Torment? That was McFarlane. Spider-Man #1-5 which came out just for him to draw AND write.

McFarlane wrote all of his issues of Spider-Man until he left in issue #16 to start Image Comics with the rest of his peeps.

Torment should have been called "How not to write a comic book story" by Todd McFarlane. The art was great but every page for 5 issues straight was DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM
DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM
DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM
DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM
DOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOMDOOM

in 32pt font.

Occassionally interupted with "RISE ABOVE IT ALL!!!"

and McFarlane's ridiculous insistence that people start calling Spider-Man the ArachKnight. :whatever:

Now, let's be fair....that was a blatant tongue in cheek remark to the Burton Batman movies that were ruling the world at the time.

Well folks, we can forget about the Superior Spider-Man being a 616 Miles Morales because Marvel has just released the cover for Superior Spider-Man #2

SuperiorSpiderMan_2_Cover_02.jpg

Now granted, covers on comics have a tendency of being misleading, although they certainly can reflect what's going on in the issue itself. So if it's the later case and looking at Mary Jane's startled "What the hell?" reaction at Spider-Man kissing her, this seems to suggest one of the following:

1. The "Peter Parker faked his death but continues to be Spider-Man" theory, and that this cover is reflecting the moment in which Peter reveals to MJ that he's still alive, much to her shock and surprise. Or

2. Someone other than Peter under the mask whose identity MJ doesn't know, who decides to put the moves on her. All she knows is that isn't definitely isn't Peter.

And if the latter, you know whose behavior this Spider-Man instantly reminds me of? Phil Urich. "But wait?" You might ask, "Isn't he currently the Hobgoblin?" Well, Dan Slott did say Phil Urich would have a major status quo change after the current "Danger Zone" arc, did he not? Well what if after that story, Phil is no longer the Hobgoblin, and that whatever happens in issue #700--like say Peter kills Doc Ock and thus, out of guilt, retires as Spider-Man--Phil decides to take up Spider-Man's identity for himself?

I'm going to hold out for a complete opinion on it until I actually read 698 to 700. However, seeing some of the preview images and hearing "darker" Spider-Man has me cringing.

Don't we HAVE a darker Spider-Man with Scarlet Spider?

Isn't there a darker book in the Spider-Man Universe also called, I don't know, VENOM in which Flash Thompson wields the alien symbiote and is SUPER dark?

Why does EVERYTHING always have to be so dark and grim? :whatever::oldrazz:

I know one thing is for sure I'm not renewing my Marvel subscription. I will hold out and see how it turns out but my "Marvel's track record when it comes to giant life altering events with Spider-Man" sense is tingling and has me VERY worried that this is going to be a big barrel of suck.

The best news? That Ryan Stegman is doing the pencils. He's awesome sauce but not even Stegman has me stoked to want to pick up the book. The Superior Spider-Man? Really? I've seen theories that it's Peter Parker but Doc Ock pulled a mine switch. That could happen. I've also seen a decent theory that Peter quits being Spider-Man and Kaine takes over as Spider-Man. I'll believe the Kaine thing but what's that mean for Scarlet Spider? Yost is still writing the book. So, I guess that rules it out??

All I know is that if it's not Ben Reilly or Kaine I think I'm done with Spider-Man. I don't see how anything else could work. I'm hoping to be super surprised and have my socks knocked off but I just really don't see how at this point.

I've said it previously. Sometimes you realize you outgrow a certain character and I really think I'm about done with the Spider-Man character for a while. Maybe this whole thing will reinvigorate my joy in the character but I just don't see it. Too many bad memories and balls being dropped badly in past events. It just seems like 700 is a great jumping off point. :csad:

That cover certainly does certainly heighten my interest for the upcoming change. The thing is once I know what goes down in ASM 700 will it really matter? Stillanerd continues to bring up some great points and questions....

I also never really counted the Miles Morales 616 rumors. I'd believe the Ben Reilly ones before I'd believe those. One thing that's interesting is that Andy Maguire is a scrawny high school kid, probably either the same height or even shorter than MJ. That Spider-Man looks a little bigger there. It a minor observation but it's fun to speculate.

