The bad start of summer 2010

well this is a discussion about box office, not taste

now while I might not like something like the Karate Kid remake, if it can give the same postive message that the original did, I don't see that as a bad thing

and there really hasn't been that many EXCEPTIONAL movies out this summer IMO

there are movies I personally have enjoyed, but they aren't going to set the world on fire

I confess I am going to see Twilight opening night out of sheer morbid curiosity. I didn't see the first two, but it's starting to get to me.

Don't do it man, I went to New Moon on opening day. You may think that the stories of the fanbase are over exagerrated, but they are very much not. I live in Ireland as well, so I shudder to think of what you'll be faced with in America. :oldrazz:

Fatter girls. And their lack of an Irish brogue will mean I can't even have that to fantasize on.

What really pisses me off is they're making it PG-13. To quote the Joker to Nolan, "what happened did your balls drop off?" I mean isn't this the guy who wrote and directed momento?

This film should have been rated R, but Warner figured they could suck in all the teeny bopper TDK fans to go see it.

As opposed to Ironman's Ivy league intellectual audience?

As much as I liked the original Karate Kid I don't think it is a sacred cow that can't be remade, especially in this age of remakes. I haven't seen it, not really all that interested, but the reviews I've read have generally been positive and the box office shows that its resonating with audiences, I don't see a problem. It appears to be a remake that isn't throwing feces on the original and bombing at the box office to boot.

As for this movie summer, I think it has been pretty lackluster. The one film I truly enjoyed all year has been Kick Ass. Iron Man 2 was underwhelming and I haven't generated much interest in going to the theater since. I might go see Karate Kid, based on reviews and Taraji Henson. And I'll eventually go see A-Team. But I guess the only movie left I actually want to see is Predators.

I watched it today, and it's good. Really, you can think of it more as a spiritual remake or sequel than a traditional remake if you want (none of the names remain the same, the situation have similarities but overall is different, it's Kung Fu instead of Karate). It's being called The Kung Fu Kid in a lot of other markets.

I see very little reason for any mainstream comic book film (save for the ones that are violent at the core (Punisher, Blade) to be rated R

nor have I been presented with any valid logical reason why a Batman film should be rated R

the R rating doesn't automatically make things better

I could only see that being appropriate when making a film adaptation of a particular adult-oriented story, like Arkham Asylum or DKR.

Absolutely.

Man before the start of the summer i had Iron Man 2 , Toy Story 3 and Potter hitting 400 million each.
Iron Man 2 is struggling to hit 300 million which should've been a breeze.

Hopefully Toy Story can perform better.
It's G rated , has short running time ( 108 min) , 3-d feature and comes of 2 succesful predecessors as well as an group of young parents who watched the movies as kids. Early reports say that movie is just as compelling as the first 2 movies.
So hopefully Toy Story 3 can live up to the expectations.

well they had more than enough time to make TS3 flawless so it better be as compelling if not more than the first two films.

expectations wise, probably....it was projected for 28-30 million and made twice that....and the budget was probably not that high

so is Karate Kid this years Hangover?

It's waaaayyyyyy too early for that to say.
Let's say how it'll perform when Toy Story 3 debuts. Karate Kid has performed above expectations but it still has a long way to reach 270 million.

yeah toy story 3 will probably knock it's shoes off

Well Toy Story has opened as expected.
Let's see if it can manage to keep up to momentum. I'm still going for a 400 million gross in the domestic markets

Karate Kid's hold over are also very good which means that the movie will gross 100 million by the end of next week.

I'm glad that Toy Story 3 opened with $109 million, but we have to acknowledge that it's $7 million less than Alice in Wonderland. Toy Story 3 could become the biggest movie of the summer, but it won't be the biggest of the year. If any movie is gonna take down Alice it's gonna be Harry Potter.

I've been just so disapointed week after week of 2010. Nothing has impressed me.
All my money is now riding on Inception.

Why should I care about how much profit these studios are making? I never understood the point in BO watching.

Box office dictates what movies are made. I see you have a Green Lantern avatar. Lets say, for instance, if Green Lantern flops next year then that means no sequel and it may cause Warner Bros. to rethink their whole Justice League thing.

You don't have to pay attention to box office, but it has a big impact on the industry.
