Right, because he doesn't know who Spider-Man is... Or does he? I'm assuming this villain would be coming from Oscrop? Maybe Harry tells him, but otherwise HanShotFirst is right. It would need to come from Peter's mind, not Beck's illusion/holograms.

Os Crop = the Australian farming industry. :oldrazz:

I wonder if there will be any truth to those rumors a while back about January 19th (today) being the day for the Spider-man summit. Even if it is true though it would seem doubtful to me we would hear anything the same day, but one can always hope.

Doubt it. Today is a holiday.

Not sure where the rumor originated about January 19th being the day of the summit, but I know I had heard it on these forums a few times a ways back. Most likely no truth to it, but it still stuck in my head, so thought I would mention it.

Me neither. Spider-Man movies need to move away from ASM series and Sony.
If Sony somehow managed to move forward with Sinister Six and TASM3 and both films were masterpieces... then I'd totally change my mind. But that's never going to happen.

I remain confident the deal will happen, and not because of the rumors. Here's why:

The Spiderman franchise has been in a tailspin since SM3. Sony has no reason to believe things are going to get any better.

Marvel has been ruling the superhero box office, and shows no sign of slowing down. It's quite likely that even a portion of the proceeds from one MCU Spider-movie could prove more appealing than the risk of another Sony produced film. See the following:

-The real money for Spidey has always been in merchandising. Sony foolishly gave up those rights to Marvel. They could possibly negotiate back a cut of merchandise.

-Marvel has previously cut a deal with Universal to share distribution rights. They could feasibly do that again.

If any of these deals are tabled, no matter what Pascal and Arad feel, I'd be willing to bet the Sony execs force them to take it.

If Sony was smart they'd sell Spidey's film rights outright for a share of the merchandising and TV rights. That's where the true gold lies for a company in dire need of money.

Marvel made that deal with Universal before Disney took over. I seriously doubt Disney will give up any percentage of merchandising rights to Sony.

Even if it meant getting the film rights back? I think that's the key to the deal. Spidey's merchandise is a Hen that lays golden eggs.

Sony should get the rights to TSSM back and let Marvel handle all of the movies. That would be perfect IMO (but unlikely).

Sony wants to focus the shift from Film to TV, so... there's that.

Marvel gives Sony the TV rights and a portion of the merchandising rights for full film rights to Spider-Man:

We get Spidey in the MCU.
We get TSSM season 3 and more.
Sony makes more than 25M off Spidey in a 2 year span.

Everyone wins, it's all about finding the right % of merchandising rights to give them.

Exactly! The Merchandising itself is worth billions. Im not looking at this from Marvels perspective. Its Disney, and I just don't see them giving up any part of that when Sony is in critical condition here. Spidey not being in the MCU is not going to hurt Marvel in anyway. They making money left in right with current films and merchandising. Sony is the one who needs to rethink their strategy. They need the MCU far worse than the MCU needs Spidey. Disney got a taste of that merchandising loot. Don't see them giving any of that up.

Oh that would be perfect. I just hope they find a way to make it happen.

As Spiderine said, Sony needs Marvel, and Marvel does not need Sony. They are doing them a favor. Marvel "wants" Spider-Man, but does not "need" him. They are basically doing Sony a favor and Sony has to avoid being stubborn.

Sony: But we want more money and control!
Marvel: Well you're lucky to get that.

That's the problem for Sony. Marvel doesn't need Spider-Man, it's clear they're doing fine without him. They're turning characters that nobody knew existed into bigger profits than Sony is doing with their poster boy. Sony will not hold on to Spider-Man's film rights forever, not at this pace. It's a timing game that Sony can't afford to lose. They need to sell Spidey or create some deal with Disney before he isn't valuable anymore. He's becoming less and less profitable for Sony each year and it's dragging his price tag down each year. Had they sold him in 2008 when the MCU was first starting and right after SM3 dragged in all that money, they would have cashed in. Now, they need to be careful when turning down offers on what used to be the CBM MVP.

this is what im hoping will happen. What i really want is for Sony to delay S6 for a while and just put out TASM3 and make it a GOOD movie, like better than Spider-Man 2 in terms of reception. But the likelihood of that happening is low :(

Sony has two options:

1. Continue with Sony Spiderman movies, lose more money, and lose the film rights to Spider-Man completely

OR

2. Make a deal with Marvel and continue to co-own the character and make money for many more years to come, possibly decades.

Realistically speaking, Sony needs to ditch the TASM franchise altogether. There is too much baggage that comes along with it.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, the possibility of TASM 3 is higher than Marvel rebooting Spidey at this point, IMO.

That's the way I see it. Also, option 2 offers less risk and more potential gain for Sony.

We totally agree on this. Ball is in Sony's court. I just don't believe Disney will offer a percentage of merchandising. I could be wrong but I just don't. Like you said, they can either sell the property outright or try to get some sort of distribution deal on solo Spidey films. Or get a percentage of film profits and have Disney pay a fee to Sony every time Spidey shows up in an ensemble flick.

It would cost Sony absolutely no production costs and they get to reap benefits from anything Spidey film related. Its a better deal than what Universal currently has. I would include DVD/rental profits as well.

Sony better jump on this.

I'm not a psychic, but TASM3 will more than likely continue the trend of SM movies making less and less money. I can't imagine it reaching the $700M earned by TASM2.

And the production budget would still be about $200M+ along with a major marketing budget. Are these movies even profitable for Sony at this point?
