@angryfantasyfan Before the reboot, the franchise was making around 900 million without the boost of either IMAX or 3D, even after The Avengers, i'm quite sure it would do well, as long as you still upped the special effect and fight as was seemingly happening throghout the Trilogy. I think that the interest of the general public with it was slightly above the one for the Transformers movies.

Once you pushed the reboot and recast button so suddenly when the originals were still popular and fresh in people's minds many lost interest altogether. From what i'm hearing about the box office around here, it will still take a while to completelly get rid of this effect.

Across the board ASM2 isn't wowing with its international numbers. If it underwhelms in China, its international numbers could be in relative trouble. Avenging Spidey should be put on suicide watch if it does.

What would count as having an "underwhelming" performance in China? Under $100 million?

Avenging Spidey's enthusiasm is admirable though. I don't think he is trying to diss other comic movies, He just loves Spider-man.:spidey:

Considering what Cap 2 is doing over there, I'd consider it underwhelming. That said, I'm saying the numbers are underwhelming relative to the $1 billion prediction that Sony and Avenging Spidey have made, this movie is still going to make between $700-$850 million.

Did Sony actually come out and make an official statement about expecting 1B? If so, wow.

That's why I said Sony shouldn't have said they were expecting $1 billion (in the previous page). It's actual gross will seem underwhelming in comparison with their expectations even though the total gross is still great.

I think it's going to do better than we're expecting domestically. The first movie releasing on a Tuesday could be looked at as good or bad... This time, I think they picked a better release date.

Just how big does “Spider-Man 2,” directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, need to be? Pascal, who declined to be interviewed, has set a goal of $1 billion worldwide, say sources. Just 18 movies have minted that kind of loot, most recently Disney’s animated “Frozen,” Disney/Marvel’s “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3” — and Sony’s James Bond movie “Skyfall.”

I'll reserve judgement for the billion dollar argument a week after Godzilla releases. Going to kick it out of the IMAX seat.

It's still underwhelming relative to Raimi's trilogy too. But, I saw your post and wholeheartedly agreed. Sony is putting too high expectations on this franchise because they saw what Disney has done with the Avengers and I fear that the franchise might get crushed under its own weight.

Someone earlier blamed the underwhelming opening on Cap 2 causing fatigue, but I disagree. I think it might be general fatigue with Spider-Man, especially when Sony hasn't made a great Spider-Man film since SM2. Sony also doesn't have the luxury of hiding Spider-Man away (like Marvel is sort of doing with Iron Man) for a breather and bringing him back because of their contractual obligation to create a Spidey film every 5 years or face rights reversion.

So nobody from Sony ever publically said it had to make a billion.

No, it hasn't. But the media has plastered it all over that Sony has been banking on that number. It may be false, but it's out there and has impassioned some to predict $1 billion themselves so it can't truly be ignored.

It might still make 1 billion, we haven't gotten any official numbers from Antarctica yet

Oh I'm not doubting the sources. Still doesn't mean they wouldn't be fine with 800 to 900mil.

I think Sony would be silly not to be happy with 800 million.

In a post-Avengers world, you can't just expect to release the same kind of Spidey movies every two years and easily hit a billion.

Disney and WB are playing a very different game now and Sony can only to their best to keep up in the superhero world.

I'm sure they will be fine with $800-900 million, it's a very good increase over TASM. That being said if they really did spend $400 million on the movie and expected $1 billion, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up disappointing them.

260 DOM
490 OS

Those are still high numbers. It's not going to easily just swoop past those numbers laughing and waving.

I agree 800mil is a lot and yes it's going to be hard for Sony to keep up with the Joneses when the only own one big Superhero character. This villains plan sounds loopy to me, creative but loopy. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see these villain based movies doing nearly as well as Sony would want them to do.

Ms. Marvel how do you know Sony didn't offset some of that cost? I think they could have.

It's just that I haven't heard anything about it. When MOS did offset some of it's cost I read articles about it before the movie was released. Of course I could be wrong.

If it disappoints... We might seem a team up between Sony and Marvel, right?
