I'm almost certain Nolan had studio inteference on Begins, because, even to the fan who loved Begins, i'm sure they must agree that TDK is a vastly superior film on every level. The script, story, acting, characterisation, action is just so much more sophisticated and greater that i can't believe it.

I was so excited about begins, and even when i watch it now i'm tinged with disappointment at how it should have been so much better. As it was i thought it generic, bland and mostly 'dumb'. But my god Nolan and co have done quite a job with TDK. I've seen it 3 times now and ech time i'm captivated from start to finish. And the score seems to be so perfect this time around. The tension and pace of the film, also brilliant.

There really isn't much left to say..The Dark Knight indicates why Batman has been, and will be, as succesful a film franchise as it is a comicbook; because it can reach a nadir with Batman & Robin, and shoot right up again with Batman Begins and scale it's original heights of quality and popularity with TDK.

Ok. I've finally picked up the nerve to try and articulate how I feel about this beast in all its aspects and entirety. My review:

It paid off, didn't it? I've been here since '06, joining for the Spidey 3 hype. I need say no more on that matter, but obviously after my first hype experience taking such an unexpected turn (for me at least), let's just say that I was worried about getting dragged along by the hype again for another summer blockbuster. I needn't have worried. This film was incredible. I liked Begins, but I didn't rave about it like some - until I watched TDK - mouth agape the whole time - Batman '89 was my live action batfilm of choice. Sorry Tim, it isn't any more.

Let's get down to specifics :)

Bale/Bruce/Bats

What a great performance - as always (do we expect anything less from this guy?). As Bruce, Bale seems much more comfortable in the role this time. All aspects of the character seemed stronger and yet more subtle. The playboy side was funnier than in Begins, while not being too over the top to gain cheap chuckles. They have a great grasp on making him seem arrogant. The more serious scenes of Bruce subtly brilliant, showing his pain and torture naturally in the scene.

Bats. I liked Bats in this film. He was so damn ballsy - almost an element of recklessness in him. I'll admit, the first time I watched it, I got dragged out of the film a couple of times. Not by an usher, but by Bats' voice :csad: There, I said it. BU-ut, I watched it for the ninth time last night and now am very used to it. I think it just surprised me is all. Bale seemed to go a bit heavier on the gruff this time. Kinda suits the ballsy side I mentioned before. So there's a plus from a downside  Pretty much the only downside you'll see in this review.

Ledger/Joker

Don't believe the hype . . . it underestimated this spectacular performance. With a character like The Joker, you can't have a definitive version. There are too many versions; too many sides that are shown in different ways. The Joker is a piece of art, intended to be interpreted as you please. There is no right or wrong way to like this character.

Heath raised the bar here, he really did. He made Joker into a living, breathing monster, where you could only glimpse the man underneath. Every line had a tune, a quirk, a defining moment. Every movement had a tic, a twitch, and a voice of its own. He was funnier than I expected him to be. Much funnier. Remember the first trailer (not teaser) where most of the lines were pretty intense and quite aggressive? I didn't see it coming that I would be lolling at everything he said and did. And although he was funny, he was also dark and disturbing - even IN the humour. It's funny, but I was partway through reading American Psycho when I went to see TDK for the first time, and they both have a similar humour (as far as Joker goes, anyway). You're laughing at things you really shouldn't be laughing about. :funny:

Sheer brilliance. Every time I have watched it, I just can't take my eyes off him. He is captivating. He truly was an unstoppable force. Heath unfortunately didn't have chance to make a lot of films and have a long happy life and career, but he has done himself proud with this role - he broke boundaries and stereotypes . And I for one prefer quality over quantity.

Thanks Heath

Eckhart/Dent/Faces

I'll get straight to the point now, I liked Dent much more than I liked Faces. It's not a bad thing, it's just that Dent was utterly brilliant as a stand alone character, without even needing to become Two Face. Two face wasn't so much a character in this film as he was a consequence of TDK's mechanics. Dent was a full character; Faces was the death of him - and that was before the ACTUAL death. I really don't think that two face was built to endure in this franchise. He wasn't the beginning of a character, it was a very sad ending of one.

Eckhart was so likeable in the role, from the first line - 'Sorry I'm late, folks' - you could enjoy his relaxed manner. I thought his chemistry with Maggie was better than Bale's, but they had more screen time together so meh.

Others

Oldman/Gordon was my second favourite performance in the film, only beaten by The Man Who Laughs. So understated - the way he delivers that line about how he'd be working alone if he didn't work along side corrupt cops to Dent made me feel for him and also makes you realise how much of a strong heroic man he is, sticking to his morals when so many around him are as corrupt as the criminals they are after. Brilliant.

Gyhillywiggle/Dawes was alright too, I guess. Anything's better than that plank of wood from Begins. It's not so much the actress. I'm just not very keen on the character. It doesn't spoil the film for me - she was expected. I'm just glad she's dead.

Cain/Alfred. He did exactly what we expected him to. Good delivery of lines, and used the word 'bloody' a lot. He's my favourite Alfred. He has brilliant chemistry with Bale. Top notch as expected.

Freeman/Fox. There was a bit more for him in this one, and he didn't disappoint. For a character that doesn't have a very high percentage of overall screen time, freeman makes Fox very well rounded and real. Plenty of depth and very likeable.

fantastic performances all round.

Lets not forget . . .

Nolan

He's outdone himself this time. He has made something epic. He hasn't tried to make it grand by weaving lots of different stories together; he did it by telling one story, a big story, from lots of different perspectives. Certain scenes are going to become iconic. Even little shots - like Joker with his head out of the car. The pacing is also a massive improvement from what we had in Begins. It moves along so quickly that you finish watching and look at your watch, sure the people who told you it was a 2.5hr film were bullsh**ing you.

Nolan did something special here - not just for Batman, but for comic book films in general. He has opened gates that we didn't even know were there, and he has done it with style.

Thank you Mr Nolan. You have given me the batfilm I always wanted.

-------

There are many other things I could gush about, but I don't want to break the internets. From the smallest thing, to the biggest icons, this film doesn't falter. In all, a masterpiece. A film that will endure. A film that has broke boundaries. The Dark Knight has no limits.

Wooo.

Saw it tonight, did not walk away saying 'best film of all time' as expected.

But it was marvelous.

Heath was just breathtaking, ahh what a shame the man has left us, an oscar nod or win is due.

Bale was great as Bruce and Batman but the roaring was a tad but over the top, but I got used to it.

Maggie I did not like at all.

Aaron as harvey two face, overshadowed by Heath but a thrilling performance.

And the rest of the cast gave their A-Game.

Best movie of 08, and the second best superhero movie of all time.

did anybody else notice Pat Hingle's (the original Commissioner Gordon) cameo in the march?

egg
This is expertly summed up. Great review!

I agree completely with Eggy!
This film was just....the perfect way to interpret a character as interesting as Batman.

One of the best films i've ever seen, in my top 10 for sure!

thanks egg... good stuff...

if Nolan does do a third movie... and having him say that he doesn't do a sequel unless it can be better than what came before... well i gotta say... i look forward to hear it become official..

i mean.. i was eager to see DK.. but i didn't expect it to really be done that well... my expectations grew, of coarse, in the last six months with pics and info... but to be honest.... way back when it began... including the announcement of Heath's casting.. i did not expect to see the movie we were given. i mean.. they finally did a dark Batman movie that had a feeling like the killing joke... it just took 20 years... that was a long wait... but so worth it..

to think it can get even better?... can't wait..

thanks to Warner Bros. for letting Nolan and his gang to do their thing... and thanks to Nolan... absolutely brilliant...

Seen the movie four times so far and never noticed him.

If I see it again(which I most likely will), when should I look out for him?

That's cool that Nolan had him in there. As well as the old asian guy in jail with Bruce in BB, he was the asian crime boss from Batman '89. The one in the scene where Nicholson's Joker uses the hand buzzer.

yo Eggyman great review, i'm trying to put mine into words but it takes alot of thinking!! hehe

My Mom's review ;)

I was at work and got a phone call...my parents live far away from me so when I get a call its usually an emergency...I checked the voicemail immediately...

"How am I supposed to leave a brief message about one of the most amazing movies I've ever seen...call me back and we'll talk about it, love you. Bye."

Called up as soon as I could and said "Let me guess, you finally went and saw Batman?" and she then thanked me for dragging her to the older movies when I was a kid and for making her a Batman fan...we went to Batman Returns and Batman Forever on opening nights with my family. My Dad is a man of few words but I asked if he liked it and he said "Oh yeah...it was great"! My mom is a tough critic but in her older age she seems to have warmed up to some of the comic book movies I always call and tell her to check out, but this is one she called me for immediately after seeing!

Well, just about three weeks since my first viewing (of four) and I just wanted to randomly pipe in with something.

This movie is still amazing. Nothing will match the satisfaction of the FIRST time seeing it, but each of the other three times I saw it I was very very satisfied with the movie and it hasn't lost any of its appeal with me. I just watched some clips again and figure I'll be good for a 5th viewing some time within the next 10 days. Usually when a movie is well into it's DVD run and I see it for a 4th time I'm content with leaving it alone for months, even years. Not the case here. :)

two categorys. as a comicbook movie and as a normal movie.
two ratings.

as a comicbook movie i give this movie a 8/10.
i didnt like some things to give it a 10/10 for a comicbook movie.
-alternate takes. tons of good joker footage that could be remembered in 10 years.
the one when he is firing the bazooka, standing on the empty street with hes weapon with an evil pose, licking hes lips,.....
- batpod in the tumbler. i didnt like the idea 6 months ago. so i will not now say that its briliant. lets say before the movie i hated the idea 100% because i thought that it comes in the middle out. the actual transformation was badass. it looked good. but from the side? and the tires are nto the same. i hate the idea 60%. still the batpod is amazing. and the action was holly s....
-joker doesnt have a permawhite skin. remember this is a complain because this is a comicbook movie. i understand jokers character in the movie. but having some skin problems wouldnt hurt.
-not enough money shots fro mepic scale. remember guys this is a 180 milion movie. i could care less if its so expensive because he is filming in chicago. thang god it is making money but what if. more batman shots flying down the buildings, more big epic shots of gotham city. to ''simple'' shots from nolan. like singer.

because of those problems it gets a 8/10.

if you watch this as a normal action movie with a crime story it gets simply a 10/10. the story is complex and very inteligent. everyone is acting 100%. the fight scenes are better and the scope is BIG. bale is badass and acts obviosly good. heath ledger as the joker is amazing. he is so amazing that its the only reason i am angry that he is dead. two face was a big suprise. here i will admit that i was wrong. i said on this forum that there is no way that two face will look like this. plus the CGI for two face was groundbreaking(one of the reason the budget is 180 milions).

everything was already said in this thread. one of the big surpises from joker were the scar stories. and yes he was a sadist in this movie.

bryan singer: in your face that people would not be able to watc dangeruous action. this movie is braking records and its dark and scary. your lex was pathetic compared to villains from BB and TDK.
in what kind of world are we living that batman (180milions) is making more money then a family friendly superman ( 200 milions). the universe is goind down.

the tires of the batpod are the front two tires, so they are the same. it sorta folds out from the front.
what so you didnt think it made use of its 180 mill budget? think of how expensive it is to basically hire out lower wacker and explode actual buildings in a major city like chicago. plus the hong kong sequence must of cost a bomb, thens theres flipping a semi vertically in the air.

you can actually see him about 2-3 times during the funeral procession. camera cuts to a close up of all the officers walking by and its pretty much centered on him for about 4-5 seconds, and then they cut to him again another time.

:brucebat::hoboj: I can't give this movie enough praise. I cannot stop thinking about it. I watch the making of HBO special, which I recorded on my DVR, like every day.

These new Bat-films are a perfect amalgam of the best from the Comics and Graphic novels. They've taken great moments and character features and put them together to make the best Batman movies ever.

