The bad start of summer 2010

I'm glad that Toy Story 3 opened with $109 million, but we have to acknowledge that it's $7 million less than Alice in Wonderland. Toy Story 3 could become the biggest movie of the summer, but it won't be the biggest of the year. If any movie is gonna take down Alice it's gonna be Harry Potter.
I think TS3 will easily surpass Alice domestically (WOM is fantastic for it), but its overseas performance will be hard to catch. Heck, did ANYONE foresee a Burton Alice in Wonderland movie making $1 billion at the BO? :lmao:

I have my doubts. Alice in Wonderland benefited from How to Train Your Dragon and Clash of the Titans underperforming. Toy Story 3 has Twilight 3 standing in its way. That movie is definitely not gonna underperform.

True.
Alice In Wonderland had a simultenous release in domestic and international markets and it was released in March.
TS3 is going to be spread over the coming month(s) and with summer around the corner , not everyone wants to go to the movies.

As for WOM. Remember that both Up and Wall-E were extremely well received with the critics yet they didn't exactly become huge grossers.
Up is at 293 million and Wall_e as 223 million.
Then again both movies opened with like 60 million or so whereas TS3 opened with 109 million. I think without the help from 3-d you're still look at a 80-90 million OW.
So who knows.

This is the first twilight movie to be released in the summer. Let's see how it'll face with the summer competition.
No doubt that kids will be dragging their parents to see TS3 again.
Also doesn't The Last Airbender open soon. The show has it's fair shar of kiddie fans so that could also affect the BO performance of TS3.

A weak summer.

No doubt that kids will be dragging their parents to see TS3 again.

Or they will want to see The Last Airbender, another movie that could hurt Toy Story 3's business. Especially since it's also in 3D. There's also Despicable Me which looks like a sleeper hit.

I think its become more of summer for kids, most movies coming out this summer appeal to kids, (The Karate Kid, Despicable Me, Toy Stoy 3, Last Airbender, ect.) with some big blockbusters (Inception and Expendables)

I agree with Kane. After May alot of movies have been/will be PG or are safe action adventures that are PG13

if the new trend becomes that blockbusters are PG i will die inside.

too many trends in movies I'm starting not to like and will eventually turn me off as a "movie goer" if they come to fruit. Those being if 3D completley replaces 2D and blockbusters become exclusively PG....I will quit watching movies all together and enjoy whatever I have in my collection currently for the rest of my life

but hey on the bright side, next summer it looks like Superhero films will be back in full swing Green Lantern, Thor, Captain America, X-Men First Class, Cowboys & Aliens, ect

you cant have it both ways boney lol

I think it will float between PG and PG13 unless some R rated blockbuster comes out and rakes in the cash

Get him to the greek was rated R and that did ok

Even Toy Story 3 disappointed you?

Haven't seen that one yet. Pixar has yet to make a bad movie IMO, ao I have to check this one out.

Why should I care about how much profit these studios are making? I never understood the point in BO watching.

wow. Really? It's what determines not just sequels, but probably what kinds of movies are going to be made in the future. Studios jump all over or continue things that are successful. That goes for the talent involved too.

also, some fans see BO success as a validation of their fandom...cough Avatar cough

it went the opposite direction for me, I was a big fan of AVATAR months before the release date but now Those bangwaggoners and "avatards" made me turn away from the fandom

Along with Toy Story 3, I think (I hope) Inception and Scott Pilgrim can save the Summer. Quality and Box Office.

I just have a feeling that The Last Airbender and Predators will disappoint me. No proof. just a gut feeling.

not interested in Airbender and I have reasonable expectations for Predators

The only movies worth seeing this summer that are left are Predators and Inception imo.

one....not many....that's what I think is required to spread out blockbusters a bit more evenly

so now the mindset among producers and directors is shoot for PG-13.....that way you can appeal to most everyone and get max number of asses in seats

and you can thank WOM for that....apparently it wasn't enough because there are less and less R rated blockbusters being made so ???

I feel the same. I might throw in The Expendables, even though I don't have expectations for it, it will just be a treat to see all of those guys in one movie.

We had plans to go to the movies for Father's Day, but after I told my dad there wasn't anything really worth watching, we saw some movies on PPV.

Only movies I'm really looking forward to the most is without a doubt Scott Pilgrim. Inception & Salt is on there too.
