The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I'll take the movie suit over your suggestions, thanks. Don't want Superman running around in red speedos over his suit. And the collar looks great. Much better than its comic counterpart. Actually, Jae Lee is one artist that made it work in comics, as well. But other than that...

The new suit, which I have stated many times, I hated upon first reveal. But after seeing it in a follow up images and in action, I've grown to love it. It genuinely might be in my Top 2 live action Superman suits.

I honestly do not really want to see it change much. Maybe reduce the number of lines on the suit, such as on the knees and around the cape line. I think tightening up the suit just a tad so it's a little more form fitting would help too.

But they must keep the trunks and the collar. The collar design works really well on the suit (never thought I'd say that) and the trunks as proven is classic. And if the movie makes as much money as they are anticipating, it will prove that the audience accepts the trunks for what they are.

I don't think updating the logo makes sense from a story standpoint. I mean why would Superman suddenly change his family crest which the public recognize? This is your established logo now for this franchise.

- Mister Terrific will have white eyes at some point during Superman
I think fans misinterpreted this because James sometimes has a weird way of wording his responses. The question was "Is it possible we could see other characters who have their white eyes?" to which he responded "Mr. Terrific doesn't have white eyes for the whole movie, no."

Most fans have interpreted this as, he will have white eyes at some point but not for the entire movie. What it sounds like James was trying to say is that he simply won't have white eyes at all, and will have regular eyes throughout the entire movie.

The hype is real.

I usually don't collect McFarlane figures, but I just had to get these:

I have TDK trilogy line from a few years back, and the new Batman Begins ones as well along with 1989 Batman. I'm really considering picking these up if I can. There's also the Batman Returns figures on the horizon!

I do look forward to Teen Titans. Would be refreshing to see something like that. If Gunn ever decided to do Shazam, I hope they cast Alan Ritchson. He is 42 but Levi was around that age when he was cast. Ritchson looks so much like the character. It would be a huge missed opportunity not to cast him. As much as I dislike seeing the same actor appear in multiple DC projects. He was Aquaman, Hank in Titans...anyway, I think he'd nail Shazam.

As for changing the suits...I feel like there can be some reasonable excuse to change the 'S' into something more Superman-like. Gunn can always go back to the Kingdom Come logo when he does make a Kingdom Come movie. And I also hope Guy Gardner gets a more authentic suit.

At the very least, I hope Gunn gets rid of the 52-neck collar on Superman's suit. And while I don't expect Gunn to make that many adjustments, in addition to the collar and 'S', I do wish the red trunks could be a little shorter and less 'in-your-face'. And those boots..please, just use the v-cuts. I don't think neither of the red boots outside of Cavill's suit and Reeve's boots looked good. The Superman suit is a classic, just try sticking to that. How difficult can it be? And the bagginess. It could look tighter. Already know that Gunn doesn't want fake muscle padding, but I mean the suit fit Reeve. Neither previous takes on the suit looked baggy before.

I like Ritchson a lot but I feel like if he lands a superhero role, I wouldn’t want to see him dye his hair black or wear a wig. They should cast him as a character where they can make use of the blond. If they ever recast Steve Rogers in the MCU, I think he would crush that. Especially if they make him more of a hardass like the comic version is at times (don’t get me wrong, Chris Evans’ Steve is my favorite version of the character but I wouldn’t want to see a new actor just doing the same thing he did).

Gunn doesn't see the DCU resting on Superman's shoulders.

Doesn't think he could've done this film in 2020.

Krypto was his way into the film

Talks about those pesky little glasses

Could you guys see Ritchson as Batman in the DCU. He seems to want the role and with his work with WB in the past I could see him on the short list. I just don’t see him as a Kevin Conroy type of Batman that I suspect Gunn would want. Age wise and size wise I think Ritchson would look great.

I bet the Batman candidates will have to do lines reads with David. Would love to be a fly on the wall for that.

Something about Ritchson as Batman doesn’t quite work for me either. He’s got the size obviously and his Reacher character feels a lot like Batman at times. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I just feel like it’s not the right fit.

