Why even bother posting Cap's worldwide total when *most* of the world hasn't seen it yet?

So far, Mojo has posted *only* the $2 mil it made in Italy. Most of Europe and the rest of the world won't even get the release until later in August. (Hell, Japan won't see it til October.)

We won't have an accurate read on Cap's totals until *at least* the end of August.

I was going to not include Cap. But I did instead. So... Yeah.

The question with Avengers is whether it will be perceived by audiences as the big event film that Marvel studios wants it to be. If it is, then it will draw a bigger audience than the individual films. This is required for it be perceived as a success, especially with that budget. But it's also possible that it will play more like a new franchise, like Thor and Cap, in which case it will have a hard time being a financial success with a budget like that.

I think that is what hatebox is getting at, i.e. the audience for this movie might not be much bigger than for the individual films.

It's up in the air at this point. I think it will at least do IM domestic numbers + IM2 international numbers, but even that remains to be seen. There are so many variables, including of course the biggest one of all, the quality of the movie. As a fan, I think it's awesome that this movie is happening, and I will just hope for the best. It could be huge, but it's not guaranteed.
I guarunee Marvel wants this to be HUUUGE, especially with the fan expectations. Kevin Feige commented on how massive the Transformers 3 trailer looked and pretty much said he wanted that level of epic for The Avengers. The difference is that The Avengers will have a better story and better characters than Transformers 3.

I don't think Avengers will be perceived as a new franchise or movie.

It's basically a sequel. A sequel to five other films. I think it should be big. At least Iron Man big anyway. I think if it does include the Skrulls or Thanos, and is played as a alien invasion disaster movie... with superheroes, it could be massive.

Like say, the trailer has shots of New York getting attacked by big alien ships, then Iron Man and Thor fly into battle? That **** will have audiences pissing in their pants with excitement.

According to /film, the Avengers budget is $260 million! :wow:

Armagh-born McGarvey – currently in New Mexico shooting a $260m Marvel Comics’ extravaganza, The Avengers – has come a long way for the kid who first got his film break when as a student at the local Christian Brothers school, he was given a Super 8 camera by an inspirational teacher.

That's 10 more than the TDKR and 65 more than Transformers 3.

I Have no doubt in my mind that the Avengers is going to be my favourite film of next year! Oh, and 260 mil???? Fook me sideways :wow:

Seeing what Transformers 3 did with less money gives me high hopes this film will be epic.

I just posted that a few pages ago, and that source was taken from a Fujifilm magazine interview.

I'm sure it's the boat loads of cash for the actors salary. You are getting major stars from all these movies and putting them into one. The budget is going to be big. I was actually expecting bigger.

Well, the main principal actors had a multi-film contract enacted for this film, and so Marvel has the most say on what they can pay RDJ, SJL, ScarJo, the two Chris's, et al for this movie. Now they've got a handsome pay raise since this is a sequel to IM, Thor and CA but it won't be exorbitant. Plus if the movie overperforms, the actors will get bonuses on top of that.

I think most of the money is going towards the production itself, like contracting ILM and WETA for timely finished effects. Those two aren't cheap, especially if you're on a tight schedule and need to be finished by April 2012.

DKR's budget is $250m?!! Wow, makes the Avengers budget seem not that big unless Batman is going to be fighting aliens and inviting the Justice League to help out, lol.

TDKR budget is so big because Nolan doesn't like to use a lot of CGI. I'm curious to see what the Avengers budget goes to.

It's impressive how you love to downplay everything 'marvel'.
Btw, you might be somewhat right if you're talking US numbers. From the foreign numbers, i don't see how Thor is significantly less loved.

This

Alot of people seem to forget that foreign numbers matter as well.

I actually doubt that very seriously.

Look at how poorly alien invasions have performed in the last few years --- Cowboys & Aliens, Super 8, District 9, Falling Skies, V, The Day the Earth Stood Still, War of the Worlds, etc.

It's like all of us (including us here at SHH) are expecting an alien invasion to be inevitable. Unless Marvel can bring something new to the table with their version of an alien invasion (hint: they can't....there's nothing unique or fresh about Skrulls or Thanos or Kree or others at all), then you're going to have a very tough sell to the GA.

At this point, I think a Ragnarok might be the best bet, and might, in fact, be what they're shooting for. Rather than an invasion by aliens, what if it's all about Loki unlocking the gates to the other Nine Worlds and releasing hordes of frost and fire giants, rock trolls, dark elves, and even Fenris and Jormungandr onto an unsuspecting Midgard...that *would* be fresh and unique.

Have LOTR invade the Earth instead of the usual array of ID4 aliens and giant saucers.

I wonder if Loki tricks Hulk into fighting Thor. Like he figures "Maybe this big green sumb**** can take him out". I hope Hulk says he's the strongest one there is at least once in the movie.

Cowboys and Aliens took this weekend after all the tickets were counted
Super 8 cost 50 mil to make and earned 181 mil and has a RT score of 80%
District 9 cost 30 mil to make and earned 210 mil and has a RT score of 91%
Falling Skies had the highest cable launch and was renewed for a second season
....so I dont know where you are getting your info that alien invasion movies are doing poorly

Battle:Los Angeles...cost 70 mil to make and earned 202 mil
Technically we can call the Transformers movies alien invasion movies and im sure I dont need to bring up how much money its made

I dont think the GA is tired of alien invasion movies

I'm not even concerned with how much Avengers makes. It sounds like the movie is going to be awesome and that's all that matters.

Roach said it right

I just hate it when people use their opinions as fact...I may not have liked Battle LA or any or the other movies but Box Office and RT tells a different tale. i am sure that if you put in an alien invasion thwarted by a team of superheroes...that right there isnt anything the GA has seen before.

As for the Asgardian invasion...outside of Hulk and Thor what can this team do against them

Wait wait .....

Cowboys & Aliens opened up with only $36 million when the film cost $163 million. We all know that's a massive disappointment for them.

Battle Los Angeles tallied only $83.5 million total here in the U.S.

Super 8 only opened with $36 million with only $184 million worldwide.

Regardless of the ratings of any of these movies, while people may not be quote unquote "sick" of alien films, they're not flocking en mass to see them either.
