Screw Cyborg. People are not going to suddenly turn a every black superhero movie into a hit. It doesn't work like that. There's nothing aspirational about Cyborg. He's a depressed eunuch. Why would black people want to overly celebrate a character like Cyborg. Just because he's black? It doesn't work like that. Black Panther is aspirational in every way possible. A King.

DC has a near-equivalent to Black Panther in Mr Terrific, but they are sort of too stupid to realise it. Michael Holt is a self-made billionaire, the third smartest man in the world, and incredible fighter, a former Chairman of the Justice Society. Respected by Batman as an equal in mind and body. Mr Terrific is as aspirational as Black Panther. In some ways moreso for African-Americans, because he's American and fufills the notion of American exceptionalism. Wheras Black Panther is great, but as an African King, almost a fantasy figure to most black Americans.

And unlike Cyborg, Mr Terrific still has a functioning penis, and can make love to Power Girl when he feels like it.

I would argue that T'Challa as an African King is more attractive than Michael Holt, who is another billionaire and there's plenty of that in the comics already. Plus Wakanda as an African nation who has never been colonized and is the most advanced in the world is pretty much a character in itself, as evident by the movie. Black Panther gives African-Americans pride for their homeland, as what might have been even though it's fantasy, but from what I've heard it's still very inspirational none the less. Btw, Mr. Terrific as a superhero name is a bit...campy. It could affect people's perception of him.

Friday, 8:58PM: Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther is now looking at the sixth best opening of all-time, based on 3-days, with an estimated $185.4M per industry projections and a mind-blowing $212.1M over four days.

On a three-day all-time chart, Black Panther is just above Captain America: Civil War ($179.1M). Remember that Fandango’s advance ticket sales out of the gate back in January in their first 24 hours indicated that T’Challa was beating Cap. While Black Panther is under Avengers: Age of Ultron on the 3-day all-time openers list ($191.2M), it’s beating the sequel’s four-day run ($204.4M). We hear from Screen Engine/ComScore that PostTrak is showing that 40% of Black Panther‘s ticket sales are being driven by African American moviegoers.

How many self made black billionaires can you name in superhero comics? Michael Holt is the only one I can think of. He stands out for that. Most prominent African-American superheroes have origins in "the hood" (Luke Cage, Falcon, John Stewart, Black Lightning etc). Or maybe the were mid-level scientists or something. Michael Holt being a genius billionaire is not the same as Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne being genius billionaires. It makes a similar social statement about the potential of young black men that Black Panther does.

But having black kids see a African-American superhero that made himself a billionaire? Invented his own tech (I disliked that in the movie they downplayed T'Challa's intellect and inventive genius to give Shuri a more specific role as tech wiz). I agree that Wakanda is inspirational, but Michael Holt feels even more tangible.

I don't think Mr Terrific is any more a campy a name than Dr Strange. If the character looks cool (and he does) and works on screen, I don't think people will care one iota if his name is supposed to be cool or not.

So both boys and girls can see positive role models. It's a gain, not a loss.

Insane numbers, just insane, MCU is gonna hit at least 3 billion this year.

They could still have acknowledged that T'Challa could have done/invented all that stuff himself, but he was just too busy. A quick line could have cleared that up, and still allowed Shuri to have her tech wiz status. Instead, it felt a bit Chris Nolan-y, where he had Batman lose most of his intellect and just rely on Lucious Fox to supply him military grade contraband weapons and vehicles.

Got no problem with Shuri filling the inventor/tech role, but they should have let it be known that T'Challa could do it himself if neccesary.

It got a A+ Cinemascore, first since Avengers. The legs are gonna be crazy of this one.

Black billionaires may be rare, but the King of a nation is even rarer in the comic world, whether black or white or any other ethnicity. I don't mind seeing Mr. Terrific on the big screen (even though I still think his name isn't all that), because he would give young black kids a role model to look up to. I just don't think WB will ever give him a solo movie, even though they were rumored to be considering a Booster Gold movie (who is probably as well known as Mr. Terrific).

It's probably that T'Challa might be a trillionaire, if you look at what the US GDP is, and showing what the technological capability of the Wakandan's are it's quite possible that their economy could rival the U.S. considering the vibranium reserves.

Either way he's easily the richest person in the MCU. Sorry Tony. :(

I think T'Challa could be richer than anybody in the DC universe as well. To have an African holding the title as the wealthiest person in the comic world is a pretty cool achievement.

T'Challa designed the Civil War suit.

1..) Black Panther (DIS), 4,020 theaters / $76.6M Fri (includes $25.2M in previews) /3-day: $187.6M /4-day: $216M/Wk 1

The numbers are so much better than anyone could have guessed!

All the benchmarks are coming back with great results. If something opening this big managed to have any semblance of legs then it’s going to be an absolute monster.

i really hated how they made batman seem like a dummy in that series.

i'd rather see Blade and Spawn reboots. Also, DC would be better off going with John Stewart GL over cyborg.

Well, Batman spent a year investigating Superman in BVS and yet it was Lex Luthor who figured out Superman's secret identity, not Batman. And he's supposed to be the seasoned detective and not a Year One Batman. Not much smarter than the TDK trilogy.

BvS Batman was an outright dumbass!
