The Clinton Thread II - Part 2

Yes, but they shouldn't have been missed in the first investigation of the E-mails.
I don't think that's how these things work...
He hasn't implied any wrongdoing, if people choose to read into that then that is on them. He's just saying they overlooked something in the first investigation and now they are going to look at it...instead we get people overreacting from both sides.
It doesn't matter if he's implied wrongdoing. He knows damn well what any statement regarding this would do with the MSM headlines of putting a guilty spotlight on Hillary again. Especially 10 days before the election, and to get solid proof of anything, wrongdoing or not, could take weeks or months. He basically found no incriminating info, and just let out the fish line of "oh we found more emails" for news media to interpret it however they want. He's got no solid evidence of ANYTHING, and even the DOJ advised against it, because there was nothing solid, and releasing half-a$$ed stuff like this can very well influence an election.

If the FBI shot from the hip on something that could sink Trump everyone would be lauding their commitment to the law. Relative morality has becoming rather tiresome.

This is how hyper partisan things have gotten that an FBI director cannot simply state that they are reopening an investigation in light of new materials that became available in a separate investigation without people losing their minds on the left and the right. Hillary and her campaign were singing him praises a month ago saying how unpartisan he was and how well he conducted the investigation now they are throwing a fit. This is ridiculous. How many people in here actually read the letter before commenting on it?

E-mails notwithstanding I'd say there's a very real chance that Huma or perhaps HC might have perjured themselves during their previous FBI interviews with this new information coming to light (conjecture on my part)... bottom line is Comey's investigators were alerted to something by the people who were already running the Wiener investigation.

There has to be something there for Comey to pull such a drastic move. I just can't imagine a guy as smart and principled as he appears to be would attempt career suicide like this over nothing.

Look, if this were McCain vs Obama, you could argue that both sides are hypocrites and we shouldn't care so much about these controversies.

But we're talking about helping an authoritarian, extremist neofascist become leader of the free world.

It's not the time to pad ourselves on the back for a bipartisan worldview.

Except of course he broke protocol. So calling him principled is laughable. But then again you want Hillary caught in something so bad you like to roll with this BS.

Yes I have read the letter. It just comes across as a guy who had to begrudgingly let Hillary off the hook because they couldn't find anything, and now that something new came up that so far hasn't provided any incriminating info, he just jumping hook, line and sinker to throw it out there, in the name of un-partisanship. What's the point of throwing this out there now, with 10 days left. Literally nothing can be done except let news medias spin this out of control. There's no way they can do a thorough investigation of this in under 10 days and let everyone know, nothing came up after all. It's going to take at least a few weeks. There is nothing substantial to be accomplished right now aside from giving outlets material to feed on to sway the election one way or another.

In just a matter of days Hillary went from a nine point lead to a 2 point nailbiter.

But Liberals are overreacting?

This letter should not have been sent within 60 days of the general election. That's a long held FBI tradition for a damn good reason.

There's a world of difference making a legal announcement relating to a presidential candidate 4 or 5 months before the general election and doing it 11 days prior.

I think you'd find it tough to see anything remotely questioning Comey's credentials no matter where you look online... even from the left. Obviously he's tarnished that "boyscout" reputation of his now.

I'm not advocating what he did nor am I condemning it.

I know people around here like to rush to judge anyone who is critical of HC as some right wing trump supporting lunatic. But, the fact of the matter is I'd be the happiest person on the planet if we had 2 totally different candidates running for president right now.

...that way we could at least find some time to talk about important issues instead of who is the bigger dumpster fire of the two candidates.

This isn't an issue. That is the point. You want to make it an issue, which says it all.

James Comey said:
Given that we don’t know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails, I don’t want to create a misleading impression.
Except he just did. He knew damn well what he was doing. By releasing this statement, he created this impression.

Case in point:

FBI Director James Comey Knew The Risks With His Clinton Letter. Trump Just Showed Them.

Less than 24 hours after Comey tried to calm nerves at the FBI, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump proved his fears to be justified and raised additional questions about why he went public in the first place.
Speaking at a rally in Golden, Colorado, Trump made a series of apparent mischaracterizations or uninformed assertions about the state of the FBI investigation and law enforcement in general that will only muddy the waters further about this 11th hour campaign development.

It started with Trump’s blanket claim that the newly discovered emails ― found, apparently, on a computer that belonged to former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), the estranged husband of longtime Clinton aide Huma Abedin ― proved his Democratic rival was “guilty” of… something.

The newly discovered emails do not support such a claim. Indeed, no one is entirely sure what the emails say. There are reportedly more than a thousand of them. But those reports also say that many may be duplicates of ones the FBI has already investigated. It’s not entirely clear, additionally, whether the emails originated from Clinton herself, Abedin or neither.

Trump also insisted that because the FBI had announced that investigators were looking into the emails, it had to be that the material they’d discovered was massive in scope and scandal. “Now the evidence is so overwhelming ― because they wouldn’t have done this unless the evidence was overwhelming,” he said.

But all that Comey revealed on Friday was that the emails the FBI had discovered appeared “to be pertinent to the [earlier] investigation.”
Agents aren’t even sure what emails are on Weiner’s computer, it’s been reported. And Comey himself wrote that the FBI could not assess whether the material “may be significant.”

