I think the size of the heat beams has more to do with the emotion behind it. Zod's was fueled by hate. Pure rage. CLark's is more controlled and focused. He's taken the time to hone it and can even temper it down to do something as gentle as cauterize Lois' injury.
That said ,,I think Clark is totally capable of emitting that huge of a blast. If he needed to.

I don't think he's bowing to him. I think he's either dealing with kryptonite or he's been depowered

If there is a duplicate I could see that being a bow and in the future we see the duplicate making people bow to him just as he was forced to bow to Luthor. That look might be the duplicate getting tired of Alex's BS.

In the trailer when Lois is talking to Superman you can see it's night and in the background behind Supes there is the Washington Monument. So, perhaps this hearing is a dragged out affair taking a few days, as it would be in real life. So it may be a backdrop if you will for the plot. The finale may happen even before the hearings close so the thrust will be that Superman at a time when he is under deep scrutiny proves his hero bona fides by again saving the world from the machinations of another super villain.

You're right. It definitely looks like a heat vision though, just much larger. I think this is our biggest clue to who or what the Trinity is fighting. I believe it narrows it down to Bizarro or Amazo, or some reanimated, cybernetic general Zod version of them. Technically Zod-Metallo combination. Doomsday doesn't have a heat vision, right?

I don't think it will be Bizarro. Snyder said that they were toying with the idea of Superman vs Brainiac before he said Batman but they decided against it because they didn't want to do another alien invasion. If they are aware of repeating themselves I don't see them going with another evil Kryptonian...even if it's a clone.

Here's a couple new theories I've been mulling over.

1. Supes could be kneeling before Lex as a ploy. If Superman wants to gain the element of surprise on Lex in order to stop something Luthor's doing, what better way than pretending to cave?

Picture it: Lex has some device that will cause a disaster (natural or unnatural). He tells Supes the only way to stop him is to give himself up to Lex, for live experimentation? (mirroring the choice to give himself up to Zod in MoS). Supes says okay. But then pulls out the look of rage on Lex and kicks his ass. Unlike with Zod, he has a plan and beats the villain on his terms, not the villain's.

It could be a ploy...that seems to be the same scene where he's talking about...God vs man....black and blue...day vs night....
He could be monologuing

Theory 2: what if the final act is the trinity rescuing Aquaman? If AM is being caught in that underwater scene, it's possible.

Picture it: Lex is obsessed with aliens and wants their technology. Perhaps because he's secretly sick/bald and thinks alien tech can cure him. So he experiments on Zod, and tortures Supes with the idea of getting Supes to be his ultimate, live, experiment.

In the meantime, as that plan is hatched, he's kidnapped metas like killer Croc, Enchantress, and Aquaman. The plot is discovered by the trinity (maybe WW is researching the disappearances?). They storm the complex. It's in the desert. It's guarded by S soldiers. Lex has them there to make it look like Supes is building a meta army by kidnapping these super beings.

The trinity destroys the place, AM is freed, and Killer Croc and Enchantress go off to jail, and SS. This is how Waller considers Supes a magnet for the metas.

In Man of Steel, Clark had pure rage against Faora and Nam-Ek when they held him down and he still only managed to spit out a heat vision that's roughly the same size as his eyes. I think it has to do with having pure uncontrolled and raw power. That being said, if that is Superman, I have to believe that he is under mind control since that's really the only time where he's that unhinged.

You have to stop thinking about the comics. You've seen this Superman unhinged...when he grabbed Zod for threatening his mother.

They showed that he had some pretty precise control of his heat vision in MOS. He could use it to simply heat up a door knob and make it invisible and only light his eyes up a bit as a child, be accurate enough to cauterize Lois' wound and to of course blast Faora and Nam-Ek or slice through the controls of the Scout Ship.