This movie is beyond four stars it's a ten.

I'm a comic book purest and even I can look over things like Harvey not having the acid thrown in his face or Joker being thorwn into a vat of acid.
Harvey's scarring reminded me of The animated series which there was an explosion a bit different but still, I was able to over look that 'cause it was so well done and here aswell, and Joker's still scarred, and the best thing they did was to have him give different accounts of how he got those scars.

The mystery of the Joker's one of the main thing's about him and they got it perfectly nailed down. They knew what they were talking about, they knew what they were doing.
And Sal's man trying to kill Dent in the courtroom is a bit of a nod to the acid scarring.

And you get to see more of Batman doing Detective work and his relationship with Gordon. One of the best lines is Batman asking for time with the crime scene before the cops contaminate it.

And Gary as Gordon is perfect, I love Jim, and it was great on opening night when Jim popped up again and said, We got you son of a B...., everyone cheered.

Thankyou to everyone on this great movie for bring my favorite Superhero to life the right way finally.

That goes for Batman Begins too.

I was afraid about what Nolan was doing with realism when I first heard about BB and all, but then I saw that he just meant a much better story for Batman, a serious one, not like something dumb like Riddler sucking brainwaves and some crap about satellites and sun light to thaw the city.

These movies are incredible and I am in awe every time I watch them.
Now if they can just revamp Superman and do it aswell as Batman and make a GreenLantern movie, and WB/DC sounds like they wanna' go in the direction of Marvel studios now and get more of their chracters on screen and in a good and faithful way.

So, I Finally saw TDK.
A film which two years ago, I was frothing at the mouth for.

When the release finally came- 25/7 over here in UK, the f**ker was sold out in Imax every day. So we booked some tix for today, got the day off work, and I just got back from the noon screening.

Awesome film, but it did not blow me away like BB did.
I did not go in carrying any of the hype, just my own personal expectations.

The film seemed to be an action/superhero/thriller hybrid and I think this fusion sat really well, the plot was quite dense and I need repeat viewings for it to sink in properly. Overall, the film did not blow me away which is what I wanted and was expecting. There was no X factor for me like there was for Begins. There were some great scenes, most of the Joker stuff, but none that I thought were amazing, such as the docks fight with the thugs in the first film or the fear gas illusions.

Ledger's performance was awesome and he totally got the character, but the rest of the film was not quite up to that level.

I need to watch the film more but overall I’m going to rate it at 8.5/10 right now. Here’s some of my other posts about the film..

Make-up Joker
I was one of the guys against the make-up, but in the film Ledger was so good that it did not matter to me. There was the issue of consistency regarding the paint however.

During the interrogation scene, in one shot Joker has a smeared patchy face, then it cuts to being fully whited up, and then back again. You could clearly see where they had cut and resumed filming.

So re: the issues of consistency and accuracy to the source, I would have preferred the bleached skin, but Ledger’s Joker was so good that it did not effect my enjoyment of the performance.

Fight Scenes
I thought the fight scenes were pretty good in this film. Just like how in Begins I thought the unsteady camera worked well to convey the unpredictability and chaos of combat.

There was nothing as amazing as the docks scene in Begins, but the first fight in the car park with Scarecrow was nice, you could clearly witness Bats' Kensei fighting style at that point. The nightclub scene and some of the fisticuffs with Joker were nice too. Not perfect, but a hell of a lot better than Micheal Keaton pretending to fight.

I loved TDK, but it did not knock my socks off like BB did, so I rate it below Begins. Joker was right on the money tho, he made the film. Apart from the overall lack of being amazed, here are some of my disappointments-

-early death for Batmobile
-that it was not referred to as Batmobile
-No Fear gas in Scarecrow scene
-The Begins suit not lasting past Bats first 2-3 scenes
-No Batcave!
-You could tell Two Face was CGI, make up would have worked better
-....and that Battersea Power station was indistinguishable as well, Battersea Power station.
Such a great idea for a location shoot, but we did not even get an establishing shot to show this.
