The Avengers The Avengers Critics Reviews Thread - Part 3

Yeah, sometimes they agree with us, sometimes they don't.

Not a critic, but an endorsement from a famous Dark Lord of the Sith:

Darth Vader @darthvader

May the Fourth be something something... OMG AVENGERS DAY! #StarWarsAvengersDay

:woot:

Also, I didn't realize Leonard Maltin was not a Top Critic at RT, which strikes me as strange.

Anyway, he gave it a positive.

Total reviews: 198
Fresh: 183
Rotten: 15

A rave from The Atlantic's newest reviewer, Christopher Orr. Not sure if it'll be up on RottenTomatoes or not, but Atlantic is a renowned publication. I think the beginning in particular is very well written, with some Avenger-y background.

As always, beware that there may be spoilers.

Orr is not only on RT, he's a top critic.

The critics who choose to dislike The Avengers stick out like sore thumbs. And yes, I do think that most of them are choosing to downrate it for personal reasons. Some want to send a message that they disapprove of the entire superhero genre and want it to die out (Scott, O'Hehir, etc.). Others are making a show of their disdain for mainstream entertainment in general. And the rest want to stir controversy in order to get hits on their sites. When a review is used to push personal agendas instead of critiquing the film at hand, the critic fails at his/her task.

Bizarrely, the negative review that seemed fairest, that didn't lash out at superheroes or their fans, was the village voice. She wanted more characterization and depth, which is a fair critique even if you disagree. In other words, she didn't rant.

I always say that, if you have a bias against a certain genre, then you shouldn't do a review of a movie in that genre. However, if you have to do a review, then you should set all bias aside and rate the movie fairly. So far, only a few of the negatives have done that. It's the professional way to do it.

Critics can't be unbiased as hard as they try. We all have our own little opinions about every facet of entertainment and it seeps in.

Those guys have a fun few years/decades in front of them :woot:

They better get used to it...cause after Avengers these types of films aren't going anywhere but up!

Of course, critics are humans and they're biased just like you and me, but some are just so blatant about it that it makes them seemed unprofessional, not to mention the kind of reviews they wrote (such as AO Scott's). One would expect those critics to be a better reviewer than those independent internet bloggers.

Good read

io9.com Several Reasons Why Avengers Kicks Ass (That You Haven’t Already Heard)

"Here are a bunch of reasons why The Avengers is more than just a well-made comic book movie. They're as spoiler-free as we could make them, while still using nouns.
The Avengers is all about payoff, after five Marvel movies worth of setup — but part of the pleasure of this movie is that it never feels like it's trying hard to give us what we want. Or what we're "owed." The Avengers takes for granted that we're going to get what we've been waiting for, and then sets about giving us something more. And different."

Yeah, but there is a diference between aknowledging that no human being can be totally objective nor subjective in their views, and a completely diferent thing is not even to try to be as objective as humanly possible.

A critic without baggage is impossible; letting your baggage get the best of you, is something else.

We have to remember that critics are basically just opinions that get published...yes it seems very unprofessional to deride a movie based solely on it's genre, but I always just tell myself this is just another person's opinion. Can't take their word as law

Nah, i dont think anybody here is taking their word as law.

Its just, i believe, that we like movies we love to triumph on every level, critics, box office etc etc...

Haha, SLJ was just having some fun. People are so damn touchy. As if he's actually calling for A.O. Scott to be fired over a negative review.

At Rotten Tomatoes, it's 93%... 210 fresh, 15 rotten.

If I'm not wrong, we need 6 fresh reviews (and no more rotten review) to bring it up to 94% again.
