The worst part about the current situation is that we are looking at a MOS situation. Even worse than that, is the fact that no one saw it coming. I'm starting to wonder what Marvel could do with the franchise. At least then, we wouldn't have such a polarizing reaction.
I kinda saw it coming, if I'm honest. I've written about this elsewhere, but to me, 2014 is a bit like 2011, in terms of superhero movies. Like 2014, 2011 had 4 superhero movies on the slate:
Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, Green Lantern, X-Men: First Class. And back at the time, I argued that at least one of those films was going to be a letdown. At the time, I predicted
First Class, but of course it ended up being
Green Lantern.
This year, we have
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy. The fact that Cap and the X-Men are in the mix again heightens that feeling of deja vu! So once again, I talked about how law of averages dictated that one would be a letdown, but that the prediction was more difficult this time, as I was generally looking forward to all these films more than 2011's batch. But the one I settled on
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, based on the vibe I was getting from the trailers.
If this DOES turn out to be the weak link of the 4, then I'd say we got off lightly. As it's a pretty underwhelming film, but it's no turkey. It's certainly better than
Green Lantern. And if
Spider-Man 3 can rake in cash, I'm sure this will do just fine at the box office.
