I think he means in the same way that Edward acts in Twilight or how Superman came off in Superman Returns, spying on Lois and such. It was intended to be romantic and touching, etc... but to fanboys (who will build a mountain out of any molehill) he was labelled as creepy/stalker,etc... I was not a fan of SR myself. The whole "I'm going to spy on the one I love-but for their own safety" is a lame, tired trope. I seriously hope that's not what's happening here (fanboy speculation being wrong? Imagine that )
