I have no problem with the CGI in any Spidey films but TASM2 mostly because I felt some of Electro's scenes didn't look that good along with the Rhino.

The thing you have to remember about the Raimi films is 2 things:

1. CGI was very new. Directors would balance CGI and practical effects. When you look at Episode 1, yea not the best example but go along, most of the effects in terms of the city designs and looks with Naboo were practical and they still stand to this day because they used it sparingly. Here are examples:

When you look at Raimi's first Spider-Man, all the CGI scenes include Goblin flying on his glider, spidey sense and Spidey web slinging. Just about the rest of the film is practical. Scene where Goblin crashes Jonah's office? Practical. All the fight scenes? Practical. When you look at the scene where Spidey is holding the car and MJ, it's a mix of practical and CGI. CGI backgrounds but most of it is done through close ups which are practical.

For Spider-Man 2, same thing. Mix of practical and CGI. Dr Ock's arms were done via puppets for some scenes.

The point is nowadays I do feel film directors are far more lazy where instead of using models they will CGI it. When you look at the original Star Wars films, they are 90% practical. All the space battles? Practical.

Your film will stand the test of time when you do more with practical effects then CGI. CGI isn't bad but again it's how you use it. In 90% Superman's scenes in Man of Steel, they were done via practical effects through wires and a green screen.

I will admit, on Krypton the CGI looked off a tad and overblown but I'm more talking about Superman's scenes.

Point is in the early days of CGI, directors would find a way to mix practical and CGI so they that they didn't rely on CGI. Nowadays too many directors rely on CGI. It's the directors who know how to use the CGI that make films in which CGI stands the test of time. The Planet of the Apes reboots films, Peter Jackson's King Kong, some of the Star Wars prequels (there are still scenes like in Episode 2 that seem bad), the Christopher Nolan Batman films, Snyder with Superman. I will even say Webb did a good job in TASM1.

That's my 2 cents.

Great post Levi.

If we're talking about visuals

Dawn of the Planet of the apes had some absoutely mind blowing visuals

The ape hair, oh god. I hated apes until the planet of the apes reboot, now they're happy CGi balls of fun

Well they had the company who did visuals for Avatar along with Andy Serkis acting and knowing how the tech works.

Agreed. Dawn had incredible CGI. I think they deserve the Oscar for best visual effects, but I certainly wouldn't be mad if Captain America: Winter Solider, GOTG or X-Men Days of Future Past won since they also had great effects.

That's one of the best posts you've ever made, LEVI.

Do you guys thought that the practical swing works only with rookie spidey like TASM or do you think it can only be done by CGI?
I feel that TASM 2 swinging was great but the CGI was too noticable i feel in the future they can mix practical and CGI maybe a stunt double with cables
Aside from that, did Webb ever use the spider-cam?

okay guys i think we all can agree that in terms of PRACTICAL EFFECTS these two films series are THE BEST in this category:
LORD OF THE RINGS
JURASSIC PARK

OT Star Wars series should be in that.

I mean just look at the space battles. All practical. Mind blowing how hard that must have been.

Oh absolutely! Jurassic Park used a lot of impressive practical effects for the dinosaurs that still hold up today!

It's my #1 favorite movie of all time.

A lot of the same can be said for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, fantastic practical and digital effects that still rival some films today.

Edit: Agree with Levi the original Star Wars trilogy is up there too.

Lord of the Rings >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Star Wars in every single category. Heck, Lord of the Rings >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> about everything in every category

actually, Lord of the Rings has better and more realistic CGI than some films today. and Lord of the Rings was made in 1999.

Is great that even these days , directors choose to use practical effects vs CGI which is cheaper and easier to make, talks about the passion they have in their projects

There is not a single computer generated thing in this gif at all.

Indeed. But you do know that we're not talking about the original trilogy with the added CGI right? We're talking about the theatrical version which didn't have all those added CGI parts.

thumbs up man!! Jurassic Park is like part of my childhood. it's a part of me, it exists within my DNA. same for LOTR.
I don't care how stupid the people are in Jurassic Park, that movie will always be a 10/10. LOTR trilogy will always be a 100/10.

yeah i know. I basically know everything there is to know about LOTR, im a Tolkienite XD XD XD
Yeah, it's a shame that Peter Jackson opted out of the practical effects decision in The Hobbit movies.

*Edit: Whoops I think I misinterpreted what you said. You meant it was filmed in 1999. My bad.

Agreed, The Hobbit movies unfortunately look too fake to me. The orcs looked better when they were actually people in costume and make up and not just CGI.

That is the technique they should have used for the Goblins. In Raimi's film and ASM2.

Why hide Willem Dafoe's face with a Power Range mask? Accentuate his already creepy features with prosthetics like that.

I know, the orcs in The Hobbit look like CGI video game fluff that you would expect to see in some low budget fantasy copy cat movie of Tolkien. They looked like the little troll people in Spider-Wick Chronicles. They didn't feel real at all.
The orcs in Lord of the Rings were downright perfect. They were menacing and absolutely disgusting. The real shocking part was finding out that they were real people and werent computer generated at all. People actually rolled around in mud and filth and wore all of these prosthetics and make-up to look like that. It does the books justice.

Hopefully if Marvel get Spider-man back the goblin can look like this.

Exactly, which is what I thought TASM2 did a good job of with the Goblin design. Although the hair was weird, at least they didn't cover his face up with a cheesy mask. Prosthetics is always the best way to go. Imagine if we got a Green Goblin that looked like something from Lord of the Rings???? Holy crap that would be awesome!! of course they wouldn't make him as dirty and filthy though lol

While it just fell like that because I have never disagreed with people about a movie has much has I have with this movie and one the big complaints about the movie is that the movie is to cheesy even though sm 1-3 where more cheesy no one really complains about it being cheesy. So its like sm 1-3 where not to cheesy but asm2 is? Get out of hear. How can you complain about asm2 being overly cheesy yet not complain about the same thing with sm 1-3? You also have people who complain about the movie having dubstep music say that the score sucks even though the substep is just a small fraction of the score.

Raimi's style is cheesy, but it's a more earnest cheese. It's like the silver age comics. The little montages of New Yorkers reactions and the spinning news paper headlines were great touches.

And the tone was consistent. Plus in the first two films the emotional beats were fantastic. The finale scene of the first film at the cemetary with Elfman's score still gives me goosebumps.

ASM2 the tone was all over the place and it just had this cynical "my **** don't stink" vibe.

IDK why the hell they didn't use this. i mean, it looks a little cheesy, but add in tons more detail and make him look scarier and boom you have the perfect goblin design.
