The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

If Riddler were to come back in this film series what would his motivation be? He didn't get to kill Bruce Wayne obviously but would that be enough of a reason to bring him back.

I also wouldn't mind seeing some of Riddlers followers in the Penguin show. Just because 500 people (give or take) is a large enough number for them to all dissappear at once, but also a small enough number that you could deal with them In a line or two of dialogue. Maybe have Penguin kill a few.

I’m glad Riddler is alive and in Arkham and would like to see him stay there throughout at least the next film contributing to a couple of scenes from within. I love seeing villains interact and there should be more chance of that on this show with Batman having a proper no-kill rule.

Tbf, 500 could be worldwide followers. That website or whatever may not necessarily be Gotham exclusive and the 10-15 or so that showed up sounds about right in terms of who would be in Gotham

After seeing the film which Villains are you guys definitely not expecting to see.

I feel like Hush was teased and the idea that his father was maybe kinda killed by Bruce's works and gives Bruce a reason to factor into the next film more but an Orphan trying to kill Wayne because of his father was basically this film.

Two-Face also seems not as likely as we just had the DA die and it may seem repetitive. I wouldn't mind Harvey showing up as just a friend albeit with a dark side and we only get Two-Face teased but I'm probably alone in that.

I was back and forth on Court Of Owls but after seeing the film I definitely don't want them, I feel like Falcone being ultimately behind the corruption works well enough, and having Penguin fighting against other mob bosses for control of the city is compelling enough without a secret society.

In BTAS he’s always up to some scheme that amuses him, and he does it in the hopes someone notices how clever it is and engages him on it. He never seems to dwell on being thwarted much, he just moves onto the next thing.

I imagine this guy being a techy info-scrubber he’ll find some other random secret or cover-up (probably anti-elites in some way since that’s his thing in this universe) and he’ll kidnap/kill people involved and taunt the cops/Batman again. He’s usually quite a predictable guy, always so wrapped up in how clever he and his plans are that he can’t help but overlook how he’ll get caught. It’s actually an amusing paradoxical trope I like about the character.

Yeah you make a good point, I guess the flood is a good enough reminder of what he accomplished and I'm sure regardless he and his name will pop up again.

I think the Court of Owls seems to make the most sense given how this movie panned out. They’re kind of like the High Table in John Wick. The events of this movie were too small time for them to get involved, it was rearranging the furniture on the Titanic. The renewal fund of a few billion dollars is tiny for them.

But if bigger things get uncovered they come into play. It’s be fascinating to see this Bruce Wayne engage with them approaching him to be a member while he investigates them as Batman. I get your reservations though, but I think they could be done in a compelling way.

Personally, though, I would love an adaptation of Heart of Ice in this universe, preferably with another from the rogue’s gallery being partially responsible for Nora’s condition.

I guess I just don't want another corruption plot to be the focus in general, I feel like it was covered pretty thoroughly and IF they were to be used I think a little "This is only the surface" type thing should have been done beforehand

Villains I DON'T expect to see in this world: Poison Ivy, Court of Owls, Clayface, Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Mr Freeze

Villains I expect to see/possible villains: Two-Face, Hugo Strange, Hush, Bane (possible), Black Mask (possible), Victor Zsasz (maybe a follower of Joker), Jeremiah Arkham, Harley Quinn, Mad Hatter

I'm not saying I definitely think ALL of these characters will appear, but these are the characters I could see existing in this world. I know Matt said he finds Mr Freeze interesting but I just don't see how you can make a grounded/realistic take on it without stripping away the fantastical elements, which takes away from the character itself. But if there is anyone that could make a grounded take on Mr Freeze, Matt is definitely the man for the job

Yeah, I agree completely. I think they’d be able to backtrack enough to include them logically, but it’s not my first choice. A secret society picking off people who get in the way of their plans using an augmented assassin I’m game for, but something other than corporate corruption would be best.

In a way they’re kind of limited. Doing another serial killer like Calendar Man or Zsaz would be repetitive, and so would any undiscovered corruption angles. My vote would go to the best source material interpretations of rogues we haven’t seen in a while, like Freeze or Ivy. I imagine any of the supernatural ones are out and more serial killers are out too.

This is the spoiler thread so I assume I can freely talk about The Joker tease here?

Anyway... I loved what I saw there. He was manipulative, creepy, and looked monstrous in his physical appearance (what we could see, anyway). It looked like the actor playing him was also done up in makeup and prosthetics like Colin Farrell was as Penguin.

With Reeves treating Batman will all of the respect… every villain should end up in Arkham. Unless of course they commit suicide or another villain kills them.

The last Pattinson movie should be him trapped in Arkham, going up against all the villains he’s put in there himself over the years.

THE BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM

Hearing ideas like this just makes me hope that Matt and Rob stay signed on for more than a trilogy. I want a Batman franchise. Give us 5 films. Make it the definitive Batman. I know it's a lot to ask but imagine Matt doing 5 films. I feel like no one would touch this character again for a long time if Matt makes 5 movies.

