The Batman Reboot Casting Thread - Part 7

Jake is close to 40. And right now it's looking like they won't have to worry about connecting anything to the DCEU.

Well everything is a question mark right now, but lets just say the DCEU films move forward as usual until further notice to make my argument. And yes, Jake is close to 40 but, honestly, he looks closer to 30 in my eyes. He doesn't fit my idea of Bruce Wayne/Batman. It would greatly disappoint me if casted, but who knows, if he were cast, maybe i'll be pleasantly surprised

It would greatly disappoint you if one of the greatest actors on the planet plays batman? He'll be at least 38 by the time he starts shooting this movie, which was Bale's age for Rises. They're not going young, rookie Batman. And people need to let go of this "Jake fits a rookie Batman" because it's like your mind is back in the last decade or at the most 5 years back. He doesn't have that vibe anymore. Nor does he have an old man Bruce vibe either. He fits the experienced, been around the block, but still young with no ending in sight Batman.

Have you seen the numbers? There's no chance in hell that the DCEU continues with a shared universe. It would be suicide. If they continue, they're the dumbest studio on the planet.

Well, it's because they're a dumb studio that it's hard to predict what they do.

Is he one of the greatest actors on the planet? I just watched Southpaw, very good film, and he did a great job in it but labeling him one of the greats is quite something! And Jake very much still has the young and youthful look in my eyes...I mean, good for him for looking so young, but he certainly doesn't look almost 40. I never knew I wanted an older, weathered looking batman on the screen until they did it. Perhaps I got sick of Bales "early in his career" Batman. And giving Bale a cane and a beard doesn't count.

I always thought Patrick Wilson was an inspired choice, but he's already in Aquaman. And i'm sure a comparison to being in Watchmen would prevent it from ever happening.

There shouldn't be a question in anyones mind after seeing his work in Nightcrawler, Stronger, Enemy and Prisoners. He is absolutely one of the greatest pure actors right now.

If your problem has to do with age, then i get it. I get that he doesn't look like he's in his 40's. But i don't agree that he looks 30 like Bale did in Batman Begins.

Locking anyone down who looks like they're in their 40's (probably because the actor would have to be in his 40's) will be impossible because Reeves wants a trilogy out of this guy. You have to think long term. Think about Jake's age and look once they roll into a second and third film.

Honestly, the only knock I'd have against Gyllenhaal is his rather youthful, boyish voice. But that's not some insurmountable obstacle to overcome.

Gyllenhaal looks his age and his age is right for a Batman that’s been active for a few years.

The only time his voice would be a problem is when he’s in the suit and I imagine they would alter in some way either way.

I'd rather they ditch the voice modulator, to be frank.

Surely Gyllenhaal can deepen his voice a bit.

For an older Bataman

Patrick Warburton

I think Reeves wants to tell his own Batman story without having to reference a wider DCEU, but that doesn't necessarily exclude that Batman from being used in the wider DCEU.

Let's say Matt Reeves makes a Batman movie with Jake Gyllenhaal. There are absolutely no mentions of Superman, Wonder Woman, Mother Boxes, Steppenwolf, or anything DCEU-related. That doesn't stop Gyllenhaal from appearing in a future Justice League movie. It simply means that Reeves' film can function as a complete stand-alone entity, while still being considered canon to the DCEU as a whole.

Could be done exactly the same way Man of Steel & Wonder Woman were both done, there are next to no references that suggest either of those are part of a wider universe. More relevant perhaps with WW as we already knew she was part of a wider universe when that hit, whereas with MoS making that the launching film for the DCEU seemed to be an afterthought.

Oh, right. The bat. The bat that crashed through my window, the bat chosen to symbolize my fear, Bruce's bat.

I think they could do something subtle but effective.
It doesn’t have to be deep and robotic like batfleck.

Yeah but WB already proved they were the dumbest studio on the planet when they let Snyder direct JL.

It would be weird hearing him yell as Batman and sounding like Joe/Puddy.

I saw both Prisoners and Nightcrawler, and they were very good films. He was good in Nightcrawler, but I only really remember Jackman in Prisoners so i'll have a re-watch.

Look, i'm totally open to him as Batman. I think my biggest concern with him in the role would be reverting back to the Bale type of Batman and i simply didn't care for it. I like the more fantastical element of the character. I have really enjoyed Affleck's interpretation of Bruce Wayne/Batman and had no trepidation when he was given the role for whatever reason. Its looking more likely that he won't get his solo film and that saddens me because I see great potential. Fortunately, the character has always been a draw for WB, so i'm happy knowing that will continue seeing more films.

I know what you're saying. I've seen people saying he would make a good Robin or Batman Beyond. It really is as if some people can't shake the image of certain actors being in their 20s, even when they're nearing 40.

I like the irony of Welliver being a Batman movie without Affleck.

Younger Batman now mean a younger Selina and Dent

I don’t think Jake G. looks old enough to believably play a seasoned Batman (i.e. a version of the character who’s been operating for at least a decade) without makeup, but it wouldn’t be appropriate to portray him as a beginner either. I’d say he’s comfortably in the “Batman: Year Five” wheelhouse.

Bruce Wayne/Batman- Jake Gyllenhaal
Commissioner James "Jim" Gordon- J.K. Simmons
Alfred Pennyworth- Jeremy Irons
Selina Kyle/Catwoman- Eiza Gonzalez
The Joker- Jared Leto

Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze- Ralph Fiennes