I will bet money they want Superman and Batman to be of similar physiques. I doubt Ritchson gets more than a cursory name drop by clickbaiters.

Batman has to lead a franchise and co-lead a Justice League film and Ritchson doesn't strike me as the guy to put that on the shoulders of. If he is in the DCU he will be in a (no pun intended) smaller role.

James and DC Studios seem to be casting to personality type for the most part, with the exceptions of Nicholas Hoult as Lex and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord. So unless they make an exception for Batman I don't see Ritchson landing it. If any of the popular fancasts for Batman land it, I'd say either Brandon Sklenar or Oliver Jackson stand the best chance.

I like Oliver Jackson-Cohen a lot. I haven’t heard his name brought up in a while but I think he could crush it. He was excellent in the Haunting shows, Wilderness and The Invisible Man. I still want to see this movie he did called Jackdaw with my girl Jenna Coleman but there seems to be no way to see it in the US.

The DCU Batman casting will probably be the most controversial/arguments/anger casting of all the DCU heroes. Superman casting of David was universally excepted by everyone. The DCU Batman arguments on social media will be legendary. WB/DC/Gunn will take full advantage of it.

Agree to disagree

Always is, lol.

Especially since we already have another actor playing Batman who is generally well-liked.

It will be interesting to see what they do. WB typically gets a name actor for Batman. The closest casting we had to an “unknown” was Bale when he was cast, and he was still a well-known actor, just not a household name yet. I would prefer someone at that level again; someone with a proven track record but not someone that everyone knows. Affleck was the worst in recent years in terms of performance and just the overall reaction from the public. I know he won some people over but for me personally, his performance felt entirely surface level:

Batman: Be angry and aggressive

(real) Bruce Wayne: Also angry but with a normal voice

(Public persona) Bruce Wayne: Act drunk

Well I think that was a function of the people making the film...

Sure but remember that Affleck had a lot of input (he even brought in his own writer to rework the script). And at least some of the acting choices were his own. To be fair, he probably would have done better under a real director but I still don’t think he would have been as good as Bale, Pattinson and Keaton were. Not even close.

I rewatched the Accountant the other day. Man, Afflleck had the ability to be the best Batman. The writing screwed him up. Maybe teaming him up with Cavill was not a good idea either.

Pattinson was getting roasted on social media, sparkly bat, twilight boy, ect….. You know what is so good about Matt Reeves Batman? The more you see it the better it gets. Especially when you watch the Penguin series with it.

The DCU Batman and Reeves Batman can co exist. I don’t see an issue at all. I believe the DCU Batman will be in Clayface and that is why it has a new writer.

I suspect whomever they cast as Batman (or possibly cast), will not be any of the names suggested by fans.

I am totally expecting someone out of left field. It definitely will not be the guys who have been vocally campaigning for the part like Skelnar, Ritchson, Jensen.

Given Gunn's recent comments in Rolling Stone about Wonder Woman and Batman being his priority, it would not shock me if both roles have been cast.

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing any of his work, but just based on his vibe and what I've seen in interviews and clips but he has a natural darkness and gravitas required to play Batman. He reminds me a lot of Jake Gyllenhaal, who I think would also make a great Batman.

ONE THOUSAND percent!!! I think Bale was the only Batman/Bruce Wayne casting that most fans were on board with, which is ironic considering many fans think he's one of the worst Batmen now. 🙄 Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney, Affleck, Pattinson....all had their respective controversies and most of them turned out to be pretty damn awesome Batman. Even if one the most popular fancasts (Ackles, Ritchson, or Sklenar) lands the role there will still be lots of discourse.

Yeah he does have similar vibes to Jake but unlike Jake he doesn’t seem to be driving his career off a cliff doing trash like Road House and Ambulance lol. Granted, Jake is obviously a much bigger name but it’s getting to the point where I’m almost avoiding anything he’s in lol.

Prince of Persia is right there. :o
