The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Tracking is all over the place.

I still believe this movie will open in the $150M+ range. There's too much hype around it for it to not at least open big.

I think a lot of the estimates that are on the lower end is analysts being conservative because of the failures of the DCEU.

This is the only film this summer that's coming out that actually feels like an event.
I think this movie needs to get good reviews in order to do well and it has to be a movie that people want to see again.

I've never a good judge at box office but superman already has brand awareness, which is a hurdle new properties struggle with, its whether or not that converts into being a must see on the big screen.

Since the topic of SR has come up periodically, I feel a little bad that James Marsden got wasted in that movie and as Cyclops in three movies where it was clear that Singer and his writers had no interest in the character. To be fair, X-Men basically started his career, but the guy is so talented that I would love to see him pop up in a real CBM role at some point. I was just thinking how great he could have been as (the not evil but highly manipulative) Max Lord in the DCU. Nothing against Sean Gunn, I’m sure he’ll be fine, but I wish James had saved that role for someone else.

He's coming back as Cyclops.

I'm hopeful they'll do right by him.

General reactions to the first 30 minutes of 'Superman'

- Well-paced, vibrant, must-see in IMAX
- Flight scenes are fast, dynamic, unique
- Score is well-integrated
- Not much fighting, but there is a sequence
- Barely anything substantial plot-wise was shown in the trailers

Sounds perfect to me :)

I think in order for a DC universe to really work, you need to have Superman and Batman are equally important. They're at the top and they are the image of DC.

Problem with Warner Bros and the former DCEU was that they didn't prioritize Superman and neglected the character, and that's largely why their franchise failed. Wonder Woman, Shazam and Aquaman got proper sequels, but not even Superman? They prioritized on some other films like Suicide Squad sequel, Harley Quinn but not Superman, and Batman was absent.

For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man, Captain America and Spider-Man are arguably the most important characters for their universe. They are the faces of the Marvel.

As for Batman, well, he is needed, yes, but he's been rebooted too many times, and the problem is, how do you make yet another reboot?

The DCEU should have had a solo Batman movie before they made Batman v Superman, except I don't think people would have been ready for a reboot with The Dark Knight Rises and Christian Bale still fresh in people's minds. Nolan's Batman was by then, the 3rd reboot after the first modern Batman movie (1989). You had Kilmer, Clooney and then Bale.

Don’t get me wrong the heads of DC movies during the DCEU era were terrible but I get the feeling that Henry Cavill was not an easy person to work with. It was so weird that they sidelined him in BVS and then put him in a refrigerator for Justice League. It was telling that Ben, Momoa, and Gale were the stars of the DCEU while Cavill was in the Ezra category. Was Superman the issue for WB or was it the actor…….

I think after superman, a solo DCU Batman film should be fast tracked.
That said, I'd do screen tests with all the actors up for Batman with David, for the inevitable WF film.
They gotta have chemistry or it will be for nothing.

As for Batman being DC's most valuable asset, well I have to disagree. That might've been the case during the DK trilogy reign but those days are long over and while The Batman was a solid hit it didn't do as much as Wonderwoman or anywhere near Aquaman. In fact even MOS made more when you adjust for 9 yr inflation (although adjusting for inflation has it's own shortcomings).
It's possible that The Batman didn't resonate as much with the general audience as it did comic book fans. We'll have to see how the follow-up does.

More than $700M at the BO tell me that it did resonate. Most who have seen it that I know have liked it (minus a couple thinking it was a bit overlong), most of those who haven't seen it yet haven't done so because of BVS , thinking that the character have jumped the shark and therefore "staying loyal" to the Bale Trilogy.

The Batman is so good especially paired with the Penguin series. Second best Batman movie to the Dark Knight in my opinion. WB missed a big opportunity by not coming out with the sequel in October of 2025 though after the summer of Superman.

The good thing about The Penguin series is that it got many people retroactively interested in the movie. The Batman is as good as The Dark Knight for me.

Like the costume, that poster is so close to perfection but doesn't quite stick the landing for me.

The clouds / background is beautiful, why is he awkwardly standing in front of it by stepping onto the S.

Choose a pose which works with the background better. Imagine this pose or similar, with the posters' gorgeous background.