I know they are not connected, but I could really see Robbie's Harley Quinn in this universe

That’s an interesting take but it basically becomes an Elseworld’s version of Freeze. He’s not generally some weird freak, he’s actually one of the few villains who isn’t a nutjob. He’s so tunnel-visioned on saving Nora he’ll kill to do it, but he isn’t crazy. A Freeze that’s basically a predator killing other women to save a frozen woman he develops feelings for is quite a departure.

I really hope they don’t deviate so far from characters’ general portrayals just in service of “grounding” the movie. There were more than enough indications that technology is sufficiently advanced to do most villains as they appear in source material.

Can’t disagree there

From what I picked up I think the technology in this universe is a shade up from Nolan’s, so I think BTAS/Arkham style villains will fit if they choose to go that route.

In that interpretation I gave, I never said he was crazy but did crazy things, if you will, like trials on other women, to see what he can get away with... like you said, tunnel vision.

I liked the small touch where Bruce's eyes hurt due to the sunlight that he had to wear sunglasses

I wish we saw more of the terminal. We got one sweeping shot when we first see it and then we don't see much of it later

I'm surprised we didn't a heroic suit up scene. It's funny how many times the movie shifted from Batman to Bruce

Batman in the iceberg lounge

Goes outside as drifter Bruce to chase Selina

Becomes Batman again.

He worked with Batman at Riddlers apartment. We should deputize him as a Robin. :D

I liked how they went 'casino royal' on us... they didn't dot he cliche batman tropes, but instead showed them in different ways... this didn't feel like a comic book movie - heroic suit up is cliche and wasn't needed... I also liked how when Bats was hanging on, about to be shot, he just looked back at him echoing he wasn't scared to die.

I’d agree. Was so good that I wanted more each time and some of them felt over a little too quickly.

Leave them wanting more. I clapped one time where int he third he gets back up through the smoke.. it was cool.

Anyone else think it was interesting how the Cat thief thing was done? She only stole twice in the film (I think) and one was for her friend and another because of a fairly legitimate right to the cash.

It made her a lot more interesting then just stealing because she wanted too.
she stole because she had to, at that moment... she's obviously done it before.. her skill set shows this... the tools she used, but, again, looks like she steals wha sthe has to, it showed she wasn't just a thief.

He's the new gold standard man.

I really don't scare easy with films, but Dano really petrified me with his Riddler. Then when he was having his meltdown with Batman at Arkham and those sounds he made, he was very chilling.

Loved every bit of the Riddler and that they called him that in story.

His first reveal was scary and gruesome.

Just to clarify... he didn't know bruce was batman, but assumed bruce was one everyone's hit list?

One of my favorite moments was in the first crime scene Batman noticing the blood mark and the crime scene photographer photographing it after looking at him with bewilderment and being impressed.
I loved how Batman was so reserved and almost numb to it all... it wasn't at all heroic but it was very powerful... how they made it work, for him to be there, accepted, but not liked, worked well... it didn't look stupid... like... bale I found around the police in that station didn't work... it was like cosplay... Reeves def made a better move for me, then Nolan.

going for a second viewing monday. can't wait to see some scenes that i think might end up in my top 10 live-action batman moments. the 3 riddle bomb with colson and arkham conversation are one of them.

I wouldn’t do Court of Owls as corruption but as a group who sees where things are going and doesn’t think Batman can stop it. A secret society who thinks they can do what the Renewal project couldn’t.

More like Born Again with him overwhelmed on both sides of his identity.

So it challenges Batman to step up his game but it also allows the story to introduce a couple of smaller villains as a signal of things to come.

Yes, I’ve been saying the same. A standard trilogy isn’t enough. I’m way more greedy and unreasonable than that! 5 or bust! :funny:

Seriously can’t imagine the depth of a Reeves Gotham continuing to cast characters so well and getting that much time to cement all the building blocks and then going to town amongst all that.

I think having Pattinson on for as long as he wants to be is gonna be for the best. He really seems like he wants to portray the characters for years to come, and even though I think we should focus on it being a trilogy for now, I'd love for him to be signed on for more.

No director would ever sign on for 5 films. They want to be able to do their own films as well and these big films are 2-3 years of their lives.

I’m fine with a trilogy as long as they tread new ground and not just do another Joker story ending with a Batman retirement.

Anyone else notice the one conversation inserted just to pass the Bechdel test? You can say the Selina and Anika call passes it but in order to leave no confusion or people trying to talk technicalities, they introduced Carla via the ID system at the iceberg lounge and have Selina and her talk for 3 sentences about Anika.

There's literally no point to the scene and we find out nothing we didn't already know, the only reason for the existence of that scene is to prevent the people who ***** about the Bechdel test from saying it doesn't pass.
