The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

I mean is it so odd that a a twenty something guy with a lot of tragedy in his life might act out against a parental figure? I mean seems right on point to me.

The surrogate father bit always ruined me wrong to be honest.

I have mixed feelings about Alfred.

On one hand, his role and presence in the movie is a bit disappointing.

On the other hand, Reeves sets up very well his character, for backstory and for the future.

Alfred is not a butler but he was something like the bodyguard of Thomas.
And just like Bruce he regrets he couldn't save him.
Then he raised him seeing his rage and his pain (that Alfred felt too) and trying to educate him to control it with discipline and action. But Bruce needed a father.

So Alfred regrets too that Bruce risks his life and wants to die. He thinks his life was a failure.

Making Alfred an action man, Reeves solved many problems for the future movies: he can build their relationship not just as a conflict bigger and bigger.

To me, that was a problem for Nolan's Alfred, who lead him in to a cul-de-sac.

With Alfred being an ex soldier, he can be Bruce's moral compass caring his life but he can also be a supporter to him (I hope in a less random way than in this movie... Alfred seemed my grandma with crosswords LOL) without being annoying or boring.

Does anyone remember hearing the "if you are justice, please do not lie" line? I don't recall it in the film.

Was I correct in thinking that the silver darts on his gauntlets were the long range grapples that he used once on the way up through the window to riddlers apartment? I remember the grapple piece was silver and big at that part

I don’t mean to butt in, but I think that moment is pretty much when the riddler goon is unmasked and says “I’m vengeance”. At that point it seems Bruce comes to a realization of sorts that being “vengeance” wasn’t the path he should take to make a real difference. After all, the riddler came about because of him being Batman, and the goons came about due to riddler. Seems like a trickling down effect which all stems from Batman operating the way he did.
.

The idea that by the end of the film Batman realises that:

vengeance = Gotham City worse.

help and hope = Gotham City better.

…is a beautiful resolution.

So just saw The Batman for the second time. Still a 10/10 A+ film. My only tiny gripe is I didn’t really care much for the Falcone/Wayne stuff in the second act. It was still great but I much preferred the first and third acts.

Everybody was amazing. Pattinson is my new favorite Batman. Farrell absolutely ate up the screen in his limited time. Can’t wait to see him in the sequel. Zoe, Paul, Andy, and Jeffrey all did amazing with their screen time.

My favorite scenes after the second time are the car chase, the fight at the garden, and the Joker scene.

This time I tried to pay even more attention to the Joker scene and I still think his voice and laugh are great. His face looks absolutely mangled. Like it looks like an open wound on his mouth and when he smiles you can see teeth you aren’t supposed to see. I still couldn’t decide if his skin is bleached but his hair on the second viewing looks less spiked and more just wild looking.

Quick question, does anybody know what the car for the Batmobile is? It looks so badass with that ****ing rocket engine on the back.

…perfect mix of vampire and the man with no name/Dirty Harry.

YES. Also I forget to mention this in my post but the score by Giacchio was so good. Especially his theme for any time Batman appeared on screen. Sounded very western like.

It kind of reminded me of The Mandolorians theme. Honestly Batman and The Mandlorian have some similarities.

Was also really great how often Reeves focused on the way everyone else saw Batman. The cops starting, slack jawed. The chase scene was dark and hard to see, so the audience could feel Penguins terror at being chased by Batman.

And one of those final shots, of Batman with the flare in the water, looking at the terrified people. When we see how the trapped people look at him, he's like a literal devil. Pointy ears, red lighting from the flare etc. But after he helps and leads them to safety, he's like Moses crossing the red sea.

LOVED so many of those moments.

Does anyone remember hearing the "if you are justice, please do not lie" line? I don't recall it in the film.

It's one of the three riddles Riddler poses to Gil Colson as the bomb strapped to his throat's counting down.
Yep, the one about the bribes. Something like, "If you are justice, please do not lie. What was the price for your blind eye?"

Just listened to The Big Picture’s interview of Matt… this guy, he truly loves Batman so much.

Did anyone clock which track from the score played over the first portion of the end credits? I know "Sonata in Darkness" came over the later portion, but I'm not sure what the first part was.

I believe it's "Escaped Crusader" around the 1:30 mark.

Were there any hints on Riddler intending to flood Gotham? I feel it came out of nowhere.

I only recall there were mentions of the dead mayor built a dam or something.

Great film.

Some random points:

Dat Entrance into the square in the third act was the perfect batman moment and the greatest visual of the film *chef's kiss* 10/10 moment.

Like in Begins, TDK, and BvS we see Bat's saving another kid that most likely won't be robin (but we can dream).

Was Eddy, our riddler boy hinted to be Batman's brother or I'm reading too much into stuff?

Our boy Gordon was all defending Bruce like "Just Lemmy try the high risk ?????? reward here for a min really quick"

Cheesy cliche moment: "If you kill him you'll become just like him" heard yet again.

Also the Joker teasing was a bit of a mood ruiner. you gotta shove in the sequel teases...

Alfred can't recognize a bomb letter unless its beeping right in his face, lol.

Noir dark moody detective film achieved. A batman film hasn't feel so much like a batman film since the Burton era.

Car chase was delightful.

Fight scenes were very well shot, but not too impressive choreographically. Bats felt too much like just a dude in them, which I guess was the intent.

Those twins are the twins from desperate housewives? we needed some more iconic or weirder minions.

Clear character arch, nice. I loved the moment where the riddler follower guy (the father of the Russian girl??) said "I´m vengeance" Nice clarity moment for Bruce and his impact on the city.

Phenomenal, wow. Thank you Matt Reeves.

I am buzzing. This was probably the most excited I'd been for a comic book movie since Endgame and it blew me away.

Pattinson - wow. Any haters/doubters should be silenced after this. Already my favorite take on Batman in live action. Zoe played Selina so well, Dano was perfectly creepy as the Riddler and Farrell stole the show as Oz.

Where do we think they go with the sequel? Obviously the Joker was teased (which, I'm still a little indifferent one at the moment) and Hush was teased as well as Penguin still looming large.

I really hope we see Hush and I know Reeves has interest in bringing Mr Freeze into this world, too.

Movie was great! The first half hour was pretty unconventional for a blockbuster.

I thought the less fleshed out character was Selina, all seemed unstable, her friends death and her reaction to it was a bit flat.

And as some of you said, that Joker cameo at the end was nothing more than disappointing, I love riddler's reaction when he see his plan fail but Barry's voice and laugh just wasn't good. Even his hair seemed parodic.

I don't know, after hearing that maniacal Joaquin Phoenix laugh it's pretty hard to top it.

And it just takes you out of the movie, making it more like any other conventional movie trying to plant seed just for the sake of it.

I loved it so much! I still need to get to grips with everything but it was perfect. People have complained about the runtime but I could've watched more. It was so well crafted, I can't wait to see more. I hope all the same crew return in the future because every element was integral to what made this film so great. Every cast member was great, down to the smallest of roles.

Off the top of my head, the opening scene was fantastic. I especially loved when Mitchell moved and Riddler was standing right behind him. Just great. Gotham was beautiful. Bruce's voiceover was such a great touch, particularly when he's describing the state of Gotham and we were shown how much the criminals were scared of the signal, and that you didn't know what shadow he was going to step out of.

I loved the club sequences, especially when Batman first meets Penguin and Selena, and even more so when he had Selena go in with his contact lens camera, so well done. The Batmobile chase was incredible - in my IMAX screening you could literally feel every aspect of it.

The Joker sequence was great. A sequel tease, sure? For all we know that could be part of something bigger than just Joker's appearance that'll happen in the future. I don't think it confirms that Joker is the next villain. Maybe the third? But anyway, I think it was a good way to signal that this isn't over, There are still villains out there, sitting in Arkham or wherever, waiting for their time to shine, and I like the interaction between him and Riddler, which reminded of how the Rogues Gallery interact in the comics and animated series. Riddler didn't get the friendship he wanted with Batman, so I guess Joker's the next best thing.

Again, I loved everything about this film. The story, the cast, the crew, the execution. So much more to talk about. Like I said I'm still getting to grips with it all and who knows? I may have some nitpicks over time, maybe, but as of right now, it was so perfect and I haven't had an experience like this watching a film in so long. I can't wait to see it again.

Matt Reeves, I love you.
