I am slightly worried it might not make enough money, though. I mean, if the 260 mil mark is true.....it has a bigger budget than Avatar.

No way .... Avatar definitely cost more than $260 million. The budget was so large on that thing that to this day they still openly refuse to discuss the exact number. All they execs at Fox will simply tell you that in hindsight it was money well spent.

It'll make AT LEAST as much as Iron Man 2, add Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Disney, 3D, Joss Whedon, the mega event feel and how good the movie is and that's almost a guaranteed success.

i think 260m is fair and with the giant build up all the Marvel Studios movies have built it i cant see it not making it back and more.

add in Whedonites, 3D and other intangibles and im sure it will do well...it having great early buzz and being a GOOD movie will also push it.

Ocean's 11 is on HBO. I've probably watched this movie about a couple hundred times over the years. I absolutely love what Soderbergh did with it. It's what I hope Whedon can do with an ensemble, especially from the dialogue/interactivity standpoint.

Yeah I was watching Oceans 11 too on HBO and was thinking the same thing

Why wouldn't this make enough money?

I'm not worried it won't make enough to pass it's budget. I'm just a bit worried it won't be big enough to live up to our expectations of what it will make. This film has almost twice the budget of any other Marvel Studios film, and, unless I'm mistaken, the highest budget for any superhero film ever made.

It just seems too big is all. I mean, Marvel's been really careful with their films so far, with Iron Man 2 being the highest at about...what, 200 something mil?

I trust the film will be good, but I'm not sure how the general audience will think about it. Iron Man will be the main selling point, for sure, but will people avoid it if they didn't like the other films, or haven't seen them? There's just a lot riding on it.

Why worry? Why don't you just sit patiently until May 2012? It's not like you personally have anything on the line with this movie.

I'm not insanely worried or anything. Not like 'OH NOEZ ITZ TOO BIG or anything.

I really don't see how this could not do great. People love Iron Man, they love Thor, and I'm guessing they love Captain America for I haven't heard anything negative about it... I really liked it myself.

True. I'm positive it will do very well.

A Fox executive said in November 2009 that "Avatar cost $237 million plus $150 million for marketing, end of story." Cameron said he waited for the technology to catch up so he could make it, and when he did -- he made sure that the finished product came in on time and on budget. He had a year and a half of post-production, not the usual 4-8 months most movies get. Of course, Fox still hasn't released an official budget number for Avatar, so it could be $300M for all I know.

The thing is, several of these actors are famous or up-and-comers. Just because they have a contract to appear in X amount of movies, doesn't mean they won't get a nice fat paycheck raise for each film. (RDJ apparently commands $12M per film now.) Then add in the 4-6 months of post-production time and contracting CGI houses to get shots done on time.

The thing is, it entirely makes sense for its budget to be that huge. The films leading up to it have had "reasonable" budgets, and they've done "reasonably" good business. But the thing that Marvel can't afford is for The Avengers to come out, and be criticized along the lines of, "it could have been great but Marvel was too cheap to give it a budget to match its ambition".

Sure, a budget that big (and that's before anything is added for promotion) is a gamble. But not making the gamble, and winding up making a film that seems "too small" for what it's supposed to be, would be a mistake.

I'm just glad that -- if the report is accurate -- it sounds like they know that The Avengers is no time to skimp on anything.

That's exactly how I see it, sgaana.

Same way I see it as well.

The hype for this film has been building up since the first Iron Man. Not only that, but the creativity of both directors and writers has been compromised because Marvel demands that everything fits into this sprawling epic called "The Avengers". If this film doesn't go above and beyond in both aspects, technical and creative, it will inevitably disappoint a LOT of people. The hype for this has been building for too long for Marvel to release a film that's just average.

With that said, I wish Joss the best of luck. I don't know if he was the best choice to grab a hold of Marvel's Holy Grail, but only time will tell.

Yes. Cap is the distraction. In a broader sense, he would be the STRATEGY against the Hulk. Aiming his fellow Avengers where they need to be. Altho, I think Cap would be able to get in a few good pressure point hits, and POSSIBLY, be able to knock Hulk off his feet.
I forget who the saying came from, but :
"Among folks like these, at any given time, Cap is ALMOST NEVER the most powerful guy in the room, however, it's safe money on him being the most dangerous."

cap can't knock out hulk with a haymaker, hell he probably cant knock him down/off his feet with a punch but he's pretty strategic. i can imagine a fight in a construction site, he'd probably distract hulk with something, like a far explosion with timed nailguns or whatever hell he can do then out of nowhere, come swinging in on a crane for an assisted drop kick that could POSSIBLY knock hulk back, or at least unsteady, before throwing his shield to a lever that'd drop 10 tons of scrap on the hulk.

just stuff like that. but for sure, if he was trying to brute it, or tank it, he'd get his ass kicked.

I dont think Joss Whedon is a big enough draw to the General Audience...they might not know who he is

Honestly I don't think we even have to worry about him being a draw or not, I'm sure its good that fanboys know but as far as the GA goes, all of the heroes are the draw for this.

I still can't get over that Whedon is directing. I think it's a fantastic match, but if someone were to have told me during those Iron Man days that Whedon would be directing The Avengers, I'd have lololololol all over their face.

It's great.

Exactly, this is purely about the heroes who every member of the GA should know pretty well by now.

Nothing too interesting, but do you guys remember when I said a guy from Facebook said he'd be playing a [BLACKOUT]mercenary that Captain America takes down at an airport[/BLACKOUT]? Well, he just updated his FB status.

So if Cap is taking down a SHIELD Mercenary, what could that mean?

Wait, why aren't we talking about this more?
