It's not like you're his roomate or something, so does it matter? Nope. And movies don't write and direct themselves.
You know, at one point, I did feel a little iffy about him as a person. But, having watched a bunch of the recent interviews, press and fun marketing on YouTube for the Superman film, as well as listening to a few podcasts, I really do get the sense that he has changed quite a bit as a person throughout the past decade.
He mentioned in the DC Showcase podcast and in the Josh Horowitz interview how at one point he used to think he had to be super edgy to get people to like him and pay attention to him, which is why a lot of of his earlier filmography was the way it was, and that him getting fired from Marvel Studios was a real eye-opener for him and caused him to do a lot of soul-searching. A lot of the cast of GOTG were the ones that supported him during that time and made him realize that there were genuinely people that cared about him and that he felt loved for the first time. I think he really took that to heart and it really does show in a lot of his later and more recent films/series, especially from Superman, which I haven’t seen yet but, going off of what people said, is also the case. (And, if that sounds like a certain talking raccoon in the MCU, there’s a reason why he’s James Gunn favorite character.)
He mentioned in the past how he didn’t want to do Superman originally, and I think that’s because the James Gunn at that point in time wasn’t the right fit for this film, but the James Gunn as of late was. The guy who directed Slither, Super and the first GOTG could not have directed and written this version of Superman. Is there still some aspects of his brand of humor and personality that still I still find a bit much for me at times? Sure. But I really think he has made an effort to work on himself and improve for the better, and working on Superman really helped play a part in that.
I always give props to people who recognize certain issues or faults about themselves and make an effort to change, which is more than I can say for a certain president in office right now who refuses to admit fault and just keeps doubling down.
Also, in regards to all of the past comments about how he spends too much time online answering and responding to questions, he also said in the same DC Showcase interview that nowadays a lot of those answers and responses to questions on Twitter/BlueSky are vetted and answered through another person that works for him because he’s so focused nowadays on being a co-CEO for DC Studios developing/writing/directing a bunch of projects. So, if you see one him online interacting with other users, its usually someone posting on his behalf.
Really hoping this Super family movie Gunn is working on is a Superman Supergirl team up with Brainiac and Lobo in it
So, basically kind of an adaptation of this:
