The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

If Zsasz ever shows up, he had better just be a damned serial killer. I don’t know why movies and TV shows keep making him a mob hit man. Maybe they did that in the comics at some point but Zsasz is much more effective as a guy with no pattern who kills anyone and then positions their bodies as if they are still alive.

Zsasz seems like he would make quite a good addition to this Arkham/GCPD series they’re planning to do.

I doubt they’ll include him in a major film story since the serial killer thing has been done with Riddler, but he’s a good character.

Just watched this movie and I loved the crime/drama/thriller and detective noir elements of it. Just when I thought the movie was slowing down it went to the flood/arena sequence.

It was the Lord of the Rings of The Batman movies. Pattinson, Reeves and Paul Dano hit a home run. Great score, great pace, great action, great cast - Zoe, Ferrell and Jeffrey were great as their characters as well. Definitely my favorite interpretation of the character and definitely a top 10 CBM, perhaps top 5.

Looking forward to round 2.

Watched Batman: Hush to get a better idea of the character (I admittedly don't know a whole lot about him) and I can easily see the natural progression he would bring in the sequel.

Seems like an easy fit following the first film

The animated movie was nothing like the comic story at all.

I'm surprised some people are still debating on whether Riddler knew Bruce was Batman or not. It's literally shown how he doesn't know.

Yes. In the beginning of the Arkham interrogation Riddler talks like he know Batman = Bruce Wayne

Batman gets tense and looks at the security camera. Then as the riddler continues talking you see he doesn’t know

“Ohhhhhh. Bruce Wayne. He’s the only one that got away”

Batman in his head- Oh. He doesn’t know. Good.

You gotta check the comics, if possible. Thomas Elliot's origins are way sinister and completely disturbing. The extent of his obsession is also very shocking.

I believe if they ever adapted his real background 1:1, this alone would already turn a movie PG-15/16 just from the childhood sickening sequences.

In a way, it's a type of sicko that could work from a "Fincheresque" angle, too. Fits well.

The animation is really just a watered down version of the character.merged with Riddler, basically.

Forgot to mention this earlier, but was there any reference to the cops easing up on Batman after he punches Gordon? I can't remember if there's a specific piece of dialogue or if something happened that would result in them looking the other way. I don't remember thinking about it during the film, so my brain feels blurry on it.

Exactly. I'm surprised some people have missed that haha. Or maybe these sites just want clicks.

i'm listening to the sountrack now after having seen the movie.

this track:

did this track play during the end credits?
i forget.

I highly doubt most of these clickbait websites understand the nuance of what's actually happening in these films. All they want is to put summaries and explanations so when people Google those questions, their website will come up.

That said, I'm not sure what else the movie could've done to make you understand Riddler never made the connection. They practically spoonfed it to you. The point of the scene was to mak you think Riddler knew, and Batman thought he was going to expose him, only for it to be a reversal.

The problem is Batman was too f'n dumb to figure out any of Riddler's plans. He was always a step behind.

I definitely plan to and I know a little bit about the character already. Just thought the animated movie was a good starting point since it was available on HBO Max.

I still could easily see the character being adapted in this universe

Hush is a just terrible comic, I think there’s probably something neat to be done with the character though. I’ve heard Paul Dini did a few great comics with him.

I recall liking Heart of Hush. For my money, Hush is like the Court of Owls - though at least Court of Owls had a pretty great six issue intro before it dropped off. The appeal is less in the specifics of what they were in the comics and more the core concept and iconography that a talented writer/director could use to mold them into something really memorable.

I’m a big Scott Snyder fan but the climax is a big old.. oh, okay that’s what we’re doing huh?

I love the Court but I’m glad the corruption was more grounded here.

Yeah, those first six issues are very good stuff - particularly Batman in the maze, but the second volume is... a lot. A lot of things I would ideally like to not make it into an adaptation that might come by. But those masks are a fantastic visual and I hope to see them show up in an adaptation one day, just probably not this one as we already did the whole "wow, city's really corrupt" story.

Falcone's line about him taking everything he knows to his grave to me felt like we were only scratching the surface of the secrets bubbling even beneath Gotham's underworld.

I could just be reading into it. But I dunno. The themes of corruption I think are what made this version feel particularly relevant to today's world more than anything. I'd hate to see that get dropped in favor of doing regular ol' villain team ups. I think there has to be some sort of overarching narrative here.

Damn... looks like Barton wasn't involved with the Arkham stuff. It seems like he picked off where Terence Winter left and developed the originally pitched GCPD Year One story, but now that project has been shelved. Bummer. I was really looking forward to it. It also largely looks like it was WB's decision to cut that series...

Ah man that's really unfortunate. At least it sounds like the Penguin show is pretty deep into development

As much as I was excited for that, and it's a shame it got canned, I do think the arkham show (and obviously the penguin show), have the potential to be something different and fresh instead of being compared to Gotham. The whole idea of a haunted house horror series set in arkham raises so many possibilities.

The animated film portrays him as a totally different character. Literally lol.