Trump didn’t stop there. Though no one actually knows what will be found on the device, he still speculated about what was there.

Trump again says the Weiner emails are part of the 30k lost emails. There's no evidence of this as of yet

He admitted, at one point, that he had no knowledge to assert that Comey had made his announcement because there was dissatisfaction within his ranks. But Trump made the assertion anyway. “There was a revolt and I can be pretty sure of it,” he said.

Trump also seized on reports that Comey’s decision to write to Congress went against the recommendation of Attorney General Loretta Lynch to claim that the Department of Justice was biased against him.

“Now the Attorney General is fighting the FBI, because the FBI finally did what was right,” he said. “The Department of Justice is trying so hard to protect Hillary.”

But Lynch’s efforts to dissuade Comey from going public didn’t have to do with protecting Clinton so much as trying to uphold a longstanding DoJ practice of not interfering in campaigns so close to election day. If anything, Comey appears to have acted roguely in this instance, with numerous career and non-career justice officials expressing shock with his decision to make a public pronouncement 11 days before people vote.
That didn’t stop Trump from speculating, of course.

“There are those, and I happen to be one of them, who think Hillary Clinton offered Loretta Lynch a reappointment,” he said. This claim might be less dubious than the others, however, since The New York Times has reported that Clinton is considering retaining Lynch at the DOJ.

For good measure, Trump compared the American system of justice to what one would find in a developing nation, adding that “in terms of our judicial system, this is the lowest point in the history of our country.”

It says in the letter that the FBI is unsure if the emails show Hillary broke the law.

This letter that changed the course of the election basically says "there's a few more emails we're going to look at".

Why break the 60 day rule just to say that? The DOJ told him to reconsider because of the timing so he fully knew it was an October surprise.

Maybe this guy isn't a bipartisan beacon of fairness. Maybe he wants Trump to win.

Stranger things have happened.

Both parties nominated their weakest candidate for president for some reason. Everyone who voted in the primaries for Clinton or Trump ought to be ashamed of themselves right about now.

And the precedent it sets is that the rule of law in the USA is irrelevant. You'll gladly cut your nose to spite your face just so your team can prolong its time in the limelight.

And the fact that you equate holding Clinton accountable for her actions with helping Trump proves how far gone your sense of right and wrong is. You don't care about fascism, you care about conservative fascism. When Clinton is president will you be concerned about her manipulation of the law and blatant disregard for accounting to the people she claims to serve?

Unfortunately we won't know until the investigation concludes... I find it hard to believe a guy like Comey would be pro - Trump. I think a more likely premise if you were to imagine his move as political is that Comey just gave a big middle finger to the DOJ/Clinton machine.

As to the timing? Unless Comey addresses the country we may never know.

Because he testified to Congress...to the people that the investigation was concluded and Hillary didn't do anything criminal. Imagine if he didn't say anything and then after we elect Hillary they uncover something in these new batch of e-mails. That's why he worded that letter so carefully he's trying to thread the needle here. Like I said where the FBI messed up was that somehow they missed these devices the first go around.

First of all let's not pretend there's any evidence of wrong doing here. Comey acknowledges that the emails could be nothing.

Second, there's a difference between status quo supporting neoconservatives like the last four presidents and what Trump is advocating.

Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush Jr, Obama and Hillary are not fascist when compared to Trump.

They don't praise autocrats like Putin. They don't urge their crowds to beat up peaceful protestors. They don't advocate torture that would make Dick Cheney blush. They don't have unprecedented support from white nationalist domestic and abroad. They don't suggest banning people from our country based on their religious beliefs. They don't say we should "take their oil" on national tv. They don't suggest changing laws to make it easier to sue the press. They don't say the first amendment offers "too much protection".

Maybe these are minor differences to you but not to anyone familiar with civil liberties enough to recognize neofascism or authoritarianism when they see it.

It's beyond me how some people are still acting as if this election is typical Democrat vs Republican partisan politics...

What we have here looks like it very well could be Comey putting his thumb on the scales here, which is unfortunate.

The fact that Clinton is demanding all the information out there shows that she isn't worried about whatever they have, but this is most likely just going to hang over things for the next 10 days.

That said, I think this will just be the final hurdle that Clinton has to overcome on her way to the Presidency. And ultimately will just further nullify Trump's "rigged" claims since he's kind of getting last licks here in terms of the narrative.

It's official now that the FBI doesn't have a search warrant and thus never knew the content of the email or if they are important so I'd say it's safe to say this was political.

The other angle in this which I've noticed hasn't been discussed much is whether el creepo (not the orange one) has been somehow cooperating with the Feds and has alluded to what may be on the labtop that would be of interest to Comey and co.

I imagine right about now all sorts of back room dealing has been taking place. El creepo will probably do just about anything to cut a deal with the FBI.

Or you know...if you read past the headline

The decision to send the letter “wasn’t easy,” said the senior law enforcement official. Comey and top FBI officials debated what course to take once they learned about the discovery on Weiner’s laptop – said to include thousands of Abedin’s emails. In the end, the official said, Comey feared that if he chose to move forward and seek access to the emails and didn’t immediately alert Congress, the FBI’s efforts would leak to the media and the director would be accused of concealing information.

“This was the least bad choice,” the senior official said.

Like I said he's trying to thread the needle here.