Maybe they will create a new character
If this is Peter with a new name and a fake toe nail I'll laugh

Stillanerd, can you write your own comic...i would buy the crap out of it

Couldn't agree more.

Kaine, when drawn right, should be a big guy...if anyone could draw him right it would be Stegman...

That does also look like Peter's chin line in that image...

Let me know if it's still Peter and he's like, "Hey, MJ, I remembered that we're supposed to be married!" Otherwise, I'm content to continue ignoring it. :oldrazz:

Everything else aside, I love the red and black costume. :o

Hey, I take offense to that lol. In all seriousness, I like the name. It adds to Spidey's long list of nicknames; web head, spidey, wall crawler. Plus, how else was McFarlene supposed to convey how serious and brooding Spider-Man had become without an obligatory reference to Batman? #onlykidding

I'm wondering if there will ever be any follow-up in Amazing/Superior Spider-Man to the Miles Morales tease at the end of Spider-Men. There wasn't really all that much that I found very interesting about that book, but Peter's shock at whatever he read about Miles was one of them.

Okay, folks, try this on for a crackpot theory:

Doc Ock does transfer his mind into a new body, but not Peter's. He transfers his mind into the body of Jay Jameson. This now allows him to be with his beloved Aunt May, and celebrates the occasion with Aunt May, who of course doesn't realize it's really Doc Ock, by having sex.

The next stage of Doc Ock's revenge is to finally kill Spider-Man, but he does this by luring Peter into a trap. How? He has Hyrdo-Man, disguised as Peter, kidnap Mary Jane, who tells her about how Doc Ock figured out who Spider-Man is and is thus in danger. Spidey, of course, is made aware of this and tracks down Hydro-Man, where he, along with Doc Ock's cellmates, like Morbius, Alistair Smythe, etc. battle against Spider-Man, wearing him down to the point where Doc Ock can move in for the kill.

How? Well we know that Doc Ock, even while separated from his robotic arms, still has mental control over them, right. Well, what if Doc Ock, aside from mentally controlling people with his octobots, gains control of his robotic harness (the eight armed one) and, after using various villains to subdue Spider-Man, takes a hold of him...and rips his arms and legs off. Then, believing he's finally defeated Spider-Man, leaves him for dead.

However, Doctor Connors--who remember is trapped in his Lizard form--finds that Peter is still alive and, with the help of a guilty Morbius, takes Peter's body to Morbius' lab at Horizon, where, using a perfected regeneration formula and with the help of Morbius, regrows Peter's limbs. But while it doesn't transform Peter into a half-reptile monster, it does have other side-effects...Retractable claws on fingertips and big toe, increased strength and senses, and greater aggressive tendencies.

Peter then goes after Doc Ock, who by that time has revealed himself to Aunt May, and that her beloved nephew, Peter was Spider-Man and that he killed him. However, Spidey finds them and, during the battle, Aunt May sacrifices herself to prevent Doc Ock from killing Peter. Peter, of course, is enraged and, as a result, kills Doc Ock. Peter, goes over to his critically wounded Aunt May, who tells Peter how proud Uncle Ben would be, then dies in his arms. The cops arrive and naturally conclude that Spider-Man has murdered Doc Ock, and Spider-Man escapes.

The following day, the Daily Bugle and other news outlets report that Doc Ock, Jay Jameson, and May Parker-Jameson were found dead, and that Peter Parker, the police having found his arms and legs, also conclude he is dead. There's a massive funeral for Peter, Aunt May, and Jay attended by, of course, the supporting cast. Peter, of course, decides it's better to make the world believe he's dead, since too many people have associated him with Spider-Man and, as was the case with Doc Ock, it cost him the life of the woman he swore to protect. Thus, with Peter Parker "dead," and with Peter's new abilities, Peter decides the time has come for him not only to be a "Superior" Spider-Man.

Where's C.B Cebulski when you need him :)

No, he's in charge of creative development at Marvel. So he'd be the guy who'd give you a job, I'd assume. :o
