The Dark Knight The Dark Knight: tomatometer predictions, ratings and discussion

It would be wonderful if the movie stayed at 100%, but that's not going to happen. I predict a rating in the low 90's.

From the official critics review thread in spoilers:

"I can’t rate “The Dark Knight” as an outstanding piece of craftsmanship. “Batman Begins” was grim and methodical, and this movie is grim and jammed together. The narrative isn’t shaped coherently to bring out contrasts and build toward a satisfying climax. “The Dark Knight” is constant climax; it’s always in a frenzy, and it goes on forever."

David Denby. THe most NEGATIVE so far.

Tear this guy apart. He has horrible taste. He rates Hancock but not
Dark Knight and Iron man
It just showed up on RT as rotten and now TDK is down to 94%.

Lame! :funny:

So I was happy last night. Went to bed and 100%.

Woke up and wtf, 88%? I mean that's better than begins but hopefully 50 more reviews will push it higher. :(

Well, you glance over the negative reviews, and they seemed annoyed and shocked that a comic book movie is trying to be serious, like it's illegal or something.

A lot complain about length too. What, got somewhere else to be? Isn't this your job? All in all, 3 reviews rotten out of 24 is still pretty good. Plus, just check out what they gave other movies. These guys are bipolar.

If everyone liked a dark, haunting, disturbing film like this, then there would probably be something wrong with the world. Think about it, everyone has different tastes. Some people want to dislike this movie because its about a comic book character. Other people are going to want to dislike it because it's sadistic and very dark at times.

But me and others are glad Nolan didn't cheese it up and make less of a movie than the characters and story demanded. It seems like he really made the intense film he wanted to make. And I'm sure that is what sticks in people's minds as they leave the theater. If he let up at all, this film wouldn't have the same impact.

So people are going to want to dislike this movie. That is perfectly ok with me, as long as Nolan made the film I wanted. And all signs point to him succeeding brilliantly.

Agreed. Two out of three of the critics who didn't like it aren't even professional critics, just blog critics. So really, does their opinion hold much of a candle to the likes of Peter Travers, Roger Ebert, and other well known, professional critics? The professional ones are the ones who can distinguish their personal taste from unbiased critical anlysis. Also, like you pointed out, not everyone like dark, serious films. A lot of movie goers want mindless fluff. It's why Eddie Murphy films get made. :csad:

The Eddie Murphy film point is very accurate. I think that sums it up for me. I just think it's so rare that films like "the Dark Knight" get made when it could have just as easily been another dumbed down action flick.

I really think most of us will look back at this film and think about how truly unique it was. These serious, mature, thought provoking films don't come along often. And it makes it all the more sweeter that it's coming to fruition with intriguing characters like Batman and the Joker.

What I think will make the film so unique is not only how unconvential and masterfully done it is, but the fact that it explores the symbiotic nature of the relationship Batman and Joker, and what their relationship represents about the nature of the relationship between order and chaos is.

Oh, and Conebone, do the reivews put your fear about it not being as dark and serious as BB to rest? I still remember you talking about that a month or so ago. :oldrazz:

Batman Begins ended on RT with an 84% and a 7.7/10 rating.

I predict TDK will end with an 88% and a 8/10 rating.

considering the reviews, anything less than iron man's tomatometer would be disapointing

So what would you rather see, a higher tomato meter or a higher box office intake than Iron Man? I think I'd rather see the latter (if I had to pick just one). Socially, right now this movie is destroying Iron Man.

There's a couple of things you have to keep in mind though. Iron Man was light-hearted, summer fare. Most critics enjoyed it for what it was, a really good comic book movie like Spider-Man 2, etc.

However, TDK is a different kind of movie. It transcends its genre, Nolan is aiming for a crime epic set within the confines the of Batman universe. Some critics will appreciate this unique angle, the 'epicness', if you will, and the innovative direction Nolan is going with. There is NOTHING standard about this film, and Nolan is not following the traditional superhero movie standard, which you basically have with Iron Man. Because of that, some critics are bound to be negative, in fact this ones thus far, have complained about the length, that it takes itself too seriously, it's too dark and violent, where are the light hearted Batman movies, etc.

So you'll probably get 85% of critics calling TDK 'stunning, a near-masterpiece, epic film, etc.' While the other 15%--just won't get it--why a comic book film is trying to be serious material. They'll be wishing that the Batsuit still had nipples.

While with Iron Man you had 94% of critics agreeing that Iron Man was an 'excellent comic book movie, a popcorny blast, etc.' but it does nothing when it comes to innovation, or breaking new grounds.

^Well said, and totally agreed. From what I can tell, TDK is not playing it safe and is taking some real risks. And because it is aiming so much higher, it has a higher chance of critics knocking it down, IMO.

That would only fair if the reviewers on RT are always and consistently the same reviewers every time. Since they vary from movie to movie, we can't always accurately and fairly gage one movie to another. So...RT is purely for discussion and for a very very basic guideline for a general movie quality among watchers, but it can't be taken too seriously.

For example, Toy Story 2 has a 100% on RT. But that doesn't mean that I liked it more than a movie like Iron Man with a 93%.
