTLY like a supermodel. That's… what we were discussing, right?

Thought so. :word:

Are we going to cross the 200M DOM marker?

Not this weekend. Probably late next week.

I guess it's going to sit at around 198.3/198.5M on Sunday. Then it can make another 0.6/0.7M between next Monday and Thursday that'll put it at around 198.9/199.2M before next week end. I don't think it'll have another 0.8M or more in the bank for the 3 days so definitely no to 200M on that week end too. I think it should cross 200M on june 23th or june 24th at best. Then it'll maybe have another 2 millions left. I don't think it's going to go much higher than 202M dom.

I was going to say about 203, but the new theater count for TASM 2 is 682 in it's 7th week so it might not be as high as that.

Thor: DW was at 199 in day to day comparisons and made an additional 7 more but it was in 1,116 theaters in it's 7th week.

I think that is a sound assessment.

Erzengel I think it has a shot at 203 mil with a dollar theater run but that's about it.

Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back to an undetermined date in 2017.
