The main reason for the studios pulling out of the event in large capacity seems to be the rule of the Internet generation, which is notorious for showing incredible interest in a project only to abandon it on a moment's notice when it comes time to throw a buck into the donation bin. The studios may rightly view the Comic-Con crowd as an untrustworthy judge of a project's box office potential; after all, it is one thing to support a film project when you're treated to panels and swag, and another altogether when it comes time to put money where your mouth is – just look to Scott Pilgrim for evidence. Ah, such is the conundrum of Comic-Con.
